The death of Buffalo Bills star Ed Oliver's 2-year-old son has been ruled accidental ... and the investigation is now closed with no criminal charges, TMZ has learned.
The Harris County Sheriff's Office tells TMZ ... its Homicide Division has closed the case and no charges will be filed against Ed or anyone else.
As we previously reported ... Ed's son, also named Ed, drowned in the swimming pool at the NFL star's Texas home on June 28. Deputies responded to a life-in-danger call after the boy's parents found him unresponsive in the pool.
The toddler was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Ed was seen speaking with law enforcement outside the home before breaking down in tears.
News of the tragedy didn't become public until nearly two months later ... and the way it came out drew a strong reaction from Ed's Bills teammate, star quarterback Josh Allen.
Josh said he was "sad and angry" that a podcaster revealed the death before Ed and his family were ready to share it themselves ... while thanking those who knew and kept it private.
Now, authorities have officially closed the case ... determining the toddler's death was a tragic accident.
