Gayle King is catching some flak online after casually using a gay slur on live TV ... throwing it out in the middle of a joke she was quoting.

The TV host was interviewing Matteo Lane -- a well-known author and comedian -- on "CBS Mornings" about his new book "Your Pasta Sucks: A Cookbook" ... when she quoted one of Lane's jokes back at him.

King says, "Can we talk about the stand-up? Can I just say one joke? I hope I don't get in trouble. You do a riff about white women who approached you, and they said something about cooking, and you said, 'What in the f****try are you talking about?'"

Audrey Hale -- the Nashville school shooter who killed three children and three adults in 2023 -- committed the crime for fame and notoriety ... this according to police.

The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department released its final report on the shooting after two years of investigations ... and, they claim Hale was motivated by a desire for notoriety.

Investigators note Hale wanted to die in a way that would matter and be remembered ... even studying the notoriety of Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold after Colorado's Columbine High School shooting back in 1999.

The reality star's sister, Chanel Williams, shared the tragic news with BBC News, saying they're still completely devastated by the loss -- but the family is determined to raise awareness about the dangers of ketamine by teaming up with a substance abuse charity.

Chanel said in a statement, "Ketamine is an extremely dangerous drug that is becoming more and more prevalent in the UK. A new bill proposed in Texas could charge transgender people with a state felony if they lie about their biological sex assigned at birth ... and two lawmakers are defending the harsh punishment.

Texas State Reps. Steve Toth and Nate Schatzline joined us on "TMZ Live" Tuesday and we asked them about the proposed bill that would add a new form of fraud related to gender identity.

As Toth and Schatzline explain, the bill -- Texas House Bill 3817 -- says a transgender Texan would commit "gender identity fraud" if they lie on state records or to employers about their biological sex ... and they would be charged with a state felony, which is punishable by up to two years behind bars.

Hunter Schafer -- a prominent transgender actress and activist -- says the U.S. government has changed one of her major documents ... showing her passport, which now identifies her as male, to her fans.

The "Euphoria" star posted a video after she received her new passport in the mail ... claiming she opened it up and was surprised to see a little "M" instead of an "F" listed under the gender category.

She says she filled out the paperwork the same as always -- identifying herself as a female ... but, she adds she never got her birth certificate changed, and thinks the department that issues the crucial travel document may have cross-referenced her application with the other document.
