Nick Reiner is spending his days in an L.A. jail, dealing with the aftermath of the violent murders of his parents, and he's not been able to fully process it ... TMZ has learned.

A source with direct knowledge tells TMZ ... Nick is not reeling in grief. Rather, he's "in a fog"  ... in no small part due to his medical condition and the meds he's taking.

Our source goes on to characterize Nick as "calm," "cognizant," and "dazed" -- adding Nick isn't even close to processing what happened.

TMZ broke the story ... Nick had been diagnosed with schizophrenia. In the weeks leading up to the murders, we're told he was out of control. Our sources characterized Nick as "erratic" and "dangerous." As we reported, he was recently treated at an L.A.-based rehab facility that specializes in mental health and substance abuse and was under the care of a psychiatrist.

For Mathews, Nick presented a treatment provider's worst nightmare ... he was diagnosed with schizophrenia, but had been in and out of rehab for years and struggled with substance abuse.

Former NFL player Myles Jack was arrested after a bizarre incident at a home in Texas on Tuesday ... when cops say the linebacker broke out of a second-story window and fell to the ground before being taken into custody.

According to the Frisco Police Department, officers responded to a welfare concern around 5:40 AM ... and when they got to the scene, gunshots were heard inside the residence.

Officers established a perimeter and evacuated other homes in the area ... and said at one point in the incident, they observed a man later identified as 30-year-old Jack break a window, climb out, and plummet to the ground.

Brown University Shooter Used Untraceable Phones, Switched License Plates

Claudio Manuel Neves Valente -- the man accused of shooting up Brown University Saturday and then gunning down MIT professor Nuno F.G. Loureiro at his home Monday --used "sophisticated" tactics to hide his tracks as he attempted to conceal his horrifying actions.

U.S. Attorney for the District of Massachusetts Leah Foley laid it all out in a press conference Thursday night, revealing Neves Valente likely used an untraceable phone and avoided using credit cards tied to his name. He is also said to have switched the Florida license plates of his rental Nissan to unregistered license plates from Maine within 24 hours of the Brown shooting, and before he killed Loureiro.

As for his connection to the MIT nuclear physicist, prosecutors say the pair attended the same academic program in Portugal between 1995 and 2000. Loureiro was found shot at his Brookline, Massachusetts home Monday and died Tuesday. The specific motive for murdering Loureiro remains unclear.

New footage shows Nick Reiner walking around in Santa Monica hours before his parents' dead bodies were discovered in their Brentwood home ... and he's heading toward the hotel he checked into.

TMZ obtained surveillance video from a local business on Santa Monica Pier. You see Nick walking down the sidewalk, towards the Pierside Santa Monica hotel.

The video was shot around 4 AM Sunday ... and Nick looks like he's carrying a black backpack and wearing a hat ... just like the video we obtained of him at a Brentwood gas station earlier in the evening.

We don’t know if this video of Nick was shot before or after he allegedly murdered his parents.

What we do know is that he checked into the hotel approximately 6 minutes after he's seen in this footage. Sources with direct knowledge told us no one saw any blood on Nick when he arrived at the hotel at 4:15 AM.

Brown University Campus Shooting Suspect Found Dead From Self-Inflicted Gunshot Wound

7:30 PM PST -- The deceased suspect in last weekend's mass shooting at Brown University has been identified as Claudio Manuel Neves Valente, a 48-year-old former Brown graduate student and immigrant from Portugal. He arrived in the United States in August 2000 as an F-1 student at Brown University and was enrolled in a doctoral program, according to authorities. However, he at some point withdrew from the university for an undisclosed reason. He obtained U.S. lawful permanent residency in April 2017.

The suspected gunman in the Brown University shooting was found dead in New Hampshire on Thursday night, federal law enforcement sources confirm to TMZ.

According to our law enforcement sources, the unidentified suspect was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound at a storage facility in Salem.

Investigators think there could be a link between the campus mass shooting at Brown University and the MIT professor who was later killed at his home -- and law enforcement is now digging into a possible connection, TMZ has learned.

A federal law enforcement source tells TMZ … federal, state and local authorities are now looking into whether the fields of physics and engineering are a factor in the murders linking the two cases. No suspects have been identified or apprehended in either case.

This is a major shift in the investigation -- especially since FBI Boston Special Agent in Charge Ted Docks said Tuesday there didn’t appear to be any connection between the two shootings.

Nick Reiner did NOT get booted from his parents' house the night before Rob and Michele Reiner were murdered in the Brentwood home where they lived with their son ... TMZ has learned.

There has been speculation online Rob kicked Nick out of the house Saturday night after returning from Conan O'Brien's Christmas party.

A source with direct knowledge tells TMZ, Nick left on his own accord. We do not know the circumstances under which Nick decided to leave. TMZ broke the story he and Rob got into a heated argument at Conan's party ... but it’s unclear if the exchange continued back at the Reiner residence.

Our sources confirm … Nick was not mentally sound in the period of time leading up to the murders. A source with direct knowledge tells TMZ … Nick's mental instability went beyond consuming illegal substances. We're told prescription drugs "messed with his head."

Natalee Holloway's Killer Tries to End His Life in His Prison Cell

Joran van der Sloot -- the man who confessed to killing Natalee Holloway after her 2005 disappearance -- reportedly tried to commit suicide in prison Saturday.

According to Peruvian news outlet La Republica ... Joran -- who is incarcerated at the maximum security Challapalca Prison -- was found hanging from a strip of blanket in his cell while guards were distributing breakfast.

The 38-year-old Dutch national was reportedly taken to the infirmary, where he was nursed back to stable condition.

According to the outlet, officials said the manner in which guards found Joran "suggested a possible suicide attempt."

The brother of Los Angeles Rams star Puka Nacua was arrested in West Hollywood over the weekend ... after he and another man allegedly took a BMW SUV from Lakers player Adou Thiero without permission.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department confirmed to us on Thursday that Samson Nacua, 27, and Trey Rose, 27, were placed into custody for Taking a Vehicle Without the Owner's Consent.

"Deputies were flagged down in the 8400 block of Sunset Boulevard, West Hollywood, and contacted the victim who stated his newer model BMW was stolen, and he was able to track it to that location," cops said.

"2 Fast 2 Furious" star Devon Aoki is dealing with a major car issue ... but it has nothing directly to do with her or her famous movie.

Here's the deal ... Aoki's husband, James Bailey, was reportedly driving an Audi SQ7 SUV in Coral Gables, Florida Monday around 5:15 PM when he allegedly plowed into a man riding a stand-up scooter, according to an arrest report obtained by TMZ.

The report says the scooter rider was in a crosswalk when he was struck, and Bailey drove away, heading back to his home. WPLG Local 10 obtained video showing the aftermath of the hit-and-run, with the victim pleading with the driver to move the Audi off his foot before falling to the ground in pain.
