NHL's Mike Bossy Reunited with Legendary Puck ... Thanks to Famous Rich Guy

Published | Updated

NHL God Mike Bossy just got a HUGE assist from a famous rich guy -- Gavin Maloof -- who shelled out a fortune to reunite Mike with a legendary hockey puck ... TMZ Sports has learned.

We broke the story, Bossy lost his famous "50 in 50 puck" -- which he used to score his 50th goal in 50 games back in '81 -- 30 years ago, after his daughter mistakenly gave it away.

The guy who ended up with the puck put it up on eBay back in May -- and when Maloof caught wind of the sale, he tells us he felt compelled to take action to help Bossy get it back.

"I said, 'We need to get this puck. It means a lot to Mr. Bossy,'" Maloof tells TMZ Sports.

"50 goals in 50 games. Only a handful of people have ever done that. I needed to buy this puck. I don't care how much it costs."

Long story short ... Maloof sealed the deal for just under $7,000 and immediately got on the horn to get in touch with Bossy so he could give it back.

"We invited Bossy to Las Vegas, put him up in the Bellagio and are taking him out tonight for a nice steak dinner."

When Bossy got to Sin City, he authenticated the puck and checked out the model for the hockey rink Maloof is hoping to build if the NHL green lights his plan to start a new franchise in Vegas.

As for Mike's daughter, Maloof says Bossy joked that she's finally out of the dog house -- "Once he got the puck back, he let her know that she's finally off the hook."

NHL Legend Mike Bossy My Super Rare Puck Is On eBay ...And I Want It Back!!

Published | Updated

NY Islanders Hall of Famer Mike Bossy is eyeing a legendary NHL puck on eBay, but refuses to pay a dime -- 'cause in his mind he's the rightful owner, and he's pissed someone's trying to sell it off.

Here's the deal ... in 1981, Bossy scored 50 goals in 50 games -- a feat only accomplished by 4 other players -- but about 30 years ago the treasured 50th puck slipped out of his hands.

We spoke to the eBay seller, Jake Jacobson ... a HUGE Islanders fan and former swim coach, who claims he ended up with the prized puck when Bossy's young daughter gave it to him as a thank you for her swimming lessons.

A couple years ago he contacted Bossy and offered to return it, but claims Bossy "didn't really seem interested." He says Bossy offered him a signed stick and that's about it. "He couldn't even meet. It just wasn't a good offer."

So, now Jacobson's gone the eBay route, and Bossy's ready to drop the gloves. The Hockey Hall of Fame and Museum -- which also wants the puck -- tells us, "Mike's position is, if the puck was mistakenly given to the seller, it's his rightful property. He shouldn't have to buy it back."

Bossy hasn't lawyered up, and Jacobson's pressing forward with the auction ... which ends Tuesday. Here's the thing ... his opening bid is $850, and he has ZERO offers.

He says he's not worried ... "I've gotten a few offers this week outside of the auction. I want a true Islanders fan to have the puck. Bossy had his chance to get it back."
