Shia LaBeouf has an avenue to get the charges dropped in his battery and petty theft case ... as long as he keeps his nose clean for the next year.
The "Honey Boy" star appeared in court Thursday and was placed into a judicial diversion program, which lays out several conditions he must satisfy in order to get his misdemeanor charges dismissed.
Here's the boxes Shia's gotta check off over the next 12 months ... attend private therapy for anger management at least once a week, continue with his alcohol monitoring, no attempts to use or obtain a weapon and no attempts to use force or violence.
TMZ broke the story ... Shia and a man got into some kind of verbal spat before the altercation allegedly turned physical back in June. Our sources had said when the dust settled ... Shia took the man's hat and left the scene.
It was unclear what led to the verbal altercation, but the man filed a police report and cops ultimately determined Shia was the aggressor. The case was ultimately handled by the L.A. City Attorney, who charged the actor with misdemeanor battery and petty theft charges.
Shia's also been ordered to stay 100 yards away from the location of the alleged incident, and he's gotta stay 100 yards away from the alleged victim, who he cannot contact.
The court's gonna check in on Shia's progress in 3 months, and if he's a good boy for the next year the charges will be dismissed. If he screws up, though, Shia could face trial.

Shia LaBeouf to Bartender So What If I Labeled You a Racist?! It's My Opinion, Deal with It
Shia LaBeouf has a pretty simple response to the L.A. bartender who sued him after Shia called him a "f**king racist bitch" -- tough noogies, dude.
According to docs filed by Shia, and obtained by TMZ ... his defense in the slander lawsuit is that name-calling might be "obnoxious and vulgar, but it's not defamatory." The whole thing started with a bizarre scene in April ... when Shia went off on the bartender in Jerry's Famous Deli.
Shia, who witnesses said seemed drunk, went off on the bartender for not serving him French fries -- which seemed like an act of racism to Shia. As he put it that night, "You f**ked up!!"
In his docs, Shia says the bartender's lawsuit -- which seeks $5 million -- should be dismissed because he was merely expressing his opinion, and his right to free speech allows him to do so.
Like we said ... tough noogies.

Shia LaBeouf was "incredibly professional," "well-prepared," "so nice" and "says hello to everyone on set" ... and that's why everyone connected with the production of the movie he's shooting in Savannah is shocked by Shia's arrest and police station racist rant.

Our sources say the first anyone heard that there were problems was Saturday, after TMZ posted the story Shia was arrested for public intoxication and disorderly conduct.
We're told Shia returned to set on Monday and no one spoke of the arrest, except word got around it was "no big deal" and would be handled in court.
The shoot is at the halfway point, and no one on the cast and crew knows how the remainder will be affected by Shia's apology, which includes assurance he will be "actively taking steps" to deal with his addiction.
The videos we've been posting -- including this one showing Shia attacking a pay phone in a jail cell -- was news to the crew.

Shia LaBeouf Arrest 'He Will Not Divide Us' Exhibit/Protest Will Continue
Shia LaBeouf's arrest and heated exchanges with protesters aren't scaring off the museum hosting his web cam ... but it has a warning for the actor.
