'Pants on the Ground' Guy:

Show Me the Money!

1/21/2010 8:30 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

0120_larry_platt_getty_ex-1"General" Larry Platt -- the musical mastermind behind "Pants on the Ground" -- hasn't seen a dime since everyone and their mother started singing his tune ... and now he's lawyering up in the hopes of finally raking in some cash.

Platt tells TMZ he loves the countless parodies and remixes of his tune -- but says since he's the one who wrote the greatest song ever created about pants being on the ground ... he's the one who should be getting paid.

Problem is Platt never copyrighted the song ... so he's looking to hire an attorney to help him snag a slice of the "Pants" craze while he can.

For the record, Platt has seen Brett Favre's renditionand liked it ... and if Brett's up for it, Platt would love to get Brett on board for a duet.

RE:13. PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT THE SINGER OF THE" PANTS ON THE GROUND" SONG WAS WEARING A" FREE TROY DAVIS" STICKER ON HIS SHIRT. TROY DAVIS IS A CONVICTED (COP KILLER) FROM SAVANNAH, GA AND IS ON DEATH ROW. PLEASE KEEP OFFICER MARK MACPHAIL, DAVIS' VICTIM AND HIS FAMILY IN YOUR THOUGHTS.

Well since you brought it up "julie", There is strong evidence that Troy Davis is, in fact, INNOCENT. His conviction should be overturned. Seven of the witnesses against him have recanted their testimony, and several of them indicated the actual shooter was the PROSECUTION'S MAIN WITNESS AGAINST DAVIS.

Get your facts straight meathead.

As for all those shouting "pay the general", pay him with what? He hasn't recorded the song, distributed it through normal channels, etc...from what revenue stream do you propose he be paid? His song hasn't generated any money for anyone. Hits on a website do not automatically generate cash unless you are talking about the ad revenue, and there is no contract in place to pay him or anyone else from that.

Recording artists WITH contracts are losing money due to all the illegal downloading, why not worry about them?

LOVED Brett's rendition, even though he left out a line. I am a HUGE Brett fan and it was so.... cool seeing him SO... excited after the game.

It's going to be interesting - MINN v NO. I like both teams, BUT I'm going w/MINNESOTA. Now, if they go all the way, THEN I'll bet Brett may agree to team up with The General.

#31 - thanks for the links to the Troy Davis websites. I've emailed the White House and asked them to look into this. Even if Troy is guilty, which it sounds like he's not, murdering people is wrong. Life in prison is much more human and actually costs us less, in taxes, then the death sentence. If you murder a murderer then you send the message that murder is acceptable. If Red Coles is the one who actually murdered Officer Macphail then he needs to be brought to justice.

One more thing Julie, my father was a police officer killed in the line of duty- and I STILL say, this man should not be executed if there is a reasonable doubt of his innocense now.

Pay the man. And it doesn't matter if wears a button calling Hitler a Saint. His opinion has nothing to do with what he's owed. Just for the record, I used the Hitler analogy because it IS so extreme. And I'm glad this topic has provided a forum for people to discuss the convicted, obviously a number of folks have something to say.

Pay him for what? What lost revenue is his? Everyone sings "happy birthday" too, but no one is losing money because of it.

You think the guy should get paid just because he is recognizable now?

With that thinking, you should start paying Michael Lohan, Jon Gosselin, Tila Tequila too- just for 'being famous' now.

I'm pretty sure he signed a waiver with Idol saying they can use his image, voice, etc. however they like.

@46. Never said it was about good/bad cops. But this man may be put to death with all this doubt surrounding the case because it is a black man accused of killing a cop and because of that, there is rush to convict even if it is an innocent man because someone has to pay for killing a cop. But on the flip side, the victims of a murdering cop dont even get to see the cop go to jail even when evidence and a video shows something as blatant as the cop that killed a faced down handcuffed man! Do you think if this was a cop in Troy's place, he would be faced w/jail let alone death penalty. No he would be free on paid leave! And yes, in a racist society, you can be innocent and in jail! Just because its hard for you to believe in your little alabaster bubble, dont mean it doesn't happen.

As soon as I find the footage of this cop, I will post it to see for yourselves!

I think everyone should know that American Idol is "cybersquatting" on Larry Platt's song name, which means one of their producers bought the domain name "PantsontheGround.com", and is pointing it DIRECTLY to American Idol's website. This is egregious in the domain industry, you can't steal someone's intellectual property, including songs, lyrics, trademarks and their celebrity names by registering a domain name for it.

So did Larry Platt give permission for the person to whom the domain is registered to at this moment?
Patrick Lynn
7800 Beverly Blvd.
Ste 251
Los Angeles, California 90036

And does anyone realize there is a producer on AI named "Patrick Lynn"?

To give you a quick idea how valuable the domain name "Pantsontheground.com" could be for Larry Platt, its estimated over 1000 people a day type in that domain name and are directed to AI's website. That's like giving AI free advertising based on intellectual property (the song) of someone who performed on the show. AI own's the performance, NOT THE SONG RIGHTS, NOR THE DOMAIN NAME.

There's going to be some scandal coming from this one...
