Cory Monteith
's body was cremated Tuesday in Vancouver following a private viewing with his family and girlfriend Lea Michele, TMZ has learned -- but Cory's father wasn't invited ... and he's heartbroken.

Cory's dad Joe Monteith -- who is divorced from Cory's mom Ann -- tells TMZ ... he was informed of the cremation after the fact, adding he's "totally devastated" he didn't get a chance to see Cory's body.

We're told Cory's body was released yesterday to his mom, and she decided to hold a viewing at the hospital with Lea and Cory's brother Shaun. Following the viewing, we're told Cory's mom decided to have him cremated.

Cory's dad tells us, "I always loved both my sons and am going to miss Cory very very much. I'm saddened at the fact that I couldn't have been there to see my son before he was cremated."

As for Cory's alleged heroin use ... his dad says he's "shocked."

Before you go off on Cory's mother, consider that she may have been carrying out Cory's wishes. None of us know the family situation and so, we are completely unable to make any judgments about decisions the family makes.

What a creep the Mom is. No wonder her kid turned into a druggie.

Even in death, dignity appears to take a back seat.
More typical than we'd like to know in divorce.

That woman have a really angry, vindictive spirit, devoid of heart. A mother wouldn't do that to her son.

Forgiveness to the Mother; mother in the definitive term, not her actions as that's motherless

Condolences to the Dad for that hideous act during your grief

Blessings to the soul of your son

All the Father had to do was get on a plane and fly to the West Coast. It's not like he wasn't in the same Country. And he was notified of the death when it happened

It is pretty harsh and cruel not to let a father see his dead child for the last time, no matter what the family history or dynamics.

that's awful of his mother...short of him trying to kill or molest Cory as a child, there is no excuse even if he was a deadbeat

Seriously

Why is it important to see someone when they died when you didn't bother to when they were alive?????

So many of you are judging this mother on the decision that she made, yet not one of you knows the relationship that Cory had with his father, who did not know his son had a drug problem. Unless he has been on an island with no electricity it has been in the news for years to include his drug problems began when he was 13 years old. So really judging the Mom when it seems now the father is looking for sympathy!

Sad, but if they were close or on good terms surely he'd have been invited. Poor family doesn't need flack right now. We'll never know the truth of the family's relationshipa. It's their business. Condolences to all.

That was evil the mother did that. He had a right to see his son regardless of what went on with the parents or whether he was a wonderful father or not - still he deserved to be able to see his kid one last time.
