Russell Brand's Heartfelt Blog About Amy Winehouse

Russell Brand, who famously battled addiction for years, wrote a long and touching blog about his friend Amy Winehouse -- whom he called both a genius and a junkie.

Russell says he finally conquered his addiction at the age of 27, the same age Amy was when she passed away. He says he'd known Amy for a long time before he had ever heard her sing ... calling her voice "entirely human yet laced with the divine."

Amy Winehouse -- Signs of Life When Help Arrived

Sources connected with the Amy Winehouse death investigation tell TMZ ... paramedics found "signs of life" when they arrived Saturday afternoon, but she died before they could transport her.

Our sources were not specific as to the exact nature of the "signs of life."

According to our sources, law enforcement "is operating under the suspicion" this an overdose, although police will not say on the record it's an overdose until the first postmortem exam Sunday morning.

As TMZ first reported, police on the scene determined there were no signs of foul play and there is nothing suspicious about the death.

Amy Winehouse's Dad -- Spotted at JFK

Amy Winehouse's dad, Mitch Winehouse, was spotted at JFK this afternoon ... just hours after his daughter's death.

Mitch was reportedly in the first class lounge, pacing up and down as he talked on his cell phone.

He was scheduled to perform at the Blue Note in New York City, but canceled the performance.

Police -- Don't Call Amy's Death an Overdose Yet

Police in London released their first official statement that acknowledges the death of Amy Winehouse -- but warned that's too soon to say she overdosed on drugs.

In a statement, London Police Superintendent Raj Kohli said, "Next of kin have been informed, and I can confirm that officers are now satisfied that the deceased is Amy Winehouse."

As for the cause of death, and speculation that Amy -- who had battled drug and alcohol problems for years -- may have OD'ed, Kohli said, "I am aware of reports suggesting this death is the result of a suspected drugs overdose, but I would like to re-emphasize that no post-mortem examination has yet taken place and it would be inappropriate to speculate on the cause of death."

Amy Winehouse -- Body Removed from Home

Paramedics were seen carrying out the body of Amy Winehouse after she was discovered dead in her London home this afternoon.

We're told police have remained outside the apartment and will continue to do so until it is no longer necessary. Police say there is a crowd of around 200 people gathered at the home.

Amy Winehouse's on-again/off-again boyfriend Reg Traviss was spotted among the despondent fans outside Amy's apartment in London.

Amy's Hangout -- We Hadn't Seen Her in a Month!

The Jazz Cafe in Camden Town was one of Amy Winehouse's favorite places to hang out -- but one of the employees there says they hadn't seen her in a month ... and they were beginning to worry about her.

According to the employee, Amy would come in a couple of times a week. The staff there had seen Amy at her lowest, but says that recently she had looked healthy -- and not the emaciated version of Amy we had sometimes come to known.

Amy was known to come in with an entourage of people, but we're told recently she was only coming in with one other person. Then, according to the employee, she stopped coming about a month ago and she hadn't been in since.

Amy was found dead in her apartment this morning. She was 27.

Amy Winehouse was found dead in her apartment in London today ... TMZ has confirmed.

A press release from the Metropolitan Police, which doesn't specifically name Winehouse, says:

"Police were called by London Ambulance Service to an address in Camden Square NW1 shortly before 16.05hrs today, Saturday 23 July, following reports of a woman found deceased.

On arrival officers found the body of a 27-year-old female who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Enquiries continue into the circumstances of the death. At this early stage it is being treated as unexplained. "Winehouse famously battled addiction to drugs and alcohol and was in and out of rehab several times throughout the years.

Last month, Winehouse canceled her European tour after a performance in Serbia where she seemed completely out of it.

She was 27.
