Ryan Leaf Matthew Perry Helped My Sobriety ... He Was 'Instrumental'
Ex-NFL quarterback Ryan Leaf believes he wouldn't be where he is today if it weren't for Matthew Perry ... crediting the late "Friends" star with playing a pivotal role in his sobriety.
Leaf -- who's approaching 12 years clean after battling drug and alcohol addiction in the past -- poured his heart out about his friend on his "Straight Line" podcast with PointsBet this week ... just days after 54-year-old Perry was found dead at his L.A.-area home.
The former No. 2-overall pick kicked off his tribute by stating Perry was "instrumental in my recovery" ... before going into detail about how the actor offered his support without hesitation over a decade ago.
"I got out of prison and when I got to Los Angeles, Matt put his arm around me immediately," Leaf said. "And he carried me for like, the first six months probably in Los Angeles, trying to learn how to be a sober person really in a public platform."
"I don't know if I’m here right now, being able to do stuff like this -- or anything -- if it weren’t for him, and him sharing his story and making me understand that you can be a guy in the public eye that everyone knows and still be sober, be humble and be about helping other people."
Leaf explained even as Perry dealt with his own drug, alcohol and mental health issues over the years, he didn't ever leave his side and continued to assist in the athlete's sobriety.
The 47-year-old said his takeaway from the tragedy is Perry was so much more than a TV star -- he was a guy who wanted to help others, and that's how he will remember him.
"There's a lot of people that I owe for the life I now have, get to live ... and he's certainly at the top of that," Leaf said.
"Matt, we'll miss you. I'll miss you. I hope you are finally at peace because I just don't know if you ever truly were."

MATTHEW PERRY Negative for Fentanyl & Meth ... Initial Tests Reveal
-
Exclusive
Matthew Perry's death was not the effect of a fentanyl or meth overdose, at least that's what initial tests indicate ... TMZ has learned.
Law enforcement sources tell TMZ investigators ran a less-in-depth test on Perry which revealed he did not have fentanyl or meth in his system. However, it's important to note, more in-depth tests are still being conducted as part of toxicology to analyze whether any other illegal drugs present in his blood -- and if the levels of any prescription meds were at harmful doses.
Those results will likely take anywhere from 4-6 months to be returned, and once all that data is gathered, the coroner will determine the cause and manner of death.
As we first reported, the prescription drugs found in Matthew's house were all prescribed to the actor for his various ailments, and stored in proper bottles.
If something illicit were to come back in his autopsy results, LAPD's Robbery Homicide Division would continue to investigate.
RHD's involvement initially had people scratching their heads, especially as there's currently NO evidence of foul play ... however, it's common for detectives from that division to take the lead on high-profile cases because of its experience and dedicated manpower.
As TMZ first reported, Matthew was found unresponsive in his hot tub Saturday at his home in the Pacific Palisades after playing pickleball for a couple hours earlier that day at Riviera Country Club.
While it appears he died from drowning, the Coroner will have the official word, once all the testing is complete.
The fact initial testing shows no overdose from meth or fentanyl -- a far too common killer in America's opioid epidemic -- falls in line with what people close to Matthew have told us ... that he was sober and "never happier."

French Montana Drug Search On My Plane in Colombia
French Montana's flying private, but his travel plans are still coming with headaches ... because he says authorities in Colombia searched his jet for narcotics.
The rapper says he was trying to fly out of the South American country Tuesday, but he was grounded at the airport while officers combed through his plane in search of cocaine.
French posted video of his encounter with law enforcement, and you see a handful of police officers going through the plane along with a drug-sniffing dog.
He's keeping a cool head about it, for the most part, even petting the K-9 in front of officers. He's also proclaiming his innocence ... saying la policia got the wrong idea about him.
Yes, he named his label (and mixtape series) Cokeboys, but French declares there's no contraband on his ride.
Despite the hard time from Colombian police, French says he's still got love for the country ... though he adds, "you don't have to do me like this!!!"
We're guessing he was eventually cleared for takeoff -- or he wouldn't have posted the video -- but his last IG story says, "I need bail!! 👀."

Matthew Perry Death Body Wasn't In Water Long Before Being Found ... Timing Adds To Tragedy

Matthew Perry's body wasn't in his hot tub for very long before he was found dead from an apparent drowning ... which adds a whole new layer to his tragic death.
Law enforcement sources tell TMZ … Matthew's body was not waterlogged when first responders arrived at his Pacific Palisades home and declared him dead at the scene.
Matthew was alone when he died -- he was home after playing pickleball earlier in the day Saturday at Riviera Country Club -- and it's fair to wonder what the outcome would have been if someone else was around, or if his assistant had gotten to his house sooner.
Remember ... Matthew got home from the country club and sent his assistant on an errand, and when the assistant returned home Matthew was unresponsive in the jacuzzi and the assistant called 911.
As we first reported, a search of MP's home did not turn up any illegal drugs ... but there were Rx drugs found in the house, including anti-depressants and anti-anxiety drugs.
Our sources say law enforcement also found a COPD drug in the house. COPD is short for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease ... and that drug is often used for people who have emphysema or chronic bronchitis.
Matthew was a smoker during his life, and now we're told law enforcement found Nicorette patches and Nicorette gum in the home ... so it seems Matthew was serious about quitting cigarettes and reclaiming his health.
The L.A. County Coroner has yet to determine an official cause of death. The toxicology results will take at least 6 weeks.
We discussed Matthew's legacy on the latest episode of Last Days, available on all podcast platforms.

Ed popped in during their set ... and the EDM duo welcomed him with open arms and free booze!
We're told ES fully enjoyed himself alongside the Chainsmokers, guzzling champagne and dancing his heart out as the music played. Of course, he treated everyone to some of his own talents -- crooning a few of his hits like "Shape of You," "Perfect," and "Bad Habits."

It also sounds like he supplemented Halsey's vocals when the boys played their song 'Closer' ... which must've been quite something for anyone lucky enough to catch this show.

Matthew Perry wanted to leave a lasting legacy beyond his fame as Chandler Bing ... in the form of a foundation dedicated to helping folks suffering from substance abuse.
Sources close to the late actor tell TMZ ... in the months leading up to his death, Matthew was in the early stages of creating the foundation ... akin to what Betty Ford did with her Foundation near Palm Springs.
While Matthew died before he could turn his dream into reality, our sources say several people close to him want to pursue the foundation in his honor ... and they're planning to move forward and get it up and running.
Remember ... Matthew was open about his history with substance abuse -- it's a big topic in his book -- and by all accounts he was sober, using pickleball as an outlet to help with his recovery.
Matthew wanted his legacy to be helping people who are struggling with substance abuse, and not his starring role on "Friends." The foundation could have done the trick.
It will be interesting to see how Matthew's vision for a foundation takes shape.

Matthew Perry's death will remain a mystery for now -- because officials are waiting for some key tests to be done before weighing in definitively on how he died.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office just published their findings on an initial autopsy of the late "Friends" actor -- and they're deferring his cause of death ... pending toxicology results and further investigation, which could take weeks to complete.
They're also not indicating the manner of death at this point ... although our sources have told us no foul play is suspected, and no illicit narcotics were found on the premises.
The only other notable detail from his autopsy report is that they note he died at his residence -- and that his body is now ready to be released to his family for burial/cremation. A probe into the circumstances of his death is underway with law enforcement.
TMZ broke the news ... first responders rushed to his property on a cardiac arrest call, and Matthew was found unresponsive in his hot tub ... this after an apparent drowning. The exact sequence of events is unclear, but he was eventually declared deceased on the scene.
Like we told you ... MP had played pickleball Saturday morning for a couple hours before returning home and sending his assistant on an errand. Sometime later, the assistant returned, discovered his boss ... and then called 911.
It goes without saying ... Matthew's passing sent shockwaves throughout Hollywood. Considering his history with substance abuse, there's been speculation that could be at play -- but so far, there's no indication that's in fact the case.
Medical professionals are going to wait to see what was in his system at the time of his death -- in the meantime, all his fans and loved ones can do is mourn.
No word yet on funeral plans ... but we imagine a major celebration of life is coming soon.

Matthew Perry's family is speaking out in the wake of his death -- and they're addressing both the suddenness of losing him ... and the love they've received in the aftermath.
The actor's family tells TMZ ... "We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of our beloved son and brother. Matthew brought so much joy to the world, both as an actor and a friend. You all meant so much to him and we appreciate the tremendous outpouring of love."
It's brief, but impactful ... especially considering how strongly folks have reacted to the news.
Of course, members of Matt's family were on the scene last night -- including his parents, Suzanne Morrison and John Bennett Perry -- pulling up to his property and looking sorrowful. Even his stepfather, Keith Morrison, arrived and was moving through police tape.
Perry's parents split while he was young ... and his mother went on to marry Keith and have children with him -- including 3 girls and 1 boy, all of whom are MP's half-siblings. Keith also has a son from a previous marriage.
While his mom and dad might've not been together through most of his life -- they displayed a united front Saturday night in front of paps ... this while investigators did their work.
Countless stars and showbiz types have been pouring on the tributes for Matt -- including some old "Friends" staffers ... mostly folks behind the scenes. We still haven't heard directly from any of his main costars ... who've all been radio silent since TMZ broke the news.

First responders who rushed to Matthew Perry's home Saturday did not find illegal drugs, but new information from law enforcement sources revealed there were numerous Rx drugs found in the house.
Our law enforcement sources tell TMZ ... authorities found anti-depressants, anti-anxiety drugs and a COPD drug in the house. COPD is short for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease -- that drug is often used for people who have emphysema or chronic bronchitis. Matthew was a smoker during his life. The L.A. County Coroner will conduct a toxicology exam to determine if any drugs were in Perry's system, but that could take months.
TMZ broke the story ... Matthew was found unresponsive in his jacuzzi Saturday afternoon, after playing 2 hours of pickleball at Riviera near his home in Pacific Palisades.
Sources tell TMZ ... Perry was in "good spirits" during the game. He was a pickleball fanatic ... even creating a pickleball shrine in his home.
After the pickleball game, we're told he had his assistant pick up a new iPhone for him, and prescription glasses, which the assistant did. Two hours later, the assistant returned to Perry's home and found him unresponsive in the jacuzzi and called 911.
Our sources say after calling 911, the assistant called Perry's mother and one sibling, along with an unrelated woman.
Perry was 54.
