NFL Star Torrey Smith

Stellar Game

Helped Family Grieve

EXCLUSIVE

Torrey Smith's family is incredibly proud of the way the NFL star played in last night's Ravens vs. Patriots game ... telling TMZ, his performance was the ultimate tribute to his younger brother, who died just hours before Torrey took the field.

We spoke with Torrey's grandmother, Mary Smith, who tells us Torrey called her to let her know he would be playing and dedicating the game to his 19-year-old brother Tevin Jones who passed away in a motorcycle crash early Sunday morning.

Mary tells us Torrey didn't have to call ... she already knew he was going to play -- telling us, "He wanted to get out there and win that game for his brother and the Lord made that happen for him."

Mary says Smith's entire family gathered at her home in Virginia to watch Torrey play -- "I said look at my grandson. He’s gonna win that game. They have to win the game.”

FYI -- Torrey played the game of his life ... scoring 2 TDs in the Ravens' incredible come-from-behind victory.

Mary says the family was very emotional during the game ... crying both tears of joy and sadness.

“[When he scored his first touchdown] it was wonderful" ... "That was for his little brother.”

Torrey is expected to return home sometime today to help the family with funeral arrangements.

Really???? A few hours after his brother died and he was able to play? Also, his family was crying tears of joy and sadness? This is the most narcissistic thing I have heard. How can someone not be crippled by the loss of a child and a brother that they can focus on something so trivial (in comparison) only a few hours after the event? What the hell is wrong with these people? Well I guess we know he must be the only goose laying the golden egg for the family so maybe it's easy to turn off and emotion.

To hear that bad news and still go out there and play is just incredible. Thats a true inspiration. May your brother rest in peace.

Yes, it's a tragedy his brother had passed away. However, there is no need to be tributing a "game" to a deceased loved one. How about staying out of trouble, gangs, drugs, and living a proper life? How about setting a goal that is much more difficult to achieve that in which requires a greater strength and with a spirtual one at that? Running around with a football seems to lack such that and will probably be forgotten 5 years from now. How about speaking for DMV on proper motorcycle safety? Maybe thousands of people might hear and adhere to your message and maybe even save more lives.

You are all a feast for the worms one way or the other. Better to worry about other things.

Sorry to hear about your brother dude I feel your pain, we lost a cousin last year who was like a brother to us to a car accident, it's painful, but you played for your bro and that'll help a lot, will make the day much easier to look back on in the future, condolences

All i know is, if my brother, or someone who i was sooooo close with died, i would be DEVESTATED, and wouldn't even want to go out, let alone play in a game.....UGH.....

People mourn differently and no one has the right to judge how they do it.

It amazes me the strength some people have during times of adversity. Im sure his brother wouldnt have wanted it any other way. If they do bury the football with his brother that would be so awesome. God bless Mr. Torrey and may they find peace knowing he is now in Heaven with our Heavenly Father. RIP

I think all the mean, heartless comments come from very young people who maybe have not lost anybody in their family (or close friends) and really don't know what it's like. I know how the bereaved are --some drunk, --some crying and some just staring into space being sad. The understanding and compassion comes with living life.

Too bad the game will be remembered for the Buzzards fans chanting BS.
