The Federal Aviation Administration says staffing levels were below the "normal" amount when the deadly plane crash occurred over Washington, D.C. ... and, it looks like it was a decision made by a supervisor.

The New York Times -- citing an anonymous source -- says an air traffic control supervisor combined the responsibilities of handling both helicopters and plane flight paths before the usual time ... though it's currently not clear why.

Basically, before 9:30 PM, Reagan Washington National Airport has two controllers -- one to handle the choppers and the other to handle the airplanes -- and, after 9:30 they transition to only one person because traffic lessens significantly.

CNN obtained 2 clips of the Black Hawk colliding with the American Airlines plane over the Potomac River Wednesday night, killing 67 people in total. The outlet reports cell phones recorded the footage from surveillance cameras that captured the tragic incident.

In the first video, the helicopter is moving rapidly toward the plane before they collide in midair, triggering a massive fireball. You then see the wreckage rain down into the river below.

Nancy Kerrigan was unable to contain her emotions while speaking about the tragic American Airlines crash that claimed the lives of nearly 70 people, including a contingency of U.S. ice skaters who just wrapped up a big competition in the Midwest.

The American Airlines pilots killed in the tragic Washington, D.C. crash have been identified.

First Officer Sam Lilley, 28, died alongside 34-year-old Captain Jonathan Campos in the mid-air collision with a Black Hawk helicopter near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport Wednesday night.

Lilley’s dad, Timothy, confirmed his son's death to FOX 5 Atlanta. Sam, who was recently engaged, was following in his dad's pilot footsteps, and was months away from being promoted to captain.

Extremely tense audio reveals air traffic controllers warned the U.S. Army helicopter that fatally crashed into an American Airlines passenger plane in Washington D.C. Wednesday night moments before the catastrophe.

With escalating urgency, the control tower asks ... "PAT25, do you have the CRJ in sight?" and instructs the military Black Hawk helicopter to "pass behind" the aircraft. That warning came about 30 seconds before American Airlines Flight 5342 -- a Bombardier CRJ 700 -- collided with the chopper in mid-air near Reagan Washington National Airport.

The collision sent both aircraft crashing into the icy Potomac River ... with no survivors expected. There were 64 people on the American Airlines plane -- including four crew members -- and 3 soldiers were on board the Black Hawk helicopter.

At least 30 bodies have been pulled from the river, and the first responders now say their rescue mission has become a recovery effort.

8:30 AM PT -- A spokesperson for the Washington Wizards tells TMZ Sports they're planning to honor the crash victims with a moment of silence before their game against the Lakers in D.C. later Thursday.

D.C.-area sports teams are sending their thoughts and prayers to the dozens of people who are believed to have lost their lives in a midair plane crash Wednesday night.

The Nationals said in a statement they were "devastated" by the fatal collision that occurred when a Black Hawk helicopter seemed to fly into an American Airlines jet just above the Potomac River.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their loved ones," the MLB org. wrote.

President Donald Trump is weighing in on Wednesday night's fatal midair plane crash, blaming the helicopter pilot for the tragedy in which officials fear there's no survivors.

DT hopped on his Truth Social platform after the American Airlines flight collided with the Black Hawk helicopter, putting the onus for it all on the operator of the chopper.
