Dallas Cowboys Player

Dies in Car Wreck

Teammate Arrested

12/8/2012 11:57 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF
breaking news

Jerry Brown, a linebacker on the Dallas Cowboys practice squad, died early this morning in a single-car accident -- and his teammate, Josh Brent, was arrested on charges of intoxication manslaughter.

According to police, Brent (see above) was driving at a high rate of speed at around 2:20 AM when his car "hit the outside curb," flipped over and came to rest in the middle of the road.

When cops came to the scene, Brent was dragging Brown away from the vehicle ... which had come to rest upside down and was on fire. Brown was unresponsive and was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

Officers at the scene suspected alcohol to be a factor, so they gave Brent a field sobriety test, which he failed. His blood was later drawn at the hospital to determine his blood alcohol level. Those results are not yet known.

Brent was arrested by Irving PD and booked on a second degree felony charge at 4:14 AM and is being held without bail.

Brent pled guilty to a misdemeanor DUI charge while in college ... where he and Brown were teammates.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones released a statement today, saying, "We are deeply saddened by the news of this accident and the passing of Jerry Brown. At this time, our hearts and prayers and deepest sympathies are with the members of Jerry’s family and all of those who knew him and loved him."

The incident comes just one week after Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher killed his girlfriend and then himself.

RIP Mr. Brown. The guys just went out for a good time, and tragedy ensues.

For the rest of their lives, Mr. Brown's friends and family will equate Christmas with tragedy.

For the rest of his life, Mr Brent will live tortured with guilt and horror that he killed his friend.

As a recovered alcoholic myself, I can only pray with all my heart that people will come to understand that alcohol is a DANGEROUS DRUG
and treat it as such.

it's not about a lady in a red velvet dress dangling a martini in your face. Alcohol causes a tremendous amount of unnecessary tragedy.

Believe it or not, and hate me, but my heart goes out to Mr. Brent. He will suffer mightily for his grave error in judgement. His life is basically over too.

Hey, Bob Costas! You think maybe NFL players should stop drinking now? Or stop driving? Just dying to hear your expert professional opinion.

Its the alcohol culture that is destroying people these days. Bob Costas: Where are you? We need to re examine alcohol and the NFL and young people and the whole American alcohol culture in general. I say we should have an IMMEDIATE outright ban on all alcohol except 3% beer. No large "six or twelve pack cases" A high tax on each can sold and mandatory jail for any alcoholic using alcohol. Start by BANNING all alcohol ads from NFL games. I mean we don't advertise Smith and Wesson there, Why is alcohol allowed? Right Costas?? I expect you to explore this in detail in your next on air appearance. You are the poster boy for anti guns now you can do it for alcohol. The NFL is enabling horribl edeaths in the tens o fthousans annually from alcohol.Right Costas?

I guess tomorrow Bob Costas will be calling for a ban on cars and alcohol. Brent didn't learn his lesson in college. Sent him to the slammer. He can play football on the prison squad.

Its not a case of having "all that money" it a case of them thinking "that won't happen to ME" No one ever thinks that anything bad will happen to them. They think they are more likely to win the lottery.... twice, even though everyone knows that those stats are reversed. When you're rich (better yet, a celebrity) you think you're damn near invincible because you have "all that money" Yeah, its a stupid way of thinking, but we have all thought at one point or another that all the bad possibilities that could happen when doing anything even remotely risky wont happen to us. Those four kids on their way home from that UAlbany game most likely assumed that they were going to be able to drive home safely... instead, they were hit by a drunk driver, resulting in two in the hospital and two in caskets. If you think that the next time you get in a car, there's no possible way you're going to get hit on your way to work because its such a familiar, mundane route, then you're just as much of a "moron" because anything that can go wrong WILL go wrong.

Time to ban alcohol in this "alcohol culture," eh, Costas? Or perhaps a license to drink/buy alcohol with background checks and waiting periods. This means YOU Costas. Oh, and by the way, no armed security for you anymore, either.
