Police in Sugar Land, Texas say Adrian Peterson fessed up to throwing back shots of a vodka mix at a poker game early Sunday morning ... just hours before he was arrested for DWI.
The officer who took Peterson into custody over the weekend wrote in court documents, obtained by TMZ Sports, that the former NFL running back made the admission while the two were at a Sugar Land gas station at around 9:23 AM.
The officer alleged in the docs he encountered Peterson asleep at the wheel of a running black Mercedes SUV that was next to some pumps ... and he claimed once he woke up the unconscious ex-Minnesota Vikings star, he reeked of booze and had blood shot, glossy eyes as well as a slurred speech.

2:18 PM PT -- Cam Skattebo took to social media Monday afternoon to thank fans for their support -- including a special shout-out to the city of Philadelphia.
"Surgery went well. I just want to thank the city of Philly for taking the best care of me. Every moment I spent in the hospital with family and friends I felt loved and supported in every way," Skattebo said. "Thank you to the doctors, surgeons, and staff that did their best work on me."
"This is just the beginning of my journey, and I can’t wait to show you guys all about it!!! GOD has a plan for me, stick the course and it will all work itself out, BRB #LFG."
Good news for Cam Skattebo -- the New York Giants rookie sensation is set to be released from the hospital on Monday, according to his dad, who tells TMZ Sports he's already on the road to recovery!
We spoke with Leo Skattebo Monday morning, just about 24 hours after Skatt suffered a gruesome ankle injury during the second quarter of the Giants vs. Eagles game at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia ... and he told us the plan was for his son to be discharged later today.
Given the serious nature of the injury -- a dislocated ankle that required emergency surgery -- it's an encouraging sign that Cam will get to leave the Philly hospital for his bed at home.
Justin Fields Reflects On Emotional Week ... 'I Was Crying On The Ground'
Justin Fields kept it honest with reporters after the Jets' first win of the season ... saying the past seven days have "been a lot for me" -- and at one point, he found himself crying on the ground in the closet.

TMZ Sports has obtained Adrian Peterson's mug shot stemming from his DWI arrest over the weekend ... and it's clear from the photo, the NFL legend was not thrilled to be behind bars.
Check it out ... Peterson, wearing a dark colored top, looked completely stoic in the snap and his eyes did appear to have a tinge of red to them. There, however, was not much else remarkable about the pic.
We broke the story ... Peterson was booked in a Fort Bend County, Texas jail on Sunday on one count of unlawful carrying of a weapon and one count of DWI.

Adrian Peterson has been arrested after allegedly driving while under the influence ... TMZ has learned.
According to online records, Peterson was arrested in Sugar Land, Texas around 10 AM local time Sunday. He was booked on one charge of DWI and one charge of unlawful carrying of a weapon.
This is Peterson's second DWI arrest this year after he was popped in Minnesota back in April shortly after the Vikings draft day party when a police officer claimed they saw him going 83 in a 55 MPH zone at just after 3 AM.

Former New York Jets star Nick Mangold has died after complications from kidney disease.
The team announced the news Sunday, less than two weeks after Mangold publicly revealed he was battling a rare genetic disorder and had been placed on kidney dialysis.
Jets owner Woody Johnson honored Mangold in a statement, calling him "the heartbeat of our offensive line for a decade" and a "beloved teammate whose leadership and toughness defined an era of Jets football."
Lincoln University Shooting 1 Dead, 6 Injured
A night of celebration turned tragic at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania when gunfire erupted during homecoming festivities, leaving one person dead and six others injured.
According to the Chester County District Attorney's Office, the shooting happened outside the school's International Cultural Center late Saturday after the homecoming football game.
One person was detained with a firearm, but no charges have been filed. Investigators are also looking into whether a second shooter may have been involved.

The NFL just handed down some hefty fines on the New York Giants, head coach Brian Daboll and rookie running back Cam Skattebo for violating the league's concussion protocol policy ... all for "creating the perception" they interfered with Jaxson Dart while he was being evaluated for a head injury.

A.J. McCarron I'm Launching A Bid For Office In Alabama!
It seems as if A.J. McCarron's still pretty open to the idea of calling big plays ... because he just launched his campaign for the position of Alabama's lieutenant governor.
The former quarterback officially announced he'd be tossing his hat -- or helmet -- into the ring for the position, which is up for grabs in 2027, in a video on his campaign's official YouTube account Thursday.
McCarron, running as a Republican, describes himself as an "outsider candidate" ... and claims he'll help push a conservative agenda in Alabama, where right-wing beliefs run deep.
