Arnold was walking out of his fave Brentwood bakery when he was simultaneously asked about his estranged wife ... AND his famous "Terminator 2" line.

Addressing the crowd at an Israeli Independence Day event in L.A., the former California governor said "I just talked to Maria an hour ago before I came here and we both were saying the same thing, we are amazed and extremely blessed to be surrounded by so many wonderful people."

He continued, "We both love each other very much, we are very fortunate we have four extraordinary children and we're taking it one day at a time."

We're told Arnold finally gets it ... that Maria couldn't stand the fact that he was ignoring her and her needs. And, we're told, Arnold has made some headway, making Maria "ambivalent" at times. One source very familiar with the couple says, "Arnold has done a 180. He's been really sweet to her since all this went down."

Notably, they recently spent an evening at an L.A. area hotel for a special occasion. Maria is confessing to friends ... Arnold has emotional power over her, but as we first reported, she's been "miserable" for several years.

Sources connected to Schwarzenegger tell us, Arnold and five unidentified male buddies took off for Napa Valley last week for a few days of man-pampering -- crashing at one of the ritziest resorts in town ... the Meadowood.

According to sources, the crew hit up a different expensive restaurant every night -- and when they weren't eating out ... we're told they ordered tons of pricey wine to their hotel rooms, played lots of cards, and smoked cigars.

If that weren't enough -- we're told the guys also took several long rides around the valley on their Harleys.

Of course, Arnold and Maria announced their separation to the media just days after Arnie returned from his man-cation.

We're told Maria has been unhappy with Arnold for years ... and first planned to split with him back in 2009 ... but her mother passed away and Maria decided to hold off.

Then, we're told, Maria wanted to try to break it off again in January 2011 ... but her father died ... once again putting the split on hold.

Our source tells us Maria is fed up with Arnold's infidelities ... coupled with the fact he's been "impossible" to live with. We're told Maria's kids acknowledge the issues -- and have pushed their mother to call off the marriage.

People who have spoken with Maria tell us ... despite her STRONG public persona, Maria has become a "shell of the woman" she appears to be because she is "terrified" of Arnold ... but in an emotional, not a physical way.

However, once Maria finally decided to separate from Arnold -- and moved into a fancy Beverly Hills hotel -- we're told Arnold pulled a 180 ... and he's been "working extremely hard" to win her back. As one source says, "He could not be sweeter now that she's left him."

To make things even more complicated, Arnold and Maria have been spending LOTS of time together lately ... hanging out during Easter, Mother's Day and even their 25th anniversary ... which they celebrated together at an expensive hotel.

A source close to the couple tells us ... despite their differences, Arnold and Maria have "serious chemistry between them" ... which is why she has such ambivalence about the break-up.

We're told Maria moved out of the couple's L.A. mansion months ago. Sources tell us she's been extremely unhappy in her marriage for years, complaining about Arnold's out of control ego, as well as his womanizing.

We're also told Maria feels Arnold has ignored her for years and she's felt terribly unappreciated.

Sources say the couple has spent "very little time together" for several years. Maria was frequently absent from Sacramento while Arnold was Governor.

The situation got worse once Arnold left office and decided he wanted to resurrect his movie career. Maria felt Arnold was becoming more erratic -- more "unstable."

But Arnold WAS wearing his ring on Sunday ... the day before the couple announced their split.

Meanwhile, Maria Shriver has been ringless since mid-March ... right after Maria posted a cryptic video on YouTube asking her fans for advice on how to "transition" into the next phase of her life.

The couple released a joint statement saying, "After a great deal of thought, reflection, discussion and prayer, we came to this decision together. At this time, we are living apart while we work on the future of our relationship."

The statement continues, "We are continuing to parent our four children together. They are the light and center of both of our lives."

The couple adds, "We consider this a private matter and neither we nor any of our friends or family will have further comment."

63-year-old Arnold and 55-year-old Maria met in 1977 when Tom Brokaw introduced them at a charity event. They were married in 1986.

By all accounts, the show went well -- Sheen had a few guests on stage ... including Dennis Rodman (see below). Charlie even offered up a few words of wisdom for Lindsay Lohan: "I would hug her and let her know it's gonna be ok."

Sheen's next tour stop is Tuesday night in Houston, TX.

As we previously reported, Pia and Mark went out on a date the NIGHT AFTER she got the boot from "Idol" ... and have since ratcheted up their romance.

There's a report out that Pia unceremoniously dumped her caterer boyfriend Carlos Nunez to trade up to Ballas.

But our "Dancing with the Stars"/"American Idol" spies tell us ... Carlos was history long before Mark entered the picture.

Sources close to Bree (pictured left) tell us ... the gang was in Toronto on Saturday morning, where Sheen had performed the night before, when Olson decided she couldn't hang with Charlie anymore ... and split.

As we previously reported, Bree left the gang back in March ... but reconciled with Sheen and rejoined the gang.

We're told Sheen's OTHER goddess, Natalie Kenly (pictured right), is still a member of Team Win.

UPDATE: TMZ just spoke with Bree ... who told us she DID leave Saturday morning -- but not for good.

Bree says she had to return home to Indiana for an upcoming court hearing stemming from her DUI -- but insists she'll be rejoining the tour as soon as the hearing ends.

For the first time since they announced their split, Cox and Arquette gave a joint explanation about their break-up ... and Courteney explained, "Whenever I would like need consoling from David ... he could not literally put his arm around me for one second without completely getting a boner."

Howard responded, "I think I know what you're saying ... in other words, you'd like to know you're not always the sex object." Courteney agreed.

When Stern asked if the two would ever get back together -- David made it clear he WANTED to reconcile ... but Courteney insisted they were better off apart.

According to a report filed last week with the Coral Gables Police Department -- Glen broke up with his ex-GF Tia Santoro over a week ago and refused to let her back into his house ... which made it difficult for her to move out her stuff.

Tia hit up local law enforcement for support -- and according to the report, an officer accompanied her to Glen's house so she could collect her things.

Glen was cooperative -- and, the report continues, he and Tia even reached a verbal agreement to share custody of their 8-month-old daughter ... at least until a more formal custody agreement is reached.
