New Yorkers usually take out their trash, but one basketball fan took the receptacle instead ... making off with a Knicks-themed trash can during the recent championship parade.

New video's going viral online showing a fan of the NBA's newly minted champs stopping by a blue and orange trash can on a city street in NYC.

It ain't bolted down ... so she flips it over and dumps out all the refuse before walking away with her basketball-based bounty.

The family of the doodle Jameson, who was shot to death by an LAPD officer last Saturday, has torn the "reckless" officer apart after bodycam footage showed them shooting the pup multiple times ... even after he was down.

Jameson's owners, Marie Marseille and Jeremiah Garcia, called the incident "unnecessary and profoundly dangerous" via their attorney, Brett Greenfield ... and questioned the judgement of the officer in a statement to TMZ.

They slammed ... "Throughout the encounter, the officer repeatedly used profanity, focused on the dog’s size, and displayed an aggressive attitude during what was supposed to be a welfare check."

The New York Knicks have their NBA Championship ... and now stars Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart also have an apology from Stephen A. Smith, who showered them with hate during their early careers.

Here's the sitch -- Knicks stars and longtime pals Jalen and Josh held a live taping of their "The Roommates Show" podcast at the Infosys Theater at NYC's Madison Square Garden along with co-host Matt Hillman on Friday. They invited SAS onto the stage as one of their many surprise guests ... and he was greeted by roaring boos from the crowd.

It's no surprise -- Stephen infamously doubted the talent of Brunson and several NBA futures while they were playing collegiate basketball ... and continued when they were drafted.

Jalen Brunson wants a guest gig on "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" ... and one of the show's biggest stars is "absolutely" on board with the idea.

TMZ Sports caught up with Detective Elliot Stabler himself -- Christopher Meloni -- out in NYC fresh off the Knicks' championship win this week ... and had to ask about the Finals MVP wanting to show off his acting chops.

Meloni gets it -- after bringing the Larry O'Brien trophy back to the Big Apple after a 53-year drought, Brunson can essentially do whatever he wants as King of New York ... and that includes making his way in front of the SVU cams.

The "peace deal" has been signed, but it's debatable whether we got the upper hand. And boy, did Janice Dickinson start a plastic surgery war with Kris Jenner! So we gotta ask ...

7:11 PM PT -- Mayor Karen Bass released the following statement after the footage dropped ... “What I saw on the bodycam footage is disturbing and tragic. The Chief and I agreed that it was important to release the bodycam footage swiftly. While the investigation is ongoing, I am very concerned about why shots were fired and Jameson was killed. This shooting makes clear that while LAPD provides officers with written guidance on the use of force and pets, this is not enough."

She added ... “I have directed the Police Commission President and the Chief to examine the Department's Use of Force policy on Dog Encounters to determine best practices from around the country, and use this opportunity to update the LAPD's overall tactics, policies, and training related to the use of lethal force to increase safety for everyone – officers, Angelenos and their pets.”

An officer fired not once, but four times, in the controversial fatal shooting of the Canoga Park dog, Jameson, on Saturday.

The LAPD just released the bodycam footage from the officer who killed Marie Marseille's golden retriever, Saint Bernard, and poodle mix ... and it's difficult to watch.

When officers first approach Marie's apartment, she cracks the door ... and Jameson pokes his head out and barks.

The dog's family tells TMZ his owner, Marie Marseille, has hired an attorney as an investigation is underway over the shocking shooting of the beloved 2-year-old poodle mix named Jameson on Saturday ... and she's ready to put up a fight against the LAPD so Jameson gets justice.

The attorney, Brett Greenfield, tells TMZ ... "If the LAPD does not address this appropriately relating to the officer and my client, I will be filing a lawsuit. We play to win, it's just that simple. We are not happy about this."

French Montana is putting his money where his mouth is ... he says he cut a $75,000 check to the New York cab driver whose taxi was destroyed during the Knicks title celebration.

Appearing on "CBS Mornings" Thursday, French revealed he gave 59-year-old Algerian immigrant Noureddine Bitat the money to help cover at least six months worth of living expenses while he gets back on his feet.

French said Noureddine was so shaken by the ordeal that he doesn't even want to drive a taxi anymore, so he's hoping the financial support gives him time to figure out his next move.
