After staff at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center accidentally gave Dennis Quaid's newborn twins and several other patients an overdose of the blood thinner heparin, the hospital's Chief Medical Officer, Michael L. Langberg, MD, apologized and issued a statement this evening.

According to Dr. Langberg, the error was "preventable" and involved "a failure to follow our standard policies and procedures." He said "there is no excuse for that to occur at Cedars-Sinai."

As for the twins, the statement did not identify them by name, but did say after giving "two patients" protamine sulfate, they "indicated no adverse effects from the higher concentration of heparin or from the temporary abnormal clotting function. Doctors continue to monitor the patients."

Dennis Quaid's rep issued the following statement to TMZ: Dennis and Kimberly appreciate everyone's thoughts and prayers and hope they can maintain their privacy during this difficult time.

TMZ has learned that Dennis Quaid's newborn twins are fighting for their lives after being inadvertently overdosed at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Sources tell us the twins -- Thomas Boone and Zoe Grace -- were accidentally given a massive dose of Heparin, an anti-coagulant. Babies typically get 10 units. Our sources say they were each mistakenly given 10,000 units. The drug is used to flush out IV lines and prevent blood clots. We're told one dose was given on Sunday morning, another on Sunday evening.

We're told late Sunday night, both babies started to "bleed out." Both babies are now at Cedars in the neo-natal intensive care unit where we're told they are stable.

The twins were born to Quaid and wife Kimberly Buffington November 8 via surrogate.

A rep for Quaid did not immediately return our call for comment and there was no immediate comment from Cedars.

We're told a technician stored the Heparin in the wrong place, and when a nurse grabbed the medicine for the babies without looking -- it was the wrong dosage.

A source says the babies are now being given Protamine, which reverses the effects of Heparin.

UPDATE: We're told as many as thirteen patients at Cedars were mistakenly given the overdose of Heparin, but the effects are more critical because of the age and weight of the twins.

Mary-Kate Olsen has been hospitalized with a kidney infection.

PEOPLE is reporting the 21-year-old pint-sized actress went to a New York ER and was admitted to a hospital on Monday. Her rep told the mag, "Mary Kate got a kidney infection. She's resting comfortably and will be released in the next day or so."

TMZ TV interviewed Julie Coleman, who says her body is "marred for life," after she appeared as a patient on Dr. Jan's Discovery Health show "Plastic Surgery: Before and After."

Coleman gave TMZ photos of her body right after the operation.

Adams arrived at an LA County Courthouse in San Pedro, Calif. today to answer questions about his assets, in relation to a malpractice judgment against him. Lori Ufondu was awarded more $100,000 after Dr. Adams left a sponge in her for six years after performing plastic surgery.

The woman's intense surgery was chronicled on Adams' Discovery Channel show, "Plastic Surgery: Before and After" -- with the horrifying results she says conveniently edited out.

We want to know why they put doctors on talking about plastic surgery who are not board certified in the field. In particular, we wanted to know why Oprah, NBC and Discovery Health showcased Dr. Jan Adams, who operated on Kanye West's mom the day before she died. The Dr. has 3 DUI's, multiple malpractice cases, and on and on. The director of the Medical Board of California is now going after his license.

We also wanted to know why E! is using doctors who are not board certified for "Dr. 90210" -- in particular, Dr. Robert Rey and Dr. David Matlock.

We've been asking for a comment for three days now -- Oprah, E!, NBC, Discovery Health are not returning calls.

TMZ caught up with "The Girls Next Door" at a book signing, where Kendra raved about the cutting board -- until she was asked about the recent tragedy involving Kanye's mom. For once, a TMZ photog wasn't the only one backpedaling.

If the tarnished record of Dr. Jan Adams is any indication, someone who is a doctor on TV is not automatically the person you should choose.
