Lauren Scruggs -- the model who suffered gruesome injuries in a plane propeller accident last year -- celebrated her 24th birthday and showed off her new prosthetic arm in Texas on Wednesday.

Last December, Scruggs lost her left hand and left eye after accidentally walking into an airplane propeller. She has been undergoing extensive rehab and a few months ago settled with the airplane insurance company for an undisclosed amount.

Katie Holmes was tight-lipped on the streets of New York this AM ... sans Suri.

As her 6-year-old daughter took a chopper ride with her 50-year-old estranged husband ... Katie went to SoulCycle for a little spinning.

Katie spins a lot ... at least that's what Tom's people say.

Big mistake, Kate Hudson ... HUGE -- the actress got sucked into a paparazzi vortex all because she unwittingly decided to walk by the NYC hotel where Tom Cruise is staying.

We just posted the video of Tom and Suri Cruise leaving the Greenwich Hotel ... surrounded by eager fans and paps -- but earlier in the day it was all lenses on Kate.

It's pretty clear from the photo ... Kate quickly realized her misstep and did her best to get outta Dodge.

10:45 AM PST: We're told Tom is taking Suri to Chelsea Piers later today for her gymnastics lesson. As for how Tom picked Suri up ... we're told he went to Katie's apartment, but he never saw his soon-to-be ex-wife. He was inside the apartment for less than 5 minutes.

Tom Cruise has reunited with his daughter for the first time since Katie Holmes filed for divorce last month.

Tom wrapped his latest movie shoot and flew to New York City, where we're told he'll be spending several days with his 6-year-old daughter. This pic (above) shows Tom carrying Suri into The Greenwich Hotel.

Sources tell TMZ ... Tom will have no contact with Katie. Suri will be picked up and taken back with the help of intermediaries.

The picture (below) shows Tom's sister, Cass, bearing gifts as she enters the hotel.

Brees was rollin' through New Orleans yesterday when he decided to fill up his SUV ... and whipped out his cell phone at the same time ... a cardinal sin at most gas stations because some people believe the static electricity from the phone can ignite gas vapors and cause an explosion!!

But before you freak out about Brees ... don't ... because according to the FCC, the cell phone thing is completely unsubstantiated.

The FCC website states, "Scientific testing has not established a dangerous link between wireless phones and fuel vapors."

"The wireless industry has done studies on the potential for wireless phones to create sparks that could possibly ignite flammable materials. The studies generally conclude that while it may be theoretically possible for a spark from a cell phone battery to ignite gas vapor under very precise conditions, there is no documented incident where the use of a wireless phone was found to cause a fire or explosion at a gas station."

Katie Holmes and Suri Cruise got trashed last night -- their Mercedes-Benz limousine was sideswiped by a giant garbage truck in New York City.

Cops say Tom Cruise's daughter and soon-to-be-ex-wife were not hurt when the truck scraped the left rear fender of their Mercedes. We're told Katie and Suri's driver was the only other person in the car.

The accident happened on 33rd Street -- not far from Chelsea Piers ... where Katie had just picked up Suri from a gymnastics lesson.
