Legendary NASCAR driver Greg Biffle is among the dead after a fiery plane crash in North Carolina ... TMZ Sports has confirmed.
The Cessna C550, a light private jet registered to a company owned by the star driver, crash landed near a runway at Statesville Regional Airport on Thursday morning, 26 minutes after the aircraft took off from the same air strip, killing the 55-year-old and others onboard.
The plane was originally scheduled to travel to Florida, but the Cessna seemed to turn back towards the airport just minutes into the flight.
Garrett Mitchell, aka YouTuber Cleetus McFarland, says Biffle and his family were traveling to spend the day with him, but tragically never made it.
Investigators think there could be a link between the campus mass shooting at Brown University and the MIT professor who was later killed at his home -- and law enforcement is now digging into a possible connection, TMZ has learned.
A federal law enforcement source tells TMZ … federal, state and local authorities are now looking into whether the fields of physics and engineering are a factor in the murders linking the two cases. No suspects have been identified or apprehended in either case.
This is a major shift in the investigation -- especially since FBI Boston Special Agent in Charge Ted Docks said Tuesday there didn’t appear to be any connection between the two shootings.

Sarah looks mostly unrecognizable as Aileen in these shots ... she's dyed her hair and she's walking around a film set in Los Angeles wearing a bathrobe, undershirt, sweats, and slippers.
A private jet reportedly crashed in North Carolina Thursday morning, leaving multiple people dead.
According to local news station WBTV, the plane -- a Cessna C550 -- exploded in a massive fireball after crashing at Statesville Regional Airport, about 50 miles north of Charlotte.
The FAA confirmed the plane went down while attempting to land at approximately 10:20 AM ET.
Business records indicate the jet was owned by a company affiliated with retired NASCAR driver Greg Biffle, WBTV reports. Local news outlets are reporting Biffle and his wife died in the crash, citing social media posts from a colleague and from one of his brands ... TMZ is working to confirm.

David Harbour's taking a step back from the spotlight, it seems ... skipping a big "Stranger Things" event after a truly bizarre incident where he allegedly stole a fan's hat.
The actor was initially supposed to attend the "Stranger Things: The Final Season Celebration" at New York City's Paley Center Thursday ... however, he's no longer listed as an attendee on the event's website.
A rep for the Paley Center told People he can't make it due to a "scheduling conflict."
The timing of the cancellation may raise some eyebrows among fans ... given Harbour's seemingly been in the news for all the wrong reasons over the past few months.

The woman made famous in a drunken San Francisco restaurant fiasco put up one helluva fight with staff before getting face-planted ... and she's only 5 feet tall, new dispatch audio reveals.
TMZ just obtained the audio from Broadcastify, which gives another window into what happened Saturday night ... when Shireen Afkari got into a battle with workers at Patxi's Pizza. Video gone viral shows a wasted Afkari getting tossed out of the joint with her boyfriend.
NEW: Drunk female customer attacks bar staff outside trendy San Francisco restaurant co-owned by celebrity chef Joey Altman
The unidentified couple had been cut off for being drunk and rude
In the audio, the dispatcher describes Afkari as a 5-foot-tall woman in her late 20s or early 30s, trying to get physical with the bar staff. But, as you know from the video, Afkari didn't "try" to get physical -- the pint-sized patron went all WWE on the workers, even pulling the hair of one employee.

Bonjour, everyone -- or should we say buongiorno! We know you're probably binging the fifth season of "Emily In Paris," which dropped today, and we figured we'd share some of our favorite behind-the-scenes snaps from the show's cast and crew!
ICYMI ... Emily, played by Lily Collins, decided to ditch the City of Lights for the sunshine and splendor of Rome at the end of the last season .. and her decision makes for some really juicy drama in Season 5!
Then again, the show is still called "Emily In Paris," so it'd be kind of weird not to shoot the series in the French capital -- and we don't think Collins or her costar, Ashley Park, could lose their soft spot for its landmarks, like the Eiffel Tower.
Late "Pulp Fiction" villain Peter Greene had injuries on his body when he was found dead in his New York City apartment last week ... and authorities are still trying to figure out what caused the injuries, and what led to his death.
Law enforcement sources tell TMZ ... the actor's body was found with "some injuries but it's undetermined what caused the injuries."
We're told the medical examiner is still trying to determine a cause and manner of death ... and at this point it remains unclear if Peter's death is the result of homicide, suicide, drugs, or something else.
Jeffrey Epstein seemed to have a penchant for classic literature with a pedophile plot ... because new photos connected to him show quotes from the controversial novel "Lolita" scrawled on a female's body.
The Congressional House Oversight Committee released more photos from the Epstein Files on Thursday ... including several that capture glimpses of an unidentified female's skin vandalized with black pen strokes.
The black ink covers part of her chest, back, foot and neck ... and, upon further inspection, all of the phrases are quotes from Vladimir Nabokov's novel "Lolita" -- a book about a man's sexual obsession with an underage girl. The late director Stanley Kubrick turned the novel into a movie by the same name, starring James Mason and Sue Lyon.
Mustard is on the beat and on his ex-wife Chanel Thierry's case, claiming she's been blasting him on social media ... and now he's asking a judge to give him full legal custody of their kids over it.
In court documents, obtained by TMZ, Mustard -- whose real name is Dijon McFarlane -- says he wants sole legal custody of his and Chanel's three children -- Kiylan, 13, Kauner, 10, and Kody, 6.
The ex-couple shared legal custody of the kids under the previous order. At the time, the judge also specifically prohibited both of them from speaking in a "negative, disrespectful, or derogatory manner to or about the other" in their children's presence or "within hearing distance of the child."
In new court papers filed by attorney Samantha Spector, Mustard alleges Chanel violated that order by making disparaging social media postings about him ... including Chanel posting to Threads on October 26, writing, "Dijon I know you are reading this, I'm so sick of your s***. You suck."
"The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants" became ground zero for panicked parents testing their cover-your-kids'-eyes reflexes ... 'cause Ice Spice rolled in to the family-friendly affair practically naked!
The rapper -- who has a role in the flick and contributed the original song "Big Guy" -- went shockingly bold at the NYC premiere for the PG-rated movie Wednesday, rocking a sheer lace getup that left little to the imagination, flashing her thong and plenty of bare cheek.
Ice was posing up a storm in front of that bright, bubbly SpongeBob backdrop ... a wild juxtaposition, considering this was a kids’ movie premiere with families everywhere.
