It's Mission: Matrimony For Tom & Katie

Published | Updated

The Cruise-Holmes nuptials -- the longest buildup to the biggest anticlimax ever -- is finally here!

"I do" day has come for TomKat, as Hollywood A-listers like John Travolta, Will Smith, Brooke Shields, Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony, and Jim Carrey and Jenny McCarthy poured into the Odescalchi Castle. People reports that guests and the bridal party have arrived at the castle for the festivities, and that Victoria Beckham is wearing a very large black hat.

According to an AP report, security was tight as dozens of police patrolled the streets trying to keep gawkers back. But locals have found their own unique ways of celebrating – aka raking in the dough -- the long-awaited nuptials. One restaurant dished out "Tom e Kat" (parmesan cheese with mushrooms and truffles), while one clothing store slapped a signed in its window congratulating TomKat alongside some "Top Gun"-style aviation outfits.

But will the marriage stick? According to reports, the Scientology service may not be legally binding, and the town's spokesperson says, "This is not legal here, and there will be nothing formal about the wedding." Sounds like there may be some Tomfoolery going on here.

So, HOW Do You Know Tom and Katie Again?

Published | Updated

Who knew that TomKat and J.Lo were such bosom buddies? Not us -- maybe not even them.

Given that we thought the guest list at the Cruise-Holmes nuptials in Italy seemed more like a Fellini film, or an episode of "The Surreal Life" -- Marc Anthony? Jenny McCarthy? Jenna Elfman? -- we tried to break down exactly what some of these people were doing all the way over in Bracciano, so far away from home. It should make for some awkward moments during the dinner hour.

Several of the guests -- John Travolta, Elfman and her husband Bodhi, and Leah Remini -- are members of the Scientology tribe, so that makes sense. But what about J. Lo? It turns out that Lopez and Remini are close pals ... and remember that Remini was the first celeb to cop to a Suri sighting, so we know she's in the inner circle.

Now we're pretty sure that Jenny McCarthy and TomKat haven't worked together on anything recently, but J-Mac's squeeze, Jim Carrey, used to go out with Renee Zellweger, who, of course, was Cruise's co-star in "Jerry Maguire." No word from Carrey's rep on whether this rather tenuous connection is the precise reason for his attendance.

Perhaps J.Lo's husband Anthony said it best in a toast he reportedly gave last night in the bar at the wedding hotel in Rome: "To life, to the occasion, and to new friends." Or, as the case may be, complete strangers.

More Hype for Most Overrated Night of the Year

Published | Updated

Heavy security, designer dresses, ties, tuxes and an onslaught of stars ... it's starting to look like Oscar night in Rome.

On the eve of the TomKat vows, the couple's famous friends and family gathered for a pre-wedding bash at a Roman villa. Crowds outside the Hassler Hotel screamed for Hollywood faves Will and Jada Pinkett-Smith and British superstars David and Victoria Beckham. The crowd roared as Jennifer Lopez (looking like a principessa) and her rarely-smiling hubby Marc Anthony emerged.

Brooke Shields clearly isn't as much of an international superstar as the others ... the crowd was nearly silent as she made her way to a limo. Perhaps they don't approve of her medication.

TomKat's Guests: When in Rome ...

Published | Updated

With just one day left until the colossal Roman wedding, guests keep pouring in. Today saw the arrival of Will Smith, British tab faves Victoria and David Beckham. Fellow Scientologist Jenna Elfman has also been spotted in the Italian city of Bracciano.

Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith, who arrived yesterday, was spotted enjoying the sights of Rome, and the shops ... she had a handful of shopping bags. Tom and Katie's moms, along with Holmes' sister, were seen headed into the Vatican Museum this afternoon. Can you say "souvenir Pope snowglobe?"

The TomKat wedding circus will (hopefully) die down after tomorrow's ceremony. Then comes the honeymoon circus!

"Glib" Lauer Takes a Shot at Cruise

Published | Updated

Matt Lauer joked on "Today" this morning that he received an invitation to Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes' wedding in Italy this weekend. Yeah, right.

When asked if he'd gotten his invite, Matt said, "I did. It was addressed to 'Matt, Matt, Matt, Matt, Matt, Matt, Matt.'" Hehehe.

Last year, in a highly publicized interview, Lauer and Cruise got into it over the use of prescription drugs and psychiatry. Besides uttering Matt's name over and over again, Cruise also gave us the memorable line, "Don't be glib."

It's good to see that Matt and Tom have buried the hatchet... where it belongs.

Tom's a Mismatch in Three-Piece Suit

Published | Updated

With TomKat's big fat Italian wedding two days away, Tom, Katie and their soon-to-be legitimate daughter Suri enjoyed dinner with the Mayor of Rome on Wednesday.

Katie carried baby Suri, while Tom, decked out in a pinstriped three-piece suit, kept his protective arm around Holmes' waist. By the way, it seems to us that his burgundy tie and brown shoes don't go well with the grey suit. Just our opinion.

Meanwhile with Jennifer Lopez, Jim Carrey and Brooke Shields among the attendees for the ceremony, helicopters have already begun circling the fortress-like Castle Odescalchi.

Time will tell if the wedding site will be able to keep the paparazzi from crossing the moat.

A-List Hits Rome, Oprah Still Home

Oprah's out, but Brooke Shields gets into the castle. Who else got the golden invite to the TomKat wedding? With the wedding blowout at Castle Odescalchi only two days away, celebs started arriving at Rome's Ciampino Airport.

Who are TomKat's other famous friends? Apparently, the two are buds with Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony, Jim Carrey and girlfriend Jenny McCarthy, and Jada Pinkett Smith, who arrived sans Will.

The parental units of both Tom and Katie arrived today as well, and though there are rumors of Katie's family not approving of the marriage, her parents were all smiles. Could be the free Italian vacation!

Tom to O: Cross Me, I Cross You (Off The List)

Published | Updated

You think Oprah wasn't offended that TomKat didn't invite her to their wedding? Believe that, and you'll believe she doesn't eat Baskin-Robbins at 2 AM to dull the pain. C'mon -- they even invited Brooke Shields, and we all know how Tom feels about her.

Talk Queen Oprah was a notable non-invitee for this weekend's Italian nuptials, and we think we might know why. Almost a year ago to the day last year, O went on "Good Morning America" to hawk her DVD retrospective, and told Diane Sawyer that she thought Tom faked his infamous couch-jumping, fist-pumping, career-disemboweling antics.

"I was not buying -- not buying or not buying," said Oprah at the time. "That's why I kept saying 'you're gone, you're really gone' ... It was wilder than it was appearing to me." Was she unconscious at the time?

Cruise apparently didn't take too kindly to O's skepticism. Oprah, for her part, told "EXTRA," "I don't get invited to everyone's wedding. I don't invite them to everything I do." Meanwhile, we've put together a little photographic roster of other people we don't think will be munching on bacon-wrapped scallops and dancing to Earth, Wind, and Fire covers this weekend at an Italian castle.

Sneaky Cruise Pulls a Fast One on Photogs

Published | Updated

We spotted Katie Holmes making an exit from a hotel in Rome with Tom's son Connor yesterday, but it was unclear if Cruise himself was with them.

We can now confirm that Cruise was in the vehicle with his family and wife-to-be, and we have the video to prove it. Tom and Katie were both in the backseat, wearing matching black sunglasses.

It's not too late, Katie!

The Mob Raises Hell in Rome

Published | Updated

TomKat set off a photog frenzy as they left their posh Rome hotel for dinner.

Paparazzi swarming the Hassler Hotel in the Italian capital got their payoff as the soon-to-wed couple emerged in a caravan of black SUVs. Though the two were rumored to be staying at the hotel, located at the top of the Spanish Steps, hotel staff denied Tom and Katie were there. That was a buncha spaghetti.

Rumors were confirmed when two black Mercedes, carrying Katie Holmes and Tom's son Connor, whooshed from the parking lot. While AP reports that Tom Cruise was also in one of the vehicles, he can't be seen in the video. Damned tinted windows!

TomKat: Wed Under a Bad Sign?

Published | Updated

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes might want to reschedule their Saturday wedding if it's set for the early afternoon -- because if the stars have anything to say about, they're doomed!

According to the star-watchers at AOL Horoscopes, the TomKat marriage is destined to be an impossible mission if the ceremony is scheduled between 6:41 AM and 3:46 PM, to be precise. That's when the Moon will be what's known as "Void-of-Course" in Libra at 6:41 AM, and then will not enter Scorpio until 3:46 PM, meaning that nothing good can come out of anything if it happens during that time. Later in the day, the news isn't much better; the Moon in Scorpio can dredge up a lot of dark, ugly emotions.

Of course, the other planets involved -- Venus, Saturn, Mars, and Neptune, as well as the Sun -- don't spectacularly align for the couple; with foreboding, hardship and destruction the dominant themes of the planetary tea leaves. The couple reportedly arrived in Rome today to get everything set for the Nov. 18 nuptials. Star-crossed lovers indeed!

Kid Caught in Cruise Crossfire; Tom Dazed Too

Published | Updated

It was a knock-down-drag-out day at the soccer field for Tom Cruise on Saturday, problem is -- the victim was an innocent toddler caught in Tom's paparazzi crush.

It went down moments after Tom put his soon-to-be wife, Katie Holmes, in a passionate liplock, then took off for the restroom -- as usual, a crash of photogs followed. As the star smiled and slowly paced toward the public toilets, a toddler wandered into the crush, and fell to the ground. "She's bleeding!" screamed the child's mother.

A shocked Cruise stared blankly before extending his arm in a vain attempt to console the kid with a backrub. The child's infuriated mother picked up the kid and began walking away, offering a few words of advice to the world's most famous actor: "You should live in Colorado, get away from them (the photogs)."

Moments later, Tom whispered into the ear of one of his "people," who took off after the Mom and her wailing tot.

After the drama, Tom finally made it to the restroom. Mission accomplished.

Nothing Says Couples Drama Like Thanksgiving

Published | Updated

Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and along with the plentiful servings of turkey, stuffing, and pumpkin pie, celeb-watchers know that there's another dish best served right around this holiday -- couples drama.

Last year, of course, Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey announced that they were splitting up -- on Thanksgiving Day no less, causing glossy-magazine editors and showbiz news show producers no end of grief. Then, after spending a much-buzzed-about weekend at a spa in Arizona, Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston were pulled over on suspicion that Vaughn was driving under the influence (though no charges were filed). Meanwhile, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, still in the first blossom of romance, made a high-profile do-gooding trip to Pakistan to visit earthquake victims over the holiday, making their archrivals Vaughniston look positively sybaritic by comparison.

This year, the couples are getting started a little early. First, Reese and Ryan and now Britney and K-Fed have already made big headlines with their respective breakups, and Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes may well tie the knot in Italy right before Turkey Day. Add to that the Paul McCartney and Heather Mills nuclear war as well as whispers about Scarlett Johansson and Josh Hartnett on the rocks, and Thanksgiving 2006 could prove to be yet another couples-drama-laden holiday to remember.

TomFat Mouth Wide Open

Published | Updated

It may have seemed like a mission impossible for Tom Cruise, but he has gone and done the unthinkable: packed on the pounds.

Ever since nabbing the woman of his dreams (and mother of his child), Cruise has definitely let himself go. While his bride-to-be goes from pregnant to slender (almost unbelievably so) in preparation for their upcoming nuptials, Cruise might want to make sure Giorgio Armani does last-minute fittings of that tux, just in case.

Indeed, Cruise and Holmes have favored Mastro's and Wolfgang Puck's CUT steakhouses for their well-photographed supper jaunts, and as their respective menus suggest , this is hardly low-cal cuisine.

All play and no work make Tom, apparently, a fat boy.

TomKat a Kick at Soccer

Published | Updated

Another Saturday, another TomKat sighting at a soccer game.

The soon-to-wed couple were seen at Cruise's daughter Isabella's game yesterday, where Tom was overly accomodating to the paparazzi. Never one to shy away from camera attention, Tom made sure that everyone got a shot of him with his baby momma, and even helped our photographer restore his balance after accidently bumping into him.

After the game, the sunglassed twosome and Cruise's two tots took their sweet time walking to their black SUV, mostly due to the swarm of photogs surrounding their every move.
