Stephen Gostkowski is sure patience with Bill Belichick at UNC will be rewarded ... telling TMZ Sports this week if the Tar Heels give him time, the head coach "will figure it out."

The former Patriots star -- who played under Belichick for 14 seasons in New England -- called the 73-year-old "the best coach" ... while making it clear he has no concerns about The Hoodie's ability to win, despite a slow start in Chapel Hill.

"I can't really say too much bad about him," the ex-All-Pro kicker said. "I enjoyed working with him every minute of the day. I used to be scared to death of him. Maybe not so much anymore. But I'm pulling for him."

"They're figuring out the best plan of attack to be able to attack this, heal it and fix it and allow him to get back to better health," Vrabel said.

New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel is at it again -- the ex-NFL linebacker jumped into the middle of yet another scuffle during the team's joint practice with the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday ... and ended up at the bottom of a pile in the process!!

The chaos unfolded during the second workout between the two squads. While it's unclear what exactly led to tensions boiling over ... Vrabel -- who played for the Patriots for eight years -- quickly jumped in to try and end it.

If you look closely, you can see the 50-year-old on the ground and getting pushed around as he tried to restore order. Eventually, the two sides were separated, and Vrabel was able to get back to his feet. All things considered, he appeared just fine.

The incident went down on the training fields behind Gillette Stadium, where Williams -- who was hired in January -- suddenly went to the ground, according to reporters on the scene.

Several spectators shared photos on social media showing Coach Williams on the grass as medical personnel provided aid and rolled out a stretcher.
