Sam Champion

Clash Over Tornado Coverage

5/11/2010 5:55 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

"Good Morning America" weatherman Sam Champion made a cameo appearance on a local Oklahoma newscast this morning -- when he was caught bitching at a news crew on live TV.

Sam Champion
It all went down near the crumbled remains of a local gas station that was knocked over when a tornado hit Oklahoma City yesterday. The crew from KOKH was doing a live shot at the scene, when Champion -- who was setting up to do a shot at the same gas station -- came into frame.

Champion -- clearly pissed that he was being shot by another crew -- started to bark orders to the KOKH crew to get "back" and then shoved his notebook in front of the camera to block the shot.

While the KOKH camera continued to broadcast live from the scene, Champion -- who was once again in the shot -- told the crew, "You know the deal." The KOKH cameraman can be heard saying, "What deal?"

Champion responds, "You know where you're supposed to be ... so be there. It's alright ... it's all good ... so just be there."

Generally, news crews don't shoot outside talent as a professional courtesy -- but it was a live shot at the scene of a disaster.

So the question is ...

The female commentator knew exactly what she was doing. She was looking at this to boost her own career.

All he had to do was get out of the shot, it wasn't like ABC was filming at the same time. Sam is going to be 50 next year he should start acting his age. You probably couldn't tell with all the botox he has shot his face up with. It's not due to good genes.

Local news trumps national news? Who you kidding?! Both of these stations are looking for ratings and getting the story out. One has the ability to get the news out nationally. Others have a limited audience. How would you feel if you were on vacation and couldn't get news from your hometown because the local news is getting in the way of national coverage? What about families from outside the area wanting to know about their loved ones?

Bottom line, these news reports do nothing other than perhaps offer a glimpse of a loved one or home. It does nothing to help the people.

How dare Loser act this way. He doesn't own the disaster area and not everyone watches the show he's on.

National news is never there until after the fact. These local people were there all day yesterday and all night last night. National news may be a "bigger deal" but in reality - they aren't who we, the people experiencing the travesty, are looking to in times like these. Oklahomans are nationally known for their kindness, graciousness , and willingness to help their fellow man in times of disaster - this guy can suck it.

1St, From an objective stand point, It seems that Sam Champion was in the right and kept a leveled head even though the local news reporter was rude. 2nd, If you think that your little one truck town's news channel while get more coverage than GMA, then I want some of what you all are smoking or drinking. 3rd, If you are so devastated, what are you doing on TMZ right now. Hypocrites.

He acted like an arrogant a$$! Even if the local crew was "wrong," he could have been nicer.

I've always been a fan of Sam Champion, but, yes, he was being a jerk. Our local weather and news teams worked for HOURS yesterday until the storms subsided. Many of them went in harms way to keep us informed what was going on. And, then, a national news crew comes in and acts like they OWN the disaster area? Sorry, but no.
This was a frikkin live shot, not something that was set up in advance. He should have shown some courtesy and stepped aside while the people who were actually affected by this storm were reporting about it.

I've lost all respect for him.
