HBO's 'Luck' Another Horse Dies on Set

Published | Updated

There has been another fatal horse accident on the set of the HBO series "Luck" -- a third horse has died, TMZ has learned.

We're told the crew was trying to get a horse out of its stable when it reared and fell back, suffering a head injury. The horse was euthanized at the Santa Anita Race Track in Arcadia.

This is the third time a horse had to be euthanized during the filming of the series, starring Dustin Hoffman.

HBO was scrambling after TMZ called 2 hours ago with the story, and the publicist, Karen Jones, stalled us while they got their story together. In fact, when we told her about our story, she said it wasn't all true -- but it was.

PETA to HBO The Blood of The 'Luck' Horses is On Your Hands

All three horses that died on the set of HBO's "Luck" were victims of "sloppy oversight" on the part of HBO and the show producers ... and they should all be ASHAMED ... this according to PETA.

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals are PISSED at HBO after a 3rd horse died during production Tuesday ... and a rep tells TMZ, "All the evidence we have gathered points to sloppy oversight, the use of unfit, injured horses, and disregard for the treatment of race horses."

What's worse ... PETA

Steve Cooley on Monday -- one day before horse #3 died -- asking him to investigate the deadly situation on the set of "Luck" ... but no immediate action was taken.

HBO had released a statement following the death of horse #3 saying, "An American Humane Association Certified Safety Representative was on the premises when the accident occurred, and as always, all safety precautions were in place."

Not good enough for PETA ... which says, "We will want answers on HBO’s latest casualty. Filming must stop now."

TMZ spoke with Jack Carone from In Defense of Animals ... who said, "Would any intelligent person feel moved to murder a magnificent elephant, then further insult and desecrate by hacking off his or her tail as an additional gesture of dominance?"

He added, "Privilege has clearly not bought them the sensitivity or wisdom to view the world as anything but their personal playground, including the imagined entitlement to end the lives of sensitive and social animals for mere amusement."

"This is truly a pitiful testimony to their lack of character and compassion, at the ultimate expense of their innocent fellow Earthlings."

As TMZ previously reported, Donald's sons -- Donald Jr. and Eric -- went on a hunting safari in Zimbabwe a year ago this month, and proudly showed off their trophy kills -- including an elephant, crocodile, kudu, civet cat and waterbuck.

Fireman did concede Santino routinely complained about the building’s anti-dog policies.

Santino's sister tells the paper the family is holding off on funeral arrangements until the dead dog's ashes are brought home ... saying, "They'll be buried together."

Struggling Soap Actor Commits Suicide After Euthanizing Beloved Dog

A soap actor killed himself this week on his 47th birthday ... hours after he was forced to put his beloved dog to sleep under pressure from his Manhattan condo.

According to the NY Post the building had a ban on pit-bulls, but Nick Santino's dog had been grandfathered in ... which didn't sit well with some of the neighbors. Some claimed the dog was loud and aggressive, but others said building management was just harassing Santino ... trying to force him to get rid of the dog.

Santino had Rocco put to sleep on Tuesday -- for some reason he felt that was his only option.

According to the paper, a tearful Santino brought dog treats to the doorman and said, "Give these to the other dogs. Rocco is no more."

Later that day Santino left a suicide note that read, "Today I betrayed my best friend and put down my best friend ... Rocco trusted me and I failed him. He didn't deserve this."

Santino -- who has appeared on "All My Children" and "The Guiding Light" -- OD'd on pills early the next morning.

Rocco was cremated and friends told the Post Santino will be too.

'Batman' Producer Sued For Abandoning His Dogs

Published | Updated

Jon Peters -- the bigshot Hollywood producer behind the Michael Keaton "Batman" flicks, "Flashdance," "Rainman," "The Color Purple," "Caddyshack," and many other huge movies, -- is THE WORST DOG OWNER EVER ... this according to a new lawsuit.

Peters has been accused of abandoning two dogs he left at a Burbank dog kennel back in 2010 ... and blowing off the MASSIVE bill he racked up in the process.

According to the lawsuit, Peters' ex-wife took his two doggies -- an Akita named Bear and a Doberman Pinscher named Beau -- to the California K-9 Academy in June 2010. Peters needed to board the pooches because he was moving to a new home.

K-9 claims Peters fell off the radar ... hardly ever checking in on the animals. After more than 200 days, K-9 claims Peters finally sent his assistant to pick up Bear.

But Beau wasn't so lucky.

K-9 claims the Pinscher spent more than 365 days in the kennel ... and finally the kennel asked Peters for permission to sell the dog ... and the absentee dogfather signed off.

Even though the dogs are out of K-9's possession -- the kennel claims there's still some unfinished business -- more than $25,000 in unpaid bills for training, boarding, vet care, etc., which is the basis of the lawsuit.

Peters' lawyer tells TMZ ... the lawsuit is bogus, adding, "Mr. Peters has an established history of caring for animals and specifically took legal action to protect the animals involved in this matter." The lawyer says he'll fight the lawsuit.
