U.S. Govt. To Troops

Screw The Shutdown

We'll Let You Watch Football

10/7/2013 9:51 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

U.S. troops just scored a major military victory -- the right to watch NFL games again -- because the top dude at the Pentagon has done an about-face ... TMZ has learned.

We're told ... Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel is ordering certain furloughed employees at the Dept. of Defense to return to work ... and that includes the Armed Forces Network -- which had to stop broadcasting games because its staff was furloughed.

As we reported ... during Fox's football coverage yesterday,  Howie Long slammed the government shutdown  ... for curtailing the football broadcasts and damaging service members' morale.

Hagel says Pentagon officials decided they could end furloughs "for employees whose responsibilities contribute to the morale, well-being, capabilities and readiness of service members."

The order is effective immediately -- the AFN is already getting its broadcast operations back up to speed.

Monday Night Football is on, baby.

dont think these people are getting paid! they were called back to work but without a the govt paying bills they arent getting paid for their time. today those that have been working all week as essential were told they might get paid for that time, but at 60% of their normal pay.

I'm really happy for our troops and all. Seriously. However, I have been having my pay cut all year due to furloughs. Now it's been a week. I can't pay my bills.

I love my service members but I love to feed my family a tad bit more. How about after 25 years of service to this country...we worry more about ALL of us and pay those us that have faithfully served in any way shape or form.

Not just about sports on TV.

Maybe the idiots in Washington are feeling the ire of the voters over these punitive (and completely unnecessary) actions they are taking. There will be the wrath of the voter come next election cycle.

This ****sucker Hagel doesn't give a rat's ass about military or civilian morale. Just look at his actions. He is an Obama boot licker.

As a member of the Armed Forces overseas, I am very grateful for this development. People in the states don't realize how good they have it. For us, if you don't speak your host nations language fluently, you can forget any sort of entertainment after a long days work. Even if you do speak that language fluently, most times you have to sign a contract and acquire all the necessary hardware in order to even watch any television. And you can forget renting movies at the local Shoppette because most of their limited stock is sure to have been already rented. And then there's the issue of Internet streaming, which is impossible in most places for security reasons or, in our case, lack of a decent connection. So while you people in America commenting on this are signing off and taking a much needed break on the couch with your tv, we are over here without absolutely nothing... Blank screen... No football...no sports...none of the great new shows coming out... Nothing for our children... No re-runs... No contact to our much missed culture. You say "Read a book"? Books in our language have to be ordered from the states so if you don't already have a bookshelf full, forget it. Try and walk a mile in our shoes before you comment on our situation and if this decision was right or wrong. Then you will have earned the right to chime in. Once again, thank you AFN and the American Govt. Your efforts on our part are very much appreciated!
