Katy Perry is NOT at this year's Met Gala -- but the internet certainly thought she was for a moment, and it's all thanks to that tricky AI ... which cranked some very real-looking shots.

Photos of the singer that purported to place her at the high-fashion event started circulating Monday -- with a couple of X users randomly throwing these shots into the mix ... and hoping no one would notice they were totally fake.

Well, for a little while ... their plan worked, 'cause folks recirculated the images -- which seemed to picture KP in a couple different floral-esque outfits. Eventually, folks caught on.

A brutal assault of a man on the streets of L.A. was caught on camera this week -- and as shocking as the footage is ... what's even more surprising is that no one's been arrested.

TMZ has obtained video that captured this horrific incident early Monday morning -- around 2:00 AM PT, we're told -- where two different parties were facing off on Hollywood Blvd. ... and where one guy who was squaring up (wearing a hat) got pepper sprayed badly.

Unclear what exactly led up to this, but as you can see ... a larger man is hovering on the outskirts of the action, and as the dude in the hat gets riled up, he blasts him in the face.

The 17-time Grammy winner released the new song -- titled "Not Like Us" -- about an hour ago ... and, in it, Kendrick finds a series of different ways to refer to Drake as a pedophile before just calling him one.
