Marvel Comics Legend Gerry Conway Dead at 73

Marvel Comics writer and former Editor-in-Chief Gerry Conway -- who co-created "The Punisher" -- has died at age 73.

Marvel posted the news on Monday ... but it is not clear when Conway died, or how.

Dan Buckley, President of Marvel Comics and Franchise, said in a statement ... "Gerry Conway was a gifted writer. He was thoughtful, deeply attuned to the emotional and moral core of storytelling, and a wonderful and articulate advocate for comics and creators. His writing has inspired all of us at Marvel, and will continue to inspire generations of writers, readers and fans to come."

Of all the contributions he made to the stories of iconic Marvel characters ... he is best known for co-creating the anti-hero character The Punisher. Currently, Jon Bernthal plays the fan-favorite character both on the Marvel TV series and in the upcoming movie "Spider-Man: Brand New Day."

The legendary writer is survived by his wife, Laura Conway.

Marvel extended its deepest sympathies to Conway's family, friends, and fans around the world.

He was 73.

'Menace II Society' Actor Samuel Monroe Jr. Fighting For His Life in Hospital

Samuel Monroe Jr., best known for his work in the '90s classic film "Menace II Society," has been hospitalized ... and the situation is serious.

Family tells TMZ ... the actor is on life support in a SoCal hospital for the past three days -- and he's battling meningitis. As for the prognosis, we're told it's unclear, and the family is getting daily updates.

Samuel's mother posted about the situation on Facebook, saying in part ... "God don’t make no mistakes, but he is gracious, and I am humbly asking for his mercy and grace for Sam. I love you, son, to the moon and back 100 times."

Mariclare Costello 'The Waltons' Star Dead at 90

Mariclare Costello, best known for playing schoolteacher Rosemary Hunter on "The Waltons," has died at 90.

Her family says she passed away April 17 in Brooklyn, closing out a long and impressive career that also includes the 1971 cult horror flick "Let's Scare Jessica to Death," and starring opposite Martin Sheen in the ABC telefilm "The Execution of Private Slovik."

Mariclare was also a familiar face on Broadway in the '60s and '70s ... but TV fans knew her best as Rosemary on 15 episodes of "The Waltons," before she moved on to costar as the family matriarch in the CBS drama "The Fitzpatricks."

Katie Couric says the woman who has accused Matt Lauer of rape has shown a lot of courage in coming forward with her allegation.

The veteran journalist made the comment about her former colleague during a conversation with Page Six at City Harvest Presents The 2026 Gala: Shaken, Not Stirred earlier this week ... telling the outlet she's read an excerpt from Brooke Nevils' new book.

Couric said, "I feel terrible for her. I think she’s very brave to write the book.”

Sophia Hutchins' estate and Caitlyn Jenner are requesting access to the late manager's Apple account nearly a year after her shocking death.

The estate filed documents Friday requesting a judge grant an order authorizing their access to her Apple ID ... explaining the estate has fallen behind on its financial obligations and more because its inability to access the account has held up the process.

The estate -- led by Sophia's mom, Amy -- says it went to Apple after Sophia died, requesting access ... but Apple responded by asking for a court order.

TMZ has confirmed Helena's departure from the show, which just started filming about a week ago in France, and her role will be rewritten and recast.

In a statement, a rep for HBO tells TMZ ... "With filming just underway on season four of The White Lotus, it had become apparent that the character which Mike White created for Helena Bonham Carter did not align once on set."

"The role has subsequently been rethought, is being rewritten and will be recast in the coming weeks. HBO, the producers and Mike White are saddened that they won’t get to work with her, but remain ardent fans and very much hope to work with the legendary actress on another project soon."

"Baywatch" star David Charvet is adamant the dog he hit and killed with his truck was NOT on a leash ... and he says he shot video showing the dog owner walking her dogs off a leash hours after the incident.

TMZ obtained the video, and it shows David driving his truck down a residential street in Malibu ... as a woman and two dogs head towards him. The dogs are NOT on a leash.

David says it's Vera Errico walking her dogs ... she's the woman who alleges David was behind the wheel in a hit-and-run that killed one of her dogs, who she was walking on a leash in Malibu.

Law enforcement sources have told us David has been cleared of criminal wrongdoing in the unfortunate incident.
