Charlie Sheen has decided he's WAYYY too Caucasian to star in the new "Machete" movie -- so he's channeling his Latino roots and changing his name back to Carlos Estevez ... at least for now.

TMZ obtained a screengrab from the upcoming flick ... which shows Sheen will use his birth name in the new Robert Rodriguez joint. It's the first time in his professional career he won't be billed as Charlie Sheen.

It makes sense ... Rodriguez films often celebrate Latino pride (think "El Mariachi," "Desperado," "Machete") so Sheen is just getting into the spirit of the campy thriller about a rampaging Mexican assassin.

A little history ... Charlie Sheen’s dad Martin Sheen was born Ramón Antonio Gerardo Estevez, from his Spanish father's side. He made up "Martin Sheen" to get acting jobs but never changed it legally ... passing "Estevez" to all 4 kids.

Our photog spotted 87-year-old Elizabeth "Mimi" Haist on Monday in L.A. -- the woman Zach rescued from homelessness two years ago.

The story goes ... Zach became friends with Mimi at Fox Coin Laundry in Santa Monica back in 1994 -- where she would help people fold their clothes ... for tips.

When he found out she'd become homeless a few years ago, he decided to help out ... setting her up in a one bedroom apartment and paying her rent.

Zach also began taking Mimi as his date to his movie premieres -- and walked the red carpet with her at "Hangover 2," "The Campaign" ... and now "Hangover 3."

Melissa McCarthy's got some serious pull on the set of her new movie -- 'cause the "Bridesmaids" star just FIRED an extra for mistreating her own little kid on set ... TMZ has learned.

It happened yesterday in Wilmington, NC ... where she's filming "Tammy," directed by her hubby Ben Falcone.

The extra, a woman in her 20s, brought along her child -- age approximately 4-5 -- for the daylong shoot by a lake ... and the standard $58 payday ... sources tell TMZ.

Witnesses say the young mom had been struggling with her kid all morning ... constantly harping on the child to "stop it" and quiet down ... loudly enough to disrupt the production, which included more than 200 extras.

Sources say the last straw came when the mom harshly jerked the child up in the air by the wrist -- and McCarthy saw it all. The director IMMEDIATELY had PAs bounce the woman ... saying she wouldn't tolerate abuse on her set ... and that was that.

The woman's identity was not disclosed. Reps for McCarthy had no immediate comment.

Moral of the story: Don't attempt anything shady around Melissa McCarthy ... she's ALWAYS ON WATCH ...

Utter mayhem at Cannes moments ago ... gun shots rang out in the middle of an interview with Christoph Waltz, and all hell broke loose.

Waltz was on the set of a French news program called Le Grand Journal when the shots were fired, and security whisked him off stage. The rest of the audience rushed the set in panic.

You can't really hear the shots in the video ... but witnesses are saying they came from a man with a gun. There are reports the shots fired were blanks.

The man has since been apprehended by police. No one was injured.

It's been a crazy day at Cannes -- last night, a jewelry company was robbed while hosting a fancy ball at the film festival ... thieves reportedly stole $1 million worth of jewelry.

A knife-wielding man dressed up as Tony Montana from the 1983 classic "Scarface" taunted police during a real-life standoff in L.A. ... and stayed in character the entire time, TMZ has learned.

It all went down at an apartment complex in Hollywood around 10pm Tuesday night -- cops were called to the scene to respond to a man wearing a Tony Montana-style white suit (with the big pimped-out collar) who began screaming at people while waving a machete.

When cops arrived, a police negotiator tried to convince the man to surrender peacefully -- but he responded by screaming various quotes from "Scarface" ... while pointing to a DVD copy of the movie he was carrying in his non-machete hand.

Sources at the scene tell us the Tony-alike taunted police by calling them, "f**king cops" ... and threatening to cut them.

After a 6-hour standoff, cops convinced the man to throw his machete down into the apartment swimming pool ... but officers were forced to use tear gas to take the suspect into custody.
