Reese Witherspoon
just pled no contest and her husband Jim Toth pled guilty in Atlanta to charges stemming from his DUI arrest and her bust for mouthing off to the arresting officer ... TMZ has learned.

Reese -- who was arrested for disorderly conduct April 19 after disobeying an officer's order to stay in the car -- pled no contest to the infraction.  You'll recall during her husband's arrest an inebriated Reese asked the cop, "Do you know my name?"  She also told him he was gonna be on national news.

Reese -- who was not present but represented by her lawyer, Bruce Morris -- entered the plea to physical obstruction of another and will pay a $213 fine, and that's it.

As for Jim, he was in court and pled guilty to driving under the influence.  He'll get no jail time but he must perform 40 hours of community service and attend an alcohol education program.  He's been placed on probation for 12 months.

The judge said to Jim, "Consider yourself fortunate you didn't injure your passenger [Reese] and didn't kill anyone."

This is an unusual move for celebrities, who often try and spin their legal woes.  Reese was on GMA this morning ... saying she and Jim took full responsibility for their screw-ups and even admitted they exercised really bad judgment when he got behind the wheel drunk.

Her GMA appearance was just hours before Reese and Jim essentially said the same thing to a judge -- accepting responsibility and taking their lumps.

Smart move, this will be forgotten sooner now since they're taking responsibility. I respect Reese, admitted error, took the consequences and will be moving on.

Bout time a celebrity says, "Yup, I did it. I won't contest this." In the end, that's easier on everyone, including the tax payers. Had they contested it, gonet rhough the process of trying to weasel out of it, it would have cost everyone so much more... over nothing. Hopefully, they've learned their lesson. If anything, the embarrassment Reese went through is far more costly than any fine or punishment... she'll be dealing with that for the rest of her life.

Wow ...

Good to hear. I love it when people take responsibility and say, man I messed up! I can forgive so easily.

While I applaud them both for not trying to spin this incident away, I'm wondering this: If she is taking FULL responsibility, why didn't she plead guilty instead of no contest?

I DONT buy this spin, keeps saying '1 too many glasses of wine." Good PR comment, they don't fool me, they were wasted and probably get that way a lot!

She pleaded no contest and didnt appear in court. Yep. She's a coward. Granted, she's still getting the punishment but this just shows who she is.
