How 'Clueless' Ended Up As A Movie ... After Being Developed For TV

Published | Updated

We all know "Clueless" made quite the impact when it was released in theaters in 1995, and its legacy was cemented after it began being featured in heavy rotation on television in the years following its debut.

The funny thing is, while the Alicia Silverstone-starring movie actually started out as a TV project ... it ended up being adapted for the small screen after the movie came out!

We're going to check out how the iconic flick's humble origins led it to the big screen ... and see what's going on with the current plans to take Cher Horowitz back to television.

'Clueless' Was Shopped Around Before It Landed At Paramount

In the years before Horowitz captured the eyes of audiences with her yellow plaid skirt and matching jacket -- writer/director Amy Heckerling had envisioned the character serving as the lead of a television show.

The filmmaker originally envisioned the project -- which went through various titles including "No Worries" and "I Was A Teenage Teenager" -- as a show focused on a group of popular California high schoolers and a perennially positive lead character, according to Vanity Fair.

Heckerling told the outlet her television project was put into turnaround, after which her agent at the time encouraged her to reframe "Clueless" as a movie.

She recalled while her project was originally developed for Fox TV, it was later bought by Fox's movie division ... after which its team tried shopping it around to various producers --although it ended up being rejected numerous times.

After the project was eventually picked up by producer Scott Rudin, "Clueless" ended up in the hands of Paramount Pictures ... and the rest is history.

Silverstone Didn't Stick Around After The Movie Premiered

Following the widespread success of "Clueless," studio execs saw the potential for a spinoff series, and a television show with the same name made its debut in 1996.

Several cast members from the original movie -- including Stacey Dash, Donald Faison and Wallace Shawn -- returned to reprise their roles.

The thing is, Silverstone didn't stick around for the show, and the part of Horowitz was filled by Rachel Blanchard.

The program ran for a single season on ABC before it switched over to the now-defunct UPN for its remaining two seasons.

However, viewership declined throughout the show's run, and the plug was pulled on the project in 1999.

'Clueless' Is Making Its Way Back To Fans

The story of "Clueless" didn't stop after the show got cancelled, as a new television show based on the feature was revealed to have been in development in 2020, per The Hollywood Reporter.

The project would have focused on Dash's character, Dionne Davenport, navigating the pressures of becoming the new queen bee of her high school, while investigating the sudden disappearance of Horowitz.

However, the planned show never made it off the ground, and the project was shut down in 2021.

The story of "Clueless" doesn't stop there, though -- another television spinoff was in the works in April 2025, and according to Variety, Silverstone's coming back to play Horowitz again.

By the way, Heckerling's set to return as an executive producer for that one ... but we're gonna have to wait for a while to get plot details, as they're being kept under wraps for now.

How Sara Sampaio Went From Supermodel To Actress

Published | Updated

Sara Sampaio made quite the impression on fans while filling the role of Lex Luthor's girlfriend, Eve Teschmacher, in the new "Superman" film, which debuted in July 2025.

The thing is, the actress is no stranger to spending time in front of the cameras, as she's made a name for herself as a model walking for some of the biggest brands out there.

We're going to check out how the performer made her way from the fashion industry to the entertainment industry -- and what she's got planned for her future.

Sara Started Out In The Modeling Industry

Sampaio began her career in fashion at the age of 16, when she won a contest in her home country of Portugal to become the face of a hair brand, according to Vogue Australia.

She subsequently signed with a modeling agency, and she first appeared in a Victoria's Secret catalog in 2011.

Sampaio eventually earned the title of Victoria's Secret Angel in 2015, two years after she first walked in the brand's annual fashion show ... and she held the title until 2021.

She's since appeared on the cover of numerous publications, including Nylon, Harper's Bazaar Arabia and Vogue Portugal.

She Always Had Acting Aspirations

Although Sampaio's spent the majority of her professional life in the modeling industry, she's been open about her desire to establish herself as an actress.

While the model originally wanted to study drama during her university years, she told Nylon her "parents were like, 'Just go take a normal degree and then we can do that on the side.'"

The fashion industry figure has appeared in a handful of films and shows so far in her career, mostly filling supporting roles.

Sampaio's also been in several music videos for various artists, including Nick Jonas and Kanye West.

The Model Did The Most While Preparing To Appear In 'Superman'

The model -- who moved to Los Angeles in 2018 to pursue her acting dreams -- saw her luck change in 2023 when she was cast as Teschmacher.

Sampaio told Nylon she closely identified with her character -- an attractive secretary who has more going on behind her good looks than many of her contemporaries realize -- and she said taking on the role felt "therapeutic."

She said her modeling work had inadvertently prepared her for her acting career, in the sense that she'd become comfortable being in front of the camera.

She quipped, after having to wear lingerie in front of hundreds of people, "there's not much left to be ashamed of."

Her Experience On Set Solidified Her Dedication To Acting

Sampaio's also spoken about how "Superman" has changed her outlook on her professional life in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

The fashion industry personality talked about her experience on set during her sit-down, and said the moment she recited her first line became the point "where I knew I wanted to do this for the rest of my life."

She admitted she felt as if modeling "wouldn’t fulfill me" in the long run, and a switch to acting "was always in the back of my mind."

Sampaio added, while she's "so thankful for the opportunity that I had with modeling," she's very enthusiastic about the prospect of more acting in the future.
