Carmelo Anthony

Don't Count On Me

Joining the Lakers

7/24/2013 5:00 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Dear Los Angeles Lakers fans,

We're sorry to inform you ... it doesn't seem very likely Carmelo Anthony will be dishing to Kobe Bryant any time soon, despite reports to the contrary.

Anthony was leaving Cecconi's in West Hollywood this week when we asked straight up if he could see himself in purple and gold after his contract with the Knicks runs out.

CA's response? "Ummmmm, I doubt it."

Carmelo teased us a little bit ... saying he owns purple and gold shoes -- but made it pretty clear he has no plans to wear them on the hardwood.

Anthony also told TMZ ... he's NOT secretly plotting with LeBron James to join the same NBA squad ... though he admits, they're pretty damn good when they play together.

Still, don't count out the Lakers entirely ... 'cause when the time comes, you can bet L.A. will bust out the checkbook -- and nothing changes a mind like a couple of zeros.

Stay tuned ...

Would be nice to see these two play together again!

If it was just about the zeros the Knicks can pay him about 20-40 million dollars more over the life of his next contract than the Lakers can pay him (signing your own player gives you an edge as you can pay them more than another team can)

I miss the days when franchise players stayed with their team for their whole career. You know, like Kobe is doing. Carmelo is already playing in a major market on a team that's better than the Lakers. Why should he move?

The Knicks are in no position to win they have over paid players who can't stay healthy the nets are the best team in NY that's why he wants to leave he's not going to say it while under contract

Wow idiot TMZ. You do know that Carmelo while under contract with the Knicks, can't talk about becoming part of another team while under contract.

The Lakers have dangled the prospect of all these great players joining them next year in hopes of having everyone look past the awful team their GM has made them. Now that the Jerry West years have finally faded, Mitch Kupchak has showed how incompetent he is. The Lakers won't get Melo or James or anyone else big. There has been a tectonic shift in LA and the Clippers are the new king.

David Stern screwed the Lakers last year on the Chris Paul deal. So glad he has gone. Worst commissioner ever.

Why would anyone want to live in LA? I guess NY couldn't be much better. Seems like a giant ant hill with everyone climbing all over each other to get what they want.

Melo is definitely staying in New York!! He's their franchise player, everyone says how he and Amare can't play together. Why would he go to a new team and start over with Lebron James and who else? Everyone's idea of the NBA reminds me of my sons playing their nba video games. Just throw the best players you can on one team and wanting them to win. It's an accident waiting to happen. stay in New York Melo, no matter what everyone wants, (Brooklyn being the better team) the Knicks are the number one team in New York!!
