James Holmes STRANGE BEHAVIOR In Colorado Court

"Dark Knight" shooter James Holmes appeared in court moments ago ... sporting red-orange hair ... a red jumpsuit ... and a very bizarre demeanor.

Holmes was informed he will be charged with FIRST DEGREE MURDER for killing 12 people in a Colorado movie theater on Friday. The formal charges are expected to be filed soon.

Holmes appeared sedated in court -- constantly opening his eyes widely ... and then appearing to doze off while the judge was speaking.

At one point, he began to blink wildly.

Holmes did not say a word during the hearing.

The judge informed Holmes that he will be kept in custody on a no-bail hold due to the egregious nature of the crimes he's been accused of committing.

Holmes has been forbidden from contacting any of the victims or their families.

Arapahoe County District Attorney Carol Chambers addressed the media outside of the courthouse ... and said prosecutors have NOT decided if they will pursue the death penalty.

Prosecutors also said they do not know if Holmes was on any kind of medication during the hearing.

Prosecutors believe Holmes' trial won't start until a year from now.

James Holmes Facing EVICTION Prior to 'Batman' Massacre

James Holmes was just days from possibly being kicked out of his Colorado apartment when he opened fire in a crowded movie theater and killed 12 people ... this according to his neighbors.

Two residents of Holmes' apartment building tell TMZ ... in order to live in the complex you MUST be enrolled in the university. As soon as your student status is axed, you only have 30 days to move out.

We're told the building takes this rule very seriously and checks residents' active status every single month like clockwork. Holmes was a University of Colorado student at one time, but school officials say he dropped out some time in June.

That means Holmes was just about at the end of his 30-day grace period to move out of his apartment when he took an arsenal of weapons to a local theater and opened fire.

We reached out to the building's management company and landlord multiple times for comment, but haven't heard back.

James Holmes Summer Camp Photos

TMZ has obtained two photos of James Holmes from his time as a camp counselor at Camp Max Straus, which is run by Jewish Big Brothers Big Sisters of Los Angeles.

A counselor who worked with James the summer of 2008 tells TMZ ... he seemed like everyone else and hung out with the other counselors. He described James by saying you "wouldn't be able to tell he was a killer," adding, "He was cool. I never would have thought he could kill anybody. He never was anything but nice."

Randy Schwab, chief executive of Jewish Big Brothers Big Sisters of Los Angeles and director of Camp Max Straus, told the LA Times that James was responsible for “the care and guidance of a group of approximately 10 children" and added, "He was a counselor that had no incidents or disciplinary concerns. That summer provided the kids a wonderful camp experience without incident."

'Batman' Massacre You Be the Judge

The Colorado massacre and James Holmes raise fundamental questions about movie violence, guns and public safety. So we gotta ask ...

James Holmes Denied Gun Range Membership 3 Weeks Ago

James Holmes applied for a membership at a gun range in Colorado last month but never became a member because the range's owner was spooked by his voicemail message.

Holmes emailed an application to join the Lead Valley Range in Byers on June 25, the range's owner, Glenn Rotkovich, told Fox News.

But when Rotkovich called him back, he says Holmes' voicemail was "incoherent, just bizarre, really bizarre -- slurring words, but he didn’t sound drunk, just strange -- I could make out 'James' somewhere in it."

Rotkovich says he told the staff that if Holmes were to show up at the range, that the staff should get him immediately. He says he always likes to meet applicants before accepting them, and Holmes' application was particularly devoid of personal information.

On Holmes' application, he checked off boxes saying he was not prohibited by law from possessing firearms or ammunition; had not been convicted of any domestic violence offense and was not facing pending felony criminal charges or domestic offenses.

'Dark Knight Rises' Set to Rake in $160 MILLION

"Dark Knight Rises" is on track to pull in north of $160 million for the 3-day opening, despite the tragedy surrounding the flick ... this according to reports.

The major Hollywood studios aren't reporting official box office numbers yet out of respect for those affected by the massacre in Aurora on Friday ... but The Hollywood Reporter is estimating the film will take in a solid $160 million.

Prior to Friday's theater shooting, the film was estimated to pull in around $170 million, according to THR.

Despite the lower number, it will still make Christopher Nolan's third "Batman" installment the highest grossing 2D release of all time ... and will beat the opening of last year's "Dark Knight", which capped out at a $158.4 million in its first weekend.

"The Avengers" still takes the crown for best opening ever ... raking in $207.4 million.

Official numbers will be posted Monday AM.

James Holmes The Match.Com Profile

James Holmes is boyfriend material -- that's the shocker a Match.com member says she got when she logged on Friday afternoon to see the site suggesting she hook up with the man accused of killing 12 people in the Colorado movie massacre.

Diana (who asked us not to use her last name) tells TMZ she was floored when she saw Holmes' profile among her matches -- less than a day after the shootings -- saying it was "pretty scary getting matched to a mass murderer."

Diana says the profile said James hadn't visited the site in the last 24 hours, so it clearly had been created before the shootings. The profile also has the same tagline from James' adultfinder.com profile -- "Will you visit me in prison?"

Diana says she informed Match.com of the profile and they said they'd take it down, which Diana says they did minutes later. She took a few screen shots before it was deleted.

Holmes' profile included:

-- Favorite movies: "Too many good movies to have a favorite, maybe Dumb and Dumber, Hachiko, Star Wars, etc."
-- Favorite book: Where's Waldo?
-- "You should message me if you're interested, obviously. Or lookin' for sexy times. Very nice!"
-- Political views: Middle of the road
-- Faith: Agnostic

James Holmes Sex Website Says Profile Is Legit

A profile on a popular sex website appearing to be that of Colorado shooting suspect James Holmes is authentic ... so say sources connected to the website.

As TMZ first reported, the profile appeared on the website adultfriendfinder.com just days before the "Dark Knight Rises" massacre. The profile included a cryptic message on the top which reads, "Will you visit me in prison?"

Sources at the website tell TMZ they have confirmed it was created by Holmes. We're told they tracked the IP address back to Aurora, CO and the account info for the profile (such as the address and DOB) matched up with Holmes.

In the profile, Holmes described his penis as "short/average," said he was a "light/social drinker" and in the section where he's asked if he smokes or does drugs, he answered, "I'd prefer not to say."

Holmes created the profile on July 5 and last logged in to the site sometime in the past three days.

Law enforcement is currently looking at the profile to determine its authenticity and relevance, but website sources tell us ... they have not been contacted yet.
