Take a look ... wild video from the Wall Street district shows thick black smoke pouring into the sky as the car -- which appeared to be affiliated with the MTA -- sat engulfed in flames near Broadway and Stone Street.

Onlookers gathered around the chaotic scene -- many pulling out their phones to record as the fire intensified before FDNY crews arrived.

Karen Read's infamous SUV -- the one she was accused of using to kill her Boston cop boyfriend -- didn't even make it to bidding ... 'cause someone swooped in with an offer before the auction could officially kick off.

The Lexus was set to go up for auction at Manzi Appraisers in Woburn, Mass. ... where bidders had to prove they had at least $20K in the bank just to register.

A few people showed up ready to throw their hats in the ring -- including two spotted holding bidding signs -- but the whole thing was abruptly halted after an outside group made an offer behind the scenes.

The man who pulled a car with his penis is explaining why he went with the fiery hat on a hat for his recent stunt ... revealing he's not the first person to use his Johnson to jerk a car.

John Stephenson stopped by "TMZ Live" to talk about his recent dong-defying feat -- he pulled a car weighing two tonnes 131 feet using only his member ... and, he explained he wanted to do a truly original stunt to raise awareness about prostate cancer.

The Brit explains he -- like us -- figured pulling the car would be enough ... but, it turns out another dude's already whipped it out and yanked a whip down the street, so he needed another layer.

Stephenson immediately jumped to the idea of flames -- a pretty extreme measure -- to add his own flair to the situation ... and, the stunt will now live on forever in the One-Eyed Wonder Hall of Fame (patent pending).

Now, don’t go calling it a full-blown romantic reunion just yet -- there was no PDA -- but they also weren’t at each other’s throats ... which is quite the shift, considering a judge recently ordered Bonnie to stop threatening Jesse or risk jail time.

Check the clip ... a white pickup truck pulls into the "Selling Sunset" boss' West Hollywood office parking lot on March 16, stopping just behind his $500K Rolls-Royce, before the driver hops out and casually walks up to the luxury vehicle.

Next thing you know -- the Rolls is seen pulling out onto the street ... with the truck trailing a few cars behind ... pretty strong sign this wasn't a solo job.

Jason Oppenheim says he's not sold on driving another Rolls-Royce down Sunset ... he's considering something more low-key after his last one was stolen.

We caught up with the reality star and real estate mogul outside the Selling Sunset office on Friday ... and we had to ask for an update on the theft which took place last month in the business' lot.

Oppenheim says the cops haven't made a ton of progress yet ... but they're on the case -- and he hopes to get the car back eventually.
