Philip Seymour Hoffman

'Deadly Heroin' In Play

In Death Investigation

2/3/2014 6:20 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Philip Seymour Hoffman's death appears to be heroin-related ... and law enforcement is looking at a deadly strain of the drug as one of the operating theories ... TMZ has learned.

Law enforcement sources tell us ... they do NOT know specifics about the heroin found in the NYC apartment where Seymour died.  There were 10 bags found -- 8 of them empty.

Authorities have been tracking a strain of heroin that has killed dozens of people on the East Coast -- just last month.  The heroin is laced with fentanyl, an extremely potent drug prescribed for terminal cancer patients.  The strain is 100 times more powerful than morphine ... it sometimes shuts down the respiratory system.

The drug -- sometimes called "Theraflu," "Bud Ice" and "24K" -- has been linked to 5 deaths on Long Island, 22 deaths in Pennsylvania and 19 on Rhode Island -- all in January.

Cops do NOT know if this strain caused Hoffman's death, but they tell us "everything's in play" until they get results from toxicology.

How can it be "100 times more powerful?" That would make one shot like taking 100 shots. The guy is dead, why embellish? It's already scary. Any heroin that killed him is "deadly heroin."

Mumra the Ever Living

My God TMZ, this is going to be another Paul Walker, isn't it. Leave the man alone, he was a talented, tortured soul who died with a needle in his arm. For once, have a shred of decency and just leave it - the man's dead, there are no more stories.
You're like vultures picking on bones.

One other thing. How about some kind of acknowledgement that you were totally off base with that whole Lindsay Lohan fur coat story.
Admit you were played like a fiddle by the Lohan family. Stop taking what they say as the truth. You may be making money off of it, but at what cost?

my 2 cents

He made a decision to get a hold of his dealer. He made a decision to stick a needle in his arm. He chose heroin over everything else in his life.

What a sad waste of an incredibly talented actor but they know the stuff is out there. Most of the junkies are out looking for the good Fentanyl laced stuff that he was using because they want the bigger and better high. I guess he's just a statistic now. RIP. I hope he got to enjoy it for a second before his cardiorespiratory system stopped working.

ALL Heroine is deadly. The biggest issue is when people are doing massive amounts of it, then go to rehab, they come out clean and then relapse. They think they can do the same amount they were doing BEFORE they went to rehab and they can't handle it and they die. It's taken the lives of many rehabbed celebs and regular folks too. The bottom line is, don't do drugs. It's always so sad to see someone with so much talent destroy themselves because their demons are just too big. RIP PSH

It was already established the baggies were marked Ace of Spades. At this point, it doesn't matter which type of heroin he took, he is dead. End of story.

I hope Heroin users think twice before using now.

Sad this had to happen to him or any of the others who took the tainted stuff.

Feel for the families of drug abusers , they are the innocent victims to these drugs that have a grip on their loved ones.

Hope his dealer feels so guilty.

Sick people who deal out drugs for financial gain, not really caring about lives of others they sell to.

So sad. His poor kids.
And TMZ, "ON Rhode Island"?? Um, it's a state. You didn't say "on Pennsylvania".

You have everything in the world and you stick it up your arm and die. Why would you do that?
