The child abuse allegations against Brad Pitt have been referred over to the FBI ... TMZ has learned.

As we reported, the L.A. County Dept. of Children and Family Services received an anonymous call that Brad was wasted on a private jet last week and became physically and verbally abusive to his kids.

As we reported, the DCFS followed protocol and notified the LAPD. Law enforcement sources say the LAPD's Abused Child Unit (ACU) got the report, but determined that the Department did not have jurisdiction because the alleged incident occurred in the air, on a flight from France to the U.S.

We know ... the plane landed a week ago Wednesday just before 8 PM at an airport in Minnesota. That's when eyewitnesses say Brad was "out of control" on the tarmac and even tried to leave in a fuel truck.

Our LAPD sources say because the incident occurred in the air, the FBI has jurisdiction. The ACU then closed its file and referred the matter to the FBI.

As we reported, DCFS has already interviewed Brad and Angelina separately and they will also interview the kids. Our LAPD sources say if those interviews produce information suggesting there was possible abuse at their L.A. family home, the LAPD will open a new case.

Our Pitt sources say the actor denies committing any sort of abuse.

Brad Pitt is under investigation by the LAPD and L.A. County Dept. of Children and Family Services for allegedly getting verbally abusive and physical with his children, and that's what triggered the divorce ... TMZ has learned.

Sources familiar with the situation tell us, Brad, Angelina and their kids were on a flight last Wednesday when he allegedly got wasted on the private jet. He allegedly went wild, screaming and getting physical with the kids.

We're told the plane landed at an airport around 8 PM, and witnesses say Pitt continued his rant on the tarmac, and even tried leaving in one of the fuel trucks.

Our sources say someone either on the plane or the tarmac anonymously reported the incident to the L.A. County Dept. of Children and Family Services. We're told Brad and Angelina have already been interviewed and DCFS plans to interview the kids as well. That investigation is ongoing.

We're also told the LAPD has the case ... which is routine when anyone reports child abuse. We do not know the specifics of the alleged abuse ... just that it was supposedly both verbal and physical.

Our sources say this incident triggered Jolie to separate from Brad the next day and file for divorce just days later.

A source close to Brad tells TMZ, "He takes the matter very seriously and says he did not commit any abuse of his children," adding, "It's unfortunate that people involved are continuing to present him in the worst possible light."

Steve Levitan's estranged wife is just out for a petty cash grab in their divorce ... at least that's how the "Modern Family" creator put it in a very candid email to her.

Levitan set the tone right off the bat, starting the email with ... "Krista Schmuck." We should point out ... that's her maiden name, but there's a chance he was going for a double entendre.

In the email -- which was filed in their divorce case -- Steve warns Krista she's going to have to blow millions on her lawyers just to get a dime out of him. He also calls her out for having loose lips -- and says he wishes she handled the split more like Ben Affleck and Jen Garner ... or Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin.

Angelina Jolie isn't going to get her way when it comes to custody ... at least if Brad Pitt has anything to say about it, because TMZ has learned he'll fight and fight hard for joint physical custody of their 6 kids.

Sources connected with Brad tell us, Angelina is dreaming if she thinks she can take his kids away from him. We broke the story, Angelina wants sole physical custody of the children ... she wants a judge to give him visitation, but that's it.

Our sources tell us Brad says, "There's no chance that's going to happen." Pitt wants joint custody ... he doesn't want to interfere with Angelina's ability to be a co-parent, but he won't allow her to thwart him.

This now promises to become the flash point in the divorce and it has the potential to become a fierce legal battle.

That said, our Brad sources say he's quick to add Angelina's a "great mother" and doesn't want to hurt her in the divorce. The sources say Brad and Angelina haven't gotten along for months and have had frank talks about divorce several times, so this wasn't a shock. Nevertheless, he's still devastated.

As we reported, our Angelina sources claim Brad heavily indulges in weed and alcohol and that, combined with what she claims is an anger problem, poses a danger to their kids.

Our Brad sources insist ... he's never put his kids in danger ... ever.

Adele is so shaken by the "end of an era," she dedicated her NYC concert to Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt -- and it doesn't seem like she was kidding.

Between songs at her Madison Square Garden gig Tuesday night, Adele blurted out ... "Brangelina are broken up!" She admitted the celeb split had been on her mind all day, and this was going to be her moment to work out some feelings. One big giant therapy session ... except her fans were paying.

Leave it to Magic Johnson to make you feel better about Angelina Jolie calling it quits with Brad Pitt -- in fact, he's still hoping they can work things out.

Magic turned marriage therapist in Bev Hills Tuesday afternoon -- a few hours after TMZ broke the big D news -- and he had some sage advice for Brad and Angie.

As we've reported, there are already signs it's going to be a nasty split ... but somehow Magic's smile makes you think there's still a shot.

"Modern Family" creator Steve Levitan has a new idea for a functional modern family ... lose the wife who drags him to court for daring to visit his daughter.

Levitan -- who grosses $2.4 million a month -- is in the throes of a super nasty divorce in which his wife has now twice tried, unsuccessfully, to keep him away from the family home.

The latest blowup occurred the day before the Emmys. Steve invited his daughter, Hannah, to come home from college for the weekend so he could take her to the awards ceremony. Hannah was staying at the family home with her mom, Krista, when Steve drove up to take her for a drink.

Steve says he was on a public sidewalk when Hannah came up to hug him. Krista was out of town, but a burly security guard was ready to pounce. The guard got out of a car, walked up to Steve and said, "Can I help you with something." Steve simply responded, "No."

But Steve was pissed, saying in legal docs he felt like he was being treated like a criminal.

Krista ran to court Tuesday, asking a judge for a restraining order ... keeping him a hundred yards from the family home. She made all sorts of allegations, including aggressive courtroom conduct. She said he tried to intimidate her in the courthouse cafeteria by staring her down.

She also says he assaulted her back in May at their son's volleyball awards ceremony by grabbing her by the arms and saying, "Get ready for World War III."

The judge denied her request for a restraining order. This is the second time Krista's been shut down in court for a restraining order.

Angelina Jolie has put her kids at risk by calling out Brad Pitt as a bad dad ... so claim sources connected to Brad.

We're told Pitt is "furious" at Angelina for allegedly spinning stories that he poses a risk to their kids because of anger issues fueled by weed and alcohol. Pitt says there's now a bounty on the heads of the entire family, because they've now become a prime target for the gaggle of paparazzi.

We're told the way Brad put it is this ... "She's just unleashed hell."

The perimeter of their Hollywood Hills home is now blanketed by photogs, and the LAPD is now patrolling at regular intervals.

We're told Brad had conversations with Angelina over the last few days and pleaded for her to handle the divorce "like adults." He wanted to low-key it for the benefit of the kids. Instead, he says, she went scorched earth by asking for sole physical custody and suggesting he's a risky dad.

Brad, we're told, is angry at Angelina and fearful for their kids.

Angelina Jolie is lying by spreading the word ... Brad Pitt has anger issues that become dangerous when mixed with weed and alcohol ... so say sources directly connected with Brad.

TMZ broke the story, Angelina filed for divorce because she believes Brad poses a danger to the kids by fueling his "anger problem" with pot and alcohol.

Our Brad sources say it's "a malicious lie" and that "he's a loving and devoted father who has never and would never put his children in any dangerous situation."

The sources did not address the weed and alcohol issues.

As we reported, Angelina wants sole physical custody, with Brad getting only visitation. Our Brad sources say he wants to "share" physical custody with Angelina to make sure he remains a "present father" to the children. As for whether he asks for joint custody in his legal response ... stay tuned.

Sources connected with the couple tell us ... Angelina's decision to file has to do with the way Brad was parenting the children ... she was extremely upset with his methods.

Our sources say, Angelina became "fed up" with Brad's consumption of weed and possibly alcohol, and mixed with what she believes is "an anger problem" ... felt it became dangerous for the children.

Indeed, Angelina's entertainment attorney Robert Offer says she made the decision "for the health of the family."

We're told there was no alleged "third person" ... her decision to file was solely over Brad's interaction with their children.

Jolie, who's being repped by disso queen Laura Wasser, is not asking for spousal support.

Jolie lists the date of separation as Sept. 15, 2016.

They married in August 2014. They've been together since 2004.

The last time we saw them together was in July when they took the twins, Knox and Vivienne, out for a birthday breakfast in West Hollywood.
