Miami Dolphins

Condemn

Mike Wallace's Homophobic Tweet

4/29/2013 1:45 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF
EXCLUSIVE

0429_mike_wallace_getty_2Mike Wallace needs to learn how to RESPECT gay people ... so says the Miami Dolphins organization, which says it strongly condemns the comments made by their star receiver.

A rep for the NFL team tells TMZ ... the Dolphins took immediate action once they learned about Wallace's homophobic tweet, in which he condescendingly questions why Collins would want to "mess with other guys" when there are so many beautiful girls in the world.

The Dolphins tell us ..."Mike Wallace has apologized for his comments, and we have addressed the matter with him."

"Mike’s comments do not reflect the views of the Miami Dolphins. We believe in a culture of inclusiveness and respect, and any statements to the contrary are in no way acceptable to our organization."

"We will address the entire team about our policy of inclusion and make sure they all understand the importance of respecting individual choices.”

Wallace has since deleted the tweet.

TMZ spoke with a rep for the NFL, who tells us the league office will review the situation -- and decide if the player will be fined or suspended.

I find that most homophobics are usually the ones questioning their sexuality...

Wow.. I dont see him as a homophobic person. He simply posed a question. It wasnt like he said "Im not playing with no gay dudes" or etc. Now if he really wanted to know the answer to that question, he should have asked Collins personally. Not tweeted it.

BEING GAY IS NOT A CHOICE...Jesus Christ, why is that a difficult thing for people to understand...Straight people don't choose to be straight, why do they think we choose to be gay?

Ummmm Freedom of Speech!!! OMG no one can have an opinion anymore. This choice that people are making going against nature is just welcomed in the media and government because they want to slow down the population. Gay=non-reproduction. Be gay but stop trying to shove it down people throats!

So...often with men especially, jokes/defensive humour/insults are used as ways to sort of stir the pot. These are chances for them to ask questions without seeming like they're asking. While I don't think people should be victimized, I think understanding the power of socialization is quite important. Rather than telling him to shut up, which will now stigmatize him and make him quite possibly angry/angrier, we could have used it as a chance to educate. I'm sure he's not the only guy wondering why it is a guy is interested in other guys. He just had the balls to say it. Yes, it was inappropriate, but unless Miami Dolphins can show and prove they have provided sensitivity training (And this should go for the whole of the NFL) then they should not be so quick to punish the players who quite frankly, don't know any different.
