... Was About 'The Jets'

EXCLUSIVE

Joe Namath is so New York ... even the first Broadway show he ever saw was all about The Jets.

The NFL Hall of Famer was out in NYC this week and we had to ask ... with a nickname like "Broadway Joe" -- what was the first Broadway play he ever saw.

Namath gave the only answer you'd expect a NY Jets legend to give ... because when you're a Jet, you're a Jet all the way ... right?

He may be a huge NY Giants fan, but Rudy Giuliani has message for Jets Nation -- DON'T GIVE UP ON REX RYAN ... it's not his fault!!!

Rudy was out in L.A. last night -- and RAVED about his G-Men ... and even said he'd rather have Eli over Peyton if given the option!!

But when we started talking about Gang Green and their pathetic 1-6 record -- Rudy explained why Jets fans shouldn't blame Rex ... they should blame his players instead.

You listening, Geno?

Rex Ryan On Arrested WR:

Big Difference Between

Accused & Convicted

9/5/2014 7:04 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF
090314_rex_ryan_launchNY Jets coach Rex Ryan is saying the team is keeping a close eye on rookie WR Quincy Enunwa -- who was arrested for domestic violence Sunday -- but says there's a big difference between "accused" and "convicted."

TMZ Sports broke the story ... Enunwa was busted at a hotel in NJ, where he allegedly got violent with a woman during a heated argument. Enunwa plead not guilty to the domestic violence charge.

Coach Ryan addressed the issue during a media conference Thursday and said, "We are aware of it. This is something we take very seriously, obviously."

When asked if he would allow a player to remain on the team after he was convicted of domestic violence, Ryan said ... "There are different things. But, obviously there is a big difference between being charged, allegedly charged, and being convicted."

Ryan initially said the team knew about the arrest before they signed Enunwa to the practice squad this week -- but then backtracked and said:

"You know what, I said that before about the practice squad, I can’t really remember the timetable. I have been so focused on the Raiders. I am not going to get into the specifics of it. I don’t want to give you false information. Quite honestly I don’t remember if it was before the practice squad or not."

As for Enunwa, he's still on the practice squad ... and his domestic violence case is ongoing.

NY Jets Def. Coordinator

Accused of Slapping Woman

... at NJ Restaurant

NY Jets defensive coordinator Dennis Thurman is under investigation for allegedly SLAPPING a woman at a New Jersey restaurant earlier this week ... this according to a police report obtained by TMZ Sports ... and we obtained photos taken during the heated exchange.

A 28-year-old woman has filed a police report with the Morristown PD, claiming she was at the outdoor bar at Pazzo Pazzo restaurant on Wednesday afternoon when she encountered Thurman.

According to the report, 58-year-old Thurman began hitting on her and offering her drinks -- but she made it clear she was not interested.

At that point, the woman claims Thurman "showed an aggressive demeanor toward her" and then "out of nowhere, Thurman slapped her across the face."

0516-dennis-thurman-main-01The woman says she was shocked and blurted out, "You just hit me."

TMZ Sports obtained 2 photos taken during the encounter -- one of which shows the woman flipping Thurman off moments before the slap ... and another photo appears to show Thurman following through after the alleged slap.

After the alleged slap, the woman claims Thurman -- who played 8 years in the NFL as a defensive back -- threw his hands up in the air and left the area.

The woman claims she was not injured during the incident, but filed the report out of concern Thurman would strike other women in the future.

We reached out to the Jets -- so far, no comment.

Michael Vick

Jersey Number Could Be Huge Problem

In Negotiation with Jets

EXCLUSIVE

Michael Vick knows his price ... and it might be way too high for the NY Jets ... because he wants the jersey that belongs to the current starting QB -- and it's gonna be an issue during negotiations, TMZ Sports has learned.

Sources close to Vick tell us ... Mike is very serious about rocking #7 next season, no matter which team signs him.

Besides the fact he wore #7 in college and all throughout his pro career, Vick also has a clothing line called V7 -- and he's dead serious about sticking with his number.

Problem is ... Geno Smith currently wears #7 ... and he's supposed to be the QB of the future in NY.

Now we're told the jersey situation is not an absolute dealbreaker -- but it will be a "big issue" in negotiations.

In other words ... No number? More money.

Stay tuned ....

Mark Sanchez

I'm Ready for My Jets Comeback

... If Jets Want Me Back

3/16/2014 9:57 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF
EXCLUSIVE
031614_mark_sanchez_launchNY Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez says he's ready for battle -- telling TMZ Sports his shoulder feels great and he's focused on winning back his starting job ... if management keeps him around.

Sanchez was leaving a friend's birthday party at Katsuya in Hollywood this weekend when we asked him about the torn labrum in his throwing shoulder that ended his 2013 season.

"Shoulder feels great, already throwing and I'll be ready to go here soon," Sanchez says.

When asked how he would feel about leaving NYC to come play for a West Coast team, the former USC superstar smiled at the idea but says he's committed to NY ... at least for now.

"I do love the West Coast, but I'm a Jet for 2 more years at least on my contract," Mark said ... "I love being there. I love New York. I've had a ball there."

Sanchez says he felt like things were going great before the injury -- and believed he was solidifying his spot as the starter over Geno Smith -- but the injury screwed everything up.

As for his future, Sanchez seems to be realistic about the situation -- "I know management has some decisions to make in the next few days ... so we'll see what happens."

He adds, "Whatever happens, it'll be great."

Fatness often plagues NFL players after they retire -- but former lineman Alan Faneca tells TMZ Sports he's helping his old teammates win the battle against obesity .... just like he did.

Faneca -- who played 13 NFL seasons while weighing 320 lbs -- has dropped all the way to 213 lbs ... and ran a full marathon in UNDER 4 HOURS this past weekend.

0205-alan-faneca-getty-twitter
"There's no reason to be 320 and be walking around post-football," Faneca says ... noting that he made the decision to shed the weight after considering the long-term health issues that have plagued NFL big men in the past.

And now that he's successfully slimmed down, Alan says he's passing along his weight loss secrets to some of his old friends from the Steelers, Jets and Cardinals.

"I have had some buddies reach out that have had trouble and struggled," Alan said while appearing on the "TMZ Sports" TV show ... explaining, "If you dont make that transtiton kind of quick, all of the sudden that 320 turns into an ugly 350."

Faneca says he still gets cravings for chocolate chip cookies -- but says he's managed to ween himself off his most dangerous snack item ... a snack that contained 1,000 CALORIES.

Bart Scott

Richard Sherman Bit My Style

My Angry Rant Was Way Better!!

Richard Sherman's epic post-game rant DOESN'T HOLD A CANDLE to Bart Scott's legendary "Can't Wait" interview back in 2011 ... so says the former New York Jets linebacker himself.

Scott was hanging out with NY Giants kicker Steve Weatherford at Jay Glazer's Super Bowl party at Pranna in NYC ... when they told us why Scott is the undisputed post-game screaming champion.

If you remember, Scott WENT OFF after the Jets beat the Patriots in a crazy playoff game ... and Bart UNLEASHED, trashing his critics and the Patriots defense ... before capping it off with what became his catchphrase.

Seriously, Bart even trademarked the phrase "Can't Wait."

Your move, Sherman.

Adrian Peterson vs. Antonio Cromartie

WHO'D YOU RATHER?

10/17/2013 12:10 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF
1016_peterson_cromartie_ratherIt's a battle of the football baby-daddies!

Here's 28-year-old Adrian Peterson who's reportedly fathered five (or possibly 7) children to date (left) -- and 29-year-old Antonio Cromartie  who famously struggled to remember the names of his seven children on HBO's "Hard Knocks" show (right).

The question is...

Tim Tebow

DROPPED

Tebowing has a brand new meaning -- unemployed NFL star -- 'cause Tim Tebow has been dropped by the New England Patriots.

Tebow -- who signed a 2-year contract with the Patriots back in June -- was cut from the roster Saturday morning ... after failing to impress head coach Bill Belichick, according to ESPN.

The news comes just a little over 4 months after Tebow was fired from the New York Jets.

Since Tebow has been in the NFL less than 4 years, he could become a free agent and sign with another team ... begging the question, will another team even want him?

So we gotta ask...

Jets' Santonio Holmes

Back on Field After Injury!!

Santonio Holmes made a triumphant return to NY Jets practice after his devastating foot injury, and let's just say ... dude's got a way to go before he's game ready.

The Jets' star receiver (aka Mark Sanchez's best chance to keep his starting QB job) was practicing today at MetLife Stadium -- coming off a foot injury that benched him for almost all of last season.

In the vid, Santonio runs a pretty tight pass pattern -- but you gotta watch to see how the play ends.

Good luck Sanchez ... and Jets fans.

NY Jets Star Joe McKnight

Arrested In Jersey

8/6/2013 6:00 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF
breaking news
0806_joe_mcknight_gettyMore trouble for the New York Jets -- ANOTHER running back was arrested. This time, the perp is Joe McKnight who was busted in Jersey on outstanding warrants during a routine traffic stop.

McKnight -- who was drafted out of USC in 2010 -- was initially pulled over in Hanover Township on July 30 around 11am after cops noticed his 2010 Mercedes speeding and changing lanes without signaling.

But during the stop, the officer ran Joe's plates -- and noticed outstanding warrants for his arrest for (1) failing to pay a $200 fine because he didn't have proof of insurance during a previous incident and (2) failing to pay a $120 fine for a prior routine traffic violation.

According to the New York Post, 25-year-old McKnight was cuffed and hauled to a nearby station where he was booked and released after posting the $320 bail.

It hasn't been a great off-season for Jets running backs -- back in May, McKnight's teammate Mike Goodson was popped on Route 80 after cops say he was in possession of drugs and guns. He pled not guilty to those charges.

Mark Sanchez

Completes Actual Pass!

Fights to Keep His Job

7/24/2013 7:15 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF
EXCLUSIVE
072413_mark_sanchez_launch
NY Jets fans rejoice ... Mark Sanchez looks ready to toss TD passes again -- as long as the receiver is 6 feet away from him on a NYC street corner ... without any defenders chasing him.

Just 2 days before Jets training camp starts, we spotted Sanchise cruising down a midtown sidewalk, pigskin in hand -- and then it happened.

Mark quickly spotted his open man (the driver of his limo), and hit him ... right in the hands! It's the kind of thing we did NOT see last season when Sanchez put up his 2nd worst career numbers for completing passes.

Now, if Sanchez can just repeat this with real NFL players ... he might be able to avoid a huge QB controversy.

The Jets drafted Geno Smith -- a college superstar -- who's expected to challenge Sanchez for the starting job.

Your move, rook.
