Swag Sweet or Sour?

Published | Updated

Celebs do love those sumptuous swag suites during awards time, but these stars clearly don't know about swag taxes. Jeri Ryan, Neil Patrick Harris, and Tia Carrere are just so excited about their "free" gifts like vacation packages, clothes, shoes, jewelry, and gadgets, though maybe their accountants ought to be telling them that "free" really means, oh, at least a 30% tax on the total value of the stuff.

For these, and other swag-lovin' celebs' benefit, TMZ provides a little tutorial into what these folks think they're receiving for free, and what they're actually going to end up shelling out to Uncle Sam.

Manilow: Not Hip Enough For Emmys

Published | Updated

In its never-ending quest to provide you with the moments that everyone will be talking about Monday after the Emmys, TMZ offers: King of schmaltz-pop Barry Manilow.

The 60-year old crooner will be performing at the Emmy Awards on Sunday, and the drama of his performance might not be whether the Manilow can still hit the high notes, but whether he can get through it without falling flat on his face.

Manilow announced earlier this month that he was going to delay surgery on both of his hips until after the Emmy Awards, where he'll be participating in a special tribute to Dick Clark. The singer is also nominated for Best Performance in a Variety Show for his PBS special "Music and Passion." But the usually self-assured Barry recently said, "I'm anxious to make it through the Emmy Awards and then right to the hospital."

So it looks like it'll be a bit of a struggle for Manilow and his rickety hips, providing one of the more riveting, TiVo-ready moments of the telecast. Will he make it? And do you really care? Most of all, what Manilow classic performance will you miss the most if the legend is laid up for longer than we'd care to think about?

Teens Choose Dolce

Published | Updated

Aside from the Nick and Jessica's "awkward" moment, the bubble gum-chewing Brit and the burst of bleeps during K-Fed's performance, fashion reigned supreme on the red carpet at Sunday's Teen Choice Awards!

A galaxy of stars rocked iconic fashion house Dolce and Gabbana and its younger, funkier line D&G, giving the award show a young, fresh and fun feel- the perfect choice for a teen award show.

Celebs decked out in Dolce and Gabbana included: Jessica Alba, Sophia Bush, Jensen Ackles, Chad Michael Murray and Vanessa Hudgens.

Vaughniston's Award-Winning Chemistry

Published | Updated

Though Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn maintain they are not, and never have been, a couple, the two were awarded "Choice Movie Chemistry" for their relationship in the film "The Break-Up."

Appearing to be anything but a couple, the two who just last week denied tabloid reports that they're engaged, took constant jabs at each other during last night's Teen Choice Awards telecast.

Aniston kept cutting Vince off during their acceptance speech, joking "You know what, you probably have enough chemistry for both of us, I'm actually surprised that you're not just nominated for this award all by yourself."

Though it was all in good fun, the two ended the taped speech looking annoyed and with Vaughn saying, "All right -- is this over with?"

Will The Taxman Kill The Swag Bag?

Published | Updated

The celebrity swag haul this year at the Emmys – whether you're a winner, loser, or just a presenter – could top $100,000 per person. But with the federal government and IRS in the midst of a vigorous push to get stars and Jane Q. Citizen alike to pay taxes on gifts and winnings, it might just behoove celebs to lay off those tempting gift bags altogether and avoid the hefty 50% tax bill, not to mention the prying eyes of the taxman.

This year, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, the group that gives out the Emmys, has a bag valued at anywhere from $27,000 to $33,000 to thank the presenters in the Aug. 27 ceremony. Distinctive Assets is giving away a $42,000 trove of consolation prizes (above), including wine club and gym memberships, a VIP package at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas, and gift certificates for life coaching, LASIK eye surgery, and something called "Fan Database Management Services" – and that's for the losers. And GBK Productions is setting up a gift "suite" for nominees and special guests that features a gold-plated Nokia cell phone and a lease on a Ford hybrid car -- $50,000 worth, all told.

Paris Reads ... for MTV

Published | Updated

Paris Hilton, never one to be known for her high IQ, was photographed Sunday wearing glasses and reading "The Art of War." Don't worry, you're not hallucinating. Paris was only shooting a promo for the upcoming MTV Video Music Awards.

Hilton co-stars in the ad with MTV's famous Moonman, who also shot spots with the Red Hot Chili Peppers and All-American Rejects.

The VMA's will be held August 31st in New York City.

WWE's Dissed Diva: I'll Be Back

Published | Updated

The race for the next WWE Diva was narrowed down to five Monday night, with Rebecca DiPietro eliminated after being dumped on by the other contestants.

In an interview after she was bounced for the $250,000 prize on Monday night's "RAW," DiPietro was gracious in defeat. "It was a tough competition," she said. "Hopefully, you'll see me again."

Her competitors weren't quite so ladylike. J.T. Tinney and Erica Chevillar both said they thought Rebecca was the contender who should go. "She's too concerned about her look," sniffed J.T.

VMAs Set to Sizzle

Published | Updated

It's a battle between some peppers and a sizzling hip shaker for the most MTV Video Music Awards nominations.

Shakira and the Red Hot Chili Peppers lead the pack with a total of seven noms each. Madonna and Vegas rockers Panic! at the Disco each have five nominations and Christina Aguilera picked up four.

This year's winners will be determined a little differently from past shows. For the first time in VMA history, viewers can vote for their favorites in every category -- rather than just the viewer's choice.

The VMAs will air live from New York's Radio City Music Hall on August 31. Artists and groups already confirmed to perform include Justin Timberlake, Beyonce, T.I., Ludacris, The Killers and Panic! at the Disco.

Cameras caught up with Justin, Beyonce and T.I. as they each spoke about what it's like to perform at the VMAs.

P!nk Named AIM's 'Best Buddy'

Published | Updated

Users of AIM, AOL's instant messaging service, have named P!nk their 'Best Musical Buddy.'

Fans voted the Grammy-winning artist as the musical act they would most like to add to their AIM Buddy List® window.

While a good portion of AIM's 43 million users may have voted for P!nk, it doesn't look like they are buying her latest album "I'm Not Dead."

Released in April and despite good reviews, P!nk's fourth album has yet to even go Gold (i.e. sell over 500,000 copies).

If sales don't pick up fast, it looks like P!nk is going to be in the red.

MTV Says Madonna & Britney Broke the Rules

Published | Updated

In 1989 Madonna's video for "Like a Prayer" was considered extremely controversial. It featured burning crosses and Madonna kissing a black Christ-like figure. How times have changed. Today that same video has landed her Madgesty on top of MTV UK's list of the 100 Videos That Broke the Rules.

Britney Spears' sexy schoolgirl antics in "Baby One More Time" makes it to number two, and Michael Jackson's 14-minute zombie epic "Thriller" moonwalks into the third spot.

Madonna, whose "Justify My Love" video was banned by MTV in 1990, also has two other videos in the top 10 with "Vogue" at number 5 and "Ray of Light" at number 4.

MTV compiled the list by polling 10,000 viewers and will play the entire 100 videos as part of its 25th Anniversary (yikes!) on August 1st.

Take THAT, Emmys!

Published | Updated

What do the two most famously-snubbed Emmy contenders -- "Lost" and "Desperate Housewives" -- have in common? They're both on ABC, of course. And apparently the net is so upset about those shows getting passed over (even though they scored more nods than any other broadcast network) that ABC is counter-programming the Emmy ceremony by airing "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl."

According to the Hollywood Reporter, ABC will air the first "Pirates" film on August 27, while NBC will be airing the Emmys at the same time. ABC and USA paid in excess of $20 million for the right to broadcast the film that spawned the biggest movie of 2006.

Conan O'Brien, who is hosting this year's telecast, joked about the move in an interview on Monday.

"Yeah, I'm actually feeling like this is an attack on me," O'Brien said. "And so I'd like to announce that we're going to counterprogram with the second 'Pirates of the Caribbean' movie. I've gotten Disney's permission to take my poor-quality bootleg and project it on a wall of the Shrine Auditorium sometime about mid-show. We're gonna wind up losing about 15 categories, but I feel like it's worth it."

K-Fed's Chance to Prove Himself

Published | Updated

All the world will be watching the 2006 Teen Choice Awards with anticipation of the debut live performance by Kevin Federline. Yes... we said K-Fed. And we said live.

Federline will close the show with a performance of his single "Lose Control," set to be released in August. Kevin, who started his career as a car wash attendant turned backup dancer, is beginning the rounds to promote his new album "Playing with Fire."

Also on hand for the show are Jessica Simpson and Dane Cook who will be co-hosting the event. The event could be very interesting, to say the least.

The show airs Sunday August 20th on FOX.

Madonna, Lindsay & Jessica Musical Threesome?

Published

A British tabloid is "reporting" that Madonna is in talks with Lindsay Lohan and Jessica Simpson about performing with her at the MTV Music Awards next month.

We all remember the kisses with Britney and Christina where Madonna sucked some youthful soul into her aging body from 2003's Awards. Now, Madonna is looking to extract life force from Jess and Linds and rumor has it that three will team for a "bondage-inspired" performance.

Well, we know that Madonna has already looked to take Lindsay under her wing. But, Jessica too? Will poppa Joe Simpson allow his little angel to get all bondage-d up for a stage tryst with Her Madge-esty? Of course he would - didn't you see Dukes of Hazzard? Ok, me neither...but back to the subject at hand. Maybe Jess is appearing with her as payback for that awfully familiar sounding song of hers? Who knows what will happen, but I'll certainly be tuning in!
