Dallas Cowboys Player

Dies in Car Wreck

Teammate Arrested

12/8/2012 11:57 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF
breaking news

Jerry Brown, a linebacker on the Dallas Cowboys practice squad, died early this morning in a single-car accident -- and his teammate, Josh Brent, was arrested on charges of intoxication manslaughter.

According to police, Brent (see above) was driving at a high rate of speed at around 2:20 AM when his car "hit the outside curb," flipped over and came to rest in the middle of the road.

When cops came to the scene, Brent was dragging Brown away from the vehicle ... which had come to rest upside down and was on fire. Brown was unresponsive and was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

Officers at the scene suspected alcohol to be a factor, so they gave Brent a field sobriety test, which he failed. His blood was later drawn at the hospital to determine his blood alcohol level. Those results are not yet known.

Brent was arrested by Irving PD and booked on a second degree felony charge at 4:14 AM and is being held without bail.

Brent pled guilty to a misdemeanor DUI charge while in college ... where he and Brown were teammates.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones released a statement today, saying, "We are deeply saddened by the news of this accident and the passing of Jerry Brown. At this time, our hearts and prayers and deepest sympathies are with the members of Jerry’s family and all of those who knew him and loved him."

The incident comes just one week after Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher killed his girlfriend and then himself.

His previous DUI conviction could sink him. The DUI driver who killed 3 people including Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart was sentenced to 51 years in prison because he had a previous DUI conviction and was warned of the consequences of drunk driving then.

The days of DUI drivers who kill getting a slap on the wrist is over. More and more DUI drivers are doing hard time.

I am sorry for the death of the passenger. But I really have very little sympathy for these (mostly) marginally educated men. Trust me, my opinion has nothing to do with thecolor of the skin...I knew John Riggins when I was a Univ. of Kansas...and he was dumber than a sack of hoe handles and helped in many subjects to pass! The girl he was going out with then filled us all in on the details! These "boy-men" are playing a kid's game earning tons of money and being idolized. No wonder they (mostly) have no idea how to be responsible for their actions. Their big life has been handed to them. Do not vilify me too badly...because I do know that there are some fine men playing this game!

Well now Bob Costas will attack cars and demand they be banned - it turns out that objects do not kill people - people do - cars, knives, hammers, hands and seldom guns

The cowboys have been going in the wrong direction for awhile. Bryant fighting in night club. Then he slap his mom twice. He shld be playing. Chad Johnson hit evelyn. He he was fired from the team. Michael vick goes to jail for dog fighting he had to start his life over. He deserved a second chance. It use to be time when when nfl didn't take this bull**** but I'm guessing its not about the family anymore its about who wins the most games. But when something like happens you dnt deserve a second chance. Money can make you do stupip things. But u cant keep you save your life. And the person who posted the comment about it should have been romo thats very low of you to wish dealth on anyone. You need to pray.

This I know for sure, if Josh Brent didn't own and drive a car, Jerry Brown would be alive and Josh Brent would not be in jail. Why are football players allowed to own and drive cars?

If there weren't any cars or booze, Jerry Brown would be alive today.

Bob Costas

Americans have no need for cars that are capable of exceeding the local speed limit. This is not a football issue it is a motor vehicle issue. Get these fast cars out of the hands of ordinary citizens who have no legitimate need for them and these types of tragedies will end!

"We should ban procreation, had Josh Brent and the rest of mankind never been born, no one would have died" - Bob Costas

Its North Dallas Forty but without the humor. The NFL is now becoming like a mini Obama-Liberal world... pampered kids demanding more and giving less and expecting all others to tolerate their arrogance. It Welcome to the New America where responsibility is only for the fools.
