4/13/2011 10:00 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Kobe Bryant just got off the phone with the president of a gay rights organization -- and apologized for using a gay slur last night ... TMZ has learned.

Bryant spoke with Human Rights Campaign honcho Joe Solmonese -- who tells TMZ, "I applaud Kobe Bryant for his swift apology. We had a very sincere conversation in which he expressed his heartfelt regret for the hurt that his words caused."

Solmonese adds, "He told me that it’s never OK to degrade or tease, and that he understands how his words could unfortunately give the wrong impression that this is appropriate conduct."

"At the end of a difficult day, I applaud Kobe for coming forward and taking responsibility for his actions."

LoL@the definition of honky

Posted at 7:42 PM on Apr 13, 2011 by N.O.Lady

Yes, Whites have as often been stereotyped in the past in America by Blacks as the reverse. Whites have often been portrayed as without rhythm, stiff, square, dull, boring, plain, play-things-by-the-book conformist-types, prejudiced, etc. But sometimes, whites were just called honkies because they were white. Like as in honky-tonk music.

Kobe Bryant is just like OJ Simpson, Gary Glitter, R. Kelly, Mel Gibson, Lindsay Lohan, Robert Blake and so on. He is a famous celebrity who has let fame and fortune go to his head and now thinks he can do or say whatever he wants. Saying the "f" word is just like Michael Richards saying the "n" word. Kobe Bryant is not a good person. He has been accused of rape and says stuff he knows is wrong. He is a great basketball player but definitley no Michael Jordan.

It's not like he was talking about a gay person. $100,000 fine? That's pretty crazy.

Janey #85, it's people like you that make me want to vomit....my little brother is gay. You say it's a choice, I'm pretty sure he didn't choose to be judged by silly people like you. What's not normal is you acting like it's not. It's not a big deal, why are you making it one? Keep on living your life, you don't have to worry about him, he's just fine.

PRO US, I am a fan of your comments and such as I have seen you on the Charlie Sheen posts, but is "honkie" like calling a black person the N word, or the gays the F word? I just never heard it before, and it sounds like hunk, so I want to make sure I don't insult a white person if I call them a hunk/ie, is all. Not trying to start a war of words here of nasty name calling over me asking a question. OK, also, don't you think that SAM is RAYMOND from the Charlie posts?

I don't know what is more disturbing in these comments, all the obvious hate for gay people or Sam saying that Kobe committed a hate crime.

@MoonDust: First, thanks for your nice comment to me. Second, yes, it's similar but it's not quite as bad partly because of context. In a society that is majority White, it can hardly be as offensive to hurl an epithet that confirms the other person is a member of that majority group as an insult that highlights another person is a member of an oppressed minority group. It's similar in that it conjures up some or all of the negative stereotypes associated with each group. Of course, stereotypes are not true in general but perpetuated by bigots.

The use of the term "Honkie" was popularized on TV shows such as All In The Family in which the popular character and White bigot Archie Bunker called his neighbour George Jefferson "N-gro" or "N-gger", I can't remember which one, and in return was insulted with the term "Honkie". The term was also used by characters in the TV shows The Jeffersons about a rich, Black family, Sanford and Son, with Black comedian Redd Foxx and Puerto Rican comedian Freddie Prinze and Mork and Mindy with comedians Robin Williams and Jonathan Winters.

TMZ only acted this way because HARVEY was offended as a promiscuous gay man! Not that there is anything wrong with being gay

The pressure from Hollyweird demanding penance for this sin, was too much for any man to bare. Ans so goes another day in La La Land.

Next, 'Mother Of All Issues' please.
