Michael Vick

Pit Bull Euthanized

After Dogfighting Career

Sad news in the dog world -- the top pit bull from Michael Vick's dogfighting ring has been euthanized.

The dog -- named Lucas -- was humanely euthanized Wednesday at the Best Friends Animal Society in Kanab, Utah because of accumulating health problems. He was around 13 years old.

Lucas -- who was Vick's grand champion -- was one of nearly 2 dozen dogs that were rehabilitated at BFAS after they were rescued from the ring in 2007. Unfortunately, Lucas was not allowed to be adopted because of his vicious fighting history -- and therefore had to remain a lifetime-care dog at the animal sanctuary.

We're told Lucas was  one of the friendliest dogs at the sanctuary -- and never stopped grinning.

Best Friends CEO Gregory Castle said, it was "a blessing in every way to be around him and to witness the wonderful effects on everyone he met."

No such thing as a bad pet, just bad owners. Glad he got a chance to live out his last years in the hands of people that actually cared about him

Sad he had to be put down cause of health issues. Happy that this poor abused animal got a chance to live his last years in peace and with people who actually cared about him. The do***entary about this Dog Sanctuary and the work they did with Vicks Pit Bulls is really worth watching. If it were for me Vick would be given a life sentence and be forced to fight others to survive. Maybe rip out all of his teeth too, like he did with Georgia one of his Pit Bulls.

To the person who said Who cares about a bunch of dogs? well you're an insensitive pig. How dare you?!?!? It's not the breed it's the stupid people who raise them. I have an Akita and they are labeled as "dangerous" but my dog has better manners than some humans I know. There sure are alot of ignorant people out there.

All dogs go to heaven...I was terrified of pitbulls because of their so-called rep, but my friend has one and he wouldn't harm anyone and he's never shown signs of aggression. Sucks that the dogs get a bad rep because they have bad and irresponsible owners

Can someone please explain to me how anyone can encourage the continued breeding of THE best dog for killing other dogs?

To everyone who thinks pitbulls are so horrible:

These sick human beings train these dogs to fight. It was not the dogs' choice. Sure, they have the strength to do it (like many other breeds), but they don't decide to get in a ring to fight to the death. Certain irresponsible people have decided that they're "valuable", which is why they're usually treated horribly and not properly trained, leading to the stories we see so often in the news. Remember when German Shepards were deemed dangerous? Dobermans? Rottweilers? It's the owner, not the breed.

By the way, I am against people breeding pitbulls. There's thousands of animals dying in shelters every day, so NO dog needs to be bred. I say adopt an innocent pitbull waiting for a good home in a shelter. Only 1 in 600 pitbulls find good homes. In other words, why should PEOPLE keep breeding???
