Action sports star Erik Roner -- one of the stars of MTV's "Nitro Circus" -- died in a freak skydiving accident in Lake Tahoe, California ... this according to the resort where it happened.
A spokesperson for Squaw Valley Ski Resort confirms Roner was performing a jump with a group of skydivers as part of the opening act for a golf tournament Monday ... when something went wrong.
The spokesperson says Roner hit a tree on the way down -- and died from injuries suffered in the accident.
Roner is a legend in the action sports community -- he's worked with Red Bull and was often featured on Travis Pastrana's "Nitro Circus" show.
He was 38. He's survived by his wife and 2 kids.
