Tom Cruise

Video Shows Actor Scoffs at War Comparison

TMZ has seen the VIDEOTAPE of Tom Cruise's deposition, and here's what's clear ... he scoffs at the comparison between his job as an actor and a soldier in Afghanistan, but only at the end of a contentious exchange with the opposing lawyer.

We were not able to record the video but we viewed the portion in question several times.  You see a buttoned-up Tom -- wearing a coat, a vest and a white shirt -- sitting almost motionless with his lips pursed, as the lawyer asks:

-- "Now, your counsel has publicly equated your absence from Suri for these extended periods of time as being analogous to someone fighting in Afghanistan.  Are you aware of that?"

As the question is asked, Tom does not change his expression.  He doesn't scoff, laugh or show any sort of shock.  He sits impassively.

Tom's lawyer objects and then says he can answer.  Tom remains stoic.

Then he answers:

-- "I didn't hear the Afghanistan, but that's what it feels like, and certainly on this last movie, it was brutal.  It was brutal."

When Tom says "I didn't hear the Afghanistan, but that's what it feels like," he doesn't laugh but moves in his chair.  When he says "It was brutal, it was brutal" ... Cruise laughs.

Then when the lawyer says "Do you believe the situations [being in a movie and fighting a war in Afghanistan] are the same?" ... Cruise becomes almost indignant and says, "Oh come on."  At this point he is clearly saying they're not the same.

Short story.  It seems like Cruise got sucked into the lawyer's hyperbole and was showing a little too much macho at the beginning of the exchange, when he said, "That's what it feels like.  It was brutal, it was brutal."  And then when the lawyer crystallized it ... Cruise realized what was happening and made a clear statement he didn't view his acting like fighting in a war.

Stories like this fill me with disgust for tabloid news and the cretins who place importance in it. Time to get a life, people. There's nothing to see here.

I'm neither pro-Tom or con-Tom, but I think it is obvious he meant the come on response was meant the way any of us would mean it as in "Come on, let's get real...I'm not saying my work is comparable to that of a soldier in Afghanistan." He was saying the work is very physical and downright brutal. It's not life-threatening. The truly stupid thing he did was to file the lawsuit in the first place. Who the hell believed for a second that he had abandoned his daughter.?Wives? Yes. His children? Most obviously not.

Wow - after reading some of these comments - the scientologists are out in force one again. Lets face it - once a douchebag always a douchebag - regardless of the shoddy reporting by TMZ.

Great job TMZ & Harvey! Never pegged u guys/girls for being investigative reporters & u all' don't claim to do so....but it did spill out of his mouth...under oath...His "cult" following will deny it...but think you guys nailed it! Let the rest of the "sheep people" follow him but millions of service people think he just tanked his so-called "acting career" & will never watch his movies again! Hold ur heads high..he said it in a legal depo..to gain 50 mil for being called an absentee father which he is/was?!? All TMZ did was repeat what he said....guessing he thought no one would hear it?! What a moron - props to TMZ & Harvey..Defend urself's...sure u r the next he will sue cuz he can....slimy lil man ain't he?! He will be remembered like a fart in a hurricane & how appropriate! Nice job TMZ..no one else had a pair big enuff too take this suffering fool on - u did & Thank you!!!!!!

Come on, you had to see the video to figure this out? I would say TMZ jumped the gun on this one, but what really happened was a little creative interpretation in order to create a headline. Tom Cruise used to be the last person I'd defend, but you guys screwed up and came off looking like reporters from a trashy tabloid instead of the "credible source" you claim to be. The only way to save face here is to own up to it, likely on the live show. Way to become the story, guys.

The magazine cover does say "44 DAY WITHOUT DADDY/TOM"... so to a small child... and maybe society in general that does indicate "abandonment" (just like "THE WARLOCK" choosing 2 shows a day, a 100 pages of dialogue and 70 hour workweeks over his kids)... PLUS... isn't it a "law" in Scientology that you cannot associate yourself with ANY PERSON that is a "threat" to the cult? If I'm not mistaken his other kids have NOTHING to do with Nicole Kidman (their adoptive mother) b/c the kids are in the cult and NK is not...

REGARDLESS... he DID insinuate indirectly that shooting a movie IS comparable to being deployed in Afghanastan... He says he DIDN'T HEAR the reference but YES... it feels like that... so HE IS AGREEING with the comparison...

Still sounds like he is comparing himself as an actor to that of a soldier. Mr over inflated ego needs to eat some humble pie! He's not all that, not even close!
