The Mississppi Highway Patrol has identified Freeman's passenger as Demaris Meyer. Freeman was driving Meyer's 1997 Nissan Maxima eastbound on Highway 32 when he ran off the edge of the road, flipping the car. We're told both were wearing seat belts at the time.

And get this -- an editor for a local Mississippi newspaper tells the AP when one looky-loo whipped out a cell phone at the scene of Morgan Freeman's accident and tried to snap a pic of the actor, Freeman joked, "no freebies, no freebies." Everyone's a journalist these days!

Cops say Freeman was coherent and talking to police and paramedics.

Morgan Freeman may have fallen asleep at the wheel last night right before his bad car wreck.

The actor was driving on Highway 32 in Tallahatchie County when he apparently lost control, flipping his car several times.

WHBQ in Memphis is reporting Freeman was on his way home to Charleston when the smash-up happened. Bill Luckett, Freeman's friend and co-owner of Freeman's restaurant Madidi, said his buddy was sitting up and talking at the hospital.

A spokesperson at the Regional Medical Center in Memphis told us Morgan Freeman's condition is "serious" after he was injured in a car accident last night.

The 71-year-old was in a one car accident around 11:30 PM outside of Ruleville, Miss. and had to be airlifted to the hospital in Memphis.

The condition of an unidentified woman in the car with the actor is still not known.

TMZ has learned that Academy Award winning actor Morgan Freeman, 71, has been injured in a serious car accident in Mississippi.

Cops tell us the "Dark Knight" star was in a one car accident around 11:30 PM last night north of the small town of Ruleville. He was airlifted from the accident scene to a hospital in Memphis, Tenn. We're told alcohol is not suspected as a factor in the wreck, news of which was first reported by MediaTakeout.

Freeman's condition is unknown, but state troopers tell us he was talking at the scene before he was taken to the hospital. The condition of an unidentified female passenger in the car also is unknown.

Nikki Blonsky's mom pops up midway through the video -- shot at the Providenciales airport -- to say that Nikki was "just sitting there" when she was "punched in the head."

You can also hear another witness say "Tracy Turnblad" won't be "dancing around today" after the lady in the green shirt initiated the fight that sent Bianca's mom to the hospital and Nikki, Bianca, and Nikki's dad to jail.

Sources who were attending a Malibu beach party tell TMZ Chudney was pulling out of a parking lot across the street when her Land Rover was hit by an oncoming car.

We're told Chudney and a passenger were taken to the hospital for precautionary measures, and the two passengers in the other vehicle complained to paramedics of neck and back injuries. All have been transported to a nearby hospital. Tracee Ross, Chudney's sister, was spotted by TMZ cameras arriving to the hospital.

Right wing bad driver Robert Novak has been diagnosed with a brain tumor. Does that affect your motor skills?

Novak, who was involved in a hit and run with a pedestrian last week in D.C., issued a statement saying "On Sunday, July 27, I was diagnosed with a brain tumor. I have been admitted to Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, where doctors will soon begin appropriate treatment. I will be suspending my journalistic work for an indefinite but, God willing, not too lengthy period."

The Chicago Sun-Times reports Novak was with his family yesterday on Cape Cod when he suddenly became ill. He was brought by ambulance to the hospital in Boston. Doctors have not yet performed a biopsy on the tumor.

His assistant told the paper "He's talking'' and "seemed fine."
