Adrian Peterson

I Won't Let My Son Play Football

2/23/2013 7:00 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Minnesota Vikings
star Adrian Peterson -- aka Purple Jesus ... aka one of the greatest running backs of all time -- says he'll NEVER LET HIS SON PLAY FOOTBALL!!!

Peterson was out in Houston last week for All-Star Weekend -- carrying his young son -- when he said, "This is Adrian Jr. He won't be playing football."

There are a million possible reasons for why a dad wouldn't let his son play football -- but coming from one of the greatest NFL players ever, it's pretty shocking.

The likely explanation ... the game of football has recently come under intense scrutiny for its long-term health risks -- following the high-profile suicides of several NFL stars, including Junior Seau.

The deaths have been attributed to a brain disease stemming from injuries the players sustained during their careers.

Even President Obama has commented on the health concerns -- saying if he had a son, he would have to think about whether he would let him play football.

Granted, it's not like Adrian's kid will ever need pro football money ... but we still gotta ask ...

The safety measures and equipment have changed so much even in the last five years. They still continue to try and make the game safer to play.

Both of my young sons play, and we buy them the best equipment we can. Neither of have had injuries or concussions playing the game (knock on wood). Oddly enough, one of my son's got his only concussion by getting hit in the head with a baseball during practice. They play both sports, and I feel safer with them in pads and helmets playing on the football field than vulnerable to baseballs on the baseball field.

Push him towards baseball or basketball if he's athletic. Same money, less physical sacrifice.

Pro Athletes can't win when it comes to this subject. If they say that their offspring will play that sport, they get accused of pushing the child and grooming them in that direction unfairly. If they say that the child won't play that sport, they STILL get criticized.

Life is a constant risk from one breath to the next.We can't really live packaged in foam and helmets thinking we are safe from harm.Half of these guys would be flippin burgers or hard time if it wasn't for the sport of football.Cry for their rich asses "not".You are not forced to play until your brain turns to tomato soup you choose to so bitter with the sweet or just walk away sympathy is not what football needs. Its gonna get over incorporated and our mothers are gonna enjoy it more than the spectators that watch and to some of us that have played it.Commercials and big salaries are not football. Its a reason I stopped watching NBA games in the 90s.The NFL is emulating that model.Boxing is being overtaken by MMA for the obvious football isn't for the softness of game play something else crybaby

His son's better off focusing on his studies. Better long term prospects.

Maybe he should set aside some of his millions for his son. So why dont you quit playing now and give up all of your millions. Attention getter.
