Conan O'Brien

Scores $32.5 Mil

from NBC

1/19/2010 12:45 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Conan O'Brien, The Tonight ShowConan O'Brien is losing "The Tonight Show" but he'll be getting a $32.5 million consolation prize courtesy of NBC ... sources tell TMZ.

In return, we've learned Conan has agreed to sit on the bench until September. Translation -- he can't host another show until the fall.

In addition to the $32.5 mil, we've learned NBC is also paying severance to Conan's "Tonight Show" employees. In all, we're told NBC's payout is around $40 million.

But Conan probably won't see close to the $32.5 mil. Under the deal, any money Conan makes during the remaining contract period with NBC will offset the network's obligation. So, if Fox were to make a deal with Conan and pay him $25 mil during the NBC contract period, Conan would only score $7.5 mil from NBC.

One well-placed NBC source told us something surprising -- looks like NBC may keep its intellectual property rights. So Conan can't take his creations -- such as Triumph the Insult Comic Dog and the Masturbating Bear -- to his next gig.

We're told the Conan/NBC deal still isn't completely done, but it's very close.

Jeff Zucker is on Charlie Rose on PBS. Conan should go to cable like Comedy Central he would be perfect for his toilet hummer.

Hahahahahahahaha....

Conan got butt raped. He loses his Int Prop rights, gets next to no money from NBC (assuming he picks up somewhere else) and he can't go on air until September and has to keep quiet and not bash NBC.

LMFAO!

Conan got owned. Serves you right you vapid, un-funny, red headed twit.

NBC...keeping Triumph?? That's BS! Conan needs to fight for his creations. Triumph is hilarious! The masturbating bear is kinda gross...so he should let NBC keep that ;). But Triumph!! He needs to fight for his intellectual property. No way NBC should continue making money off of him after he's gone. That's just wrong.

Good for Conan to make sure that his staff got paid as well. Yes he's making out, but if he gets another show in September, he'll most likely take the same staff with him so they will still have jobs.

I hate Leno. I like Conan and Letterman. Letterman is having a ball with making fun of Jay. And the best part is that he is real about it. He'll admit, he's having fun. He's Jay voice is FUNNY!

Conan is a money magnet. I am not surprised he gets confidential advice from gulfspecific.

It is soo clear to me now why Conan is leaving the Tonight Show. I have been watching the show for about two weeks now and he is using the exact same jokes!!!!! He is not funny at all. I used to watch the show when Jay was there and he did make me laugh. Cannot say the same thing about Conan. At first I felt bad for Conan, now I am glad he is leaving.

So, why WOULDN'T Conan offer his services for, say, $1/year to his next employer for the duration of his NBC contract period? It seems to me that (a) it makes the economics of starting a Conan Tonight on Fox in September much more doable, and (b) how sweet would it be to know that NBC is supporting Conan while he's working for a competitor?

So let's see. NBC is paying out a total of $40 million. $32.5 million goes to O'Brien. Then $7.5 million is left for severance pay for 200 jobless employees.

$7.5 million/200 = $37,500 per employee.

You can bet that people like the producers, writers, band will get a lot more than $37,500 and the line people will get significantly less.

200 people out of work because Conan refused to start the show at 12:05. Nice.

Sounds to me like Conan got screw, once again, over that deal... especially if he cannot take Triumph with him.

He couldn't sign a contract for $1. He has a legal responsibility to try to mitigate his damages.

No Harvey already discussed that and it's not legal to do that. I think the term is "bad faith".
