Tom Brady loves to put the future of the New England Patriots in jeopardy -- because last week, he partook in some extremely risky behavior for an NFL quarterback ... jumping off a MASSIVE waterfall in Costa Rica.

It all went down in Montezuma July 16 -- Tom, Gisele, and some buddies went swimming ... and subsequently decided to tempt fate by throwing themselves off a giant rock face.

Thankfully for Pats fans, Brady wasn't injured -- but we're guessing his coaches won't be pleased by the photographs.

The cast of "Modern Family" wants out of their current contracts for the show -- all in a bold move to score much fatter paychecks.

The cast members -- Ty Burrell, Julie Bowen, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Eric Stonestreet and Sofia Vergara -- just filed a lawsuit against 20th Century Fox TV, demanding their contracts be declared null and void.

According to the lawsuit, the contracts violate a "7 year" law in California that bars personal service contracts with a duration longer than 7 years. As a result, the cast wants them tossed out ... presumably so they can renegotiate for more money.

The cast also wants the freedom to pursue other acting gigs outside "Modern Family" and Fox -- a freedom that's severely curtailed by their current contracts.

It's the latest in the bitter salary negotiations between the cast members and 20th Century Fox.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fox recently made an offer to increase the cast's salary as follows: $150,000 per episode plus a $50,000 per episode bonus for season 4; $200,000 per episode for season 5, $225,000 for season 6, and up to $325,000 for an anticipated season 9.

But the cast reportedly rejected the offer and is now demanding much, much more.

Mariah Carey was a "nightmare to work with" during her brief stint as a guest mentor on "American Idol" in 2008 -- this according to sources on the show.

Sources tell TMZ, Mariah -- who made her mentor cameo on "Idol" Season 7 -- was incredibly late for her shoot at the Beverly Hills Hotel," not very nice at all," and ridiculously nitpicky about tiny details.

In contrast, the same sources agree J.Lo was a pleasure -- "night and day" compared to Mariah. We're told J.Lo was all about business, in and out, no mess, no fuss.

4:55 PM PT -- Mariah Carey will actually make a record $18 MILLION for her first year on "American Idol" -- more than J.Lo made before her ... and more than Britney on "X Factor."

It's official ... Mariah Carey has joined "American Idol."

The announcement was made moments ago at the TV Critics Association Summer Press tour in Beverly Hills.

The 42-year-old singer is rumored to have signed a deal worth $12 million for her first year ... the same amount of $$$ Jennifer Lopez made during her first year with the show.

Rafael Nadal just delivered some GREAT NEWS to everyone who's not a Spaniard ... he's officially pulling out of the 2012 Olympics ... claiming he's "not in condition" to compete.

Jennifer Lopez is telling friends ... she HAS NOT made up her mind on her future with "American Idol" ... and WILL NOT make a decision until after she finishes her current concert tour with Enrique Iglesias.

There are reports Jennifer has already informed producers she's a no-go to return to the judge's table next season ... but sources close to J.Lo tell us the reports are absolutely not true.

We're told Jennifer wants to "see where things are in her life" when the concert ends.

Translation: If Jen's popularity is UP after the tour and she has more options, she's more likely to bounce off the show. If she's not ... "Idol" ain't a bad fallback gig.

It wouldn't be the first time J.Lo waited 'til the last minute -- last year, she held out until late August and finally gave in when producers reportedly agreed to fork over $20 mil for a 1-year deal.

Lopez appeared on the "Today" show this morning ... and said she's "torn" about the decision ... but notes, "I think it’s time for me to go.”

Missy Elliott isn't the only rich person drooling over the new $380,000 Lamborghini Aventador -- TMZ has learned, Real Madrid stud Karim Benzema recently rented one in Miami ... for $5,000 A DAY.

Sources tell TMZ, 24-year-old Benzo picked up the hot new Lambo (in white) from Lou La Vie Exotic Car Rental on June 28th -- and drove it around Miami for a week ... partying all over the city, hitting up the usual hot spots ... LIV ... Mansion ... you name it.

But he didn't drive THAT much -- we're told Benz only racked up 180 miles on the car in 7 days ... way below his daily 50-mile allowance.

All told, the rental cost $35,992.75.

FYI -- Benzema's one of the highest paid soccer players in the world. In 2009, he signed a 6-year deal with RM worth a reported $50 million.

The company that jacked Jessica Alba's name to promote its post-pregnancy slim down products has caved in by settling Jessica's lawsuit ... TMZ has learned.

Jessica sued Belly Bandit in October for using her name and image on its website. Among her gripes, Jessica claimed she never gave Belly Bandit permission to say, "Jessica Alba's #2 secret for a fast post pregnancy slim down!"

Sources tell us ... the company ponied up some cash and agreed to stop using Jessica as a marketing tool.
