It happened ... *NSYNC JUST PERFORMED ON STAGE ... but if you blinked you might have missed it.

Justin Timberlake, Lance Bass, J.C. Chasez, Chris Kirkpatrick and Joey Fatone performed together at the VMAs for the first time since 2003 ... singing a tiny bit of "Bye, Bye, Bye" during JT's giant solo number.

Then they too went bye, bye, bye. So we gotta ask ...

Selena Gomez walked the red carpet at the MTV VMAs moments ago ... sadly half her dress got lost on the way over.

No one bothered to look for it.

MTV rounded up the troops to host an awards show to pay homage to something called a "music video" ... something that hasn't been seen on MTV in a very, very long time.

Still, the stars need an excuse to get together and rock out in wild outfits ... and TMZ has the photos of the craziness as it goes down outside the show!

With the 2013 MTV VMAs just hours away, take a stroll down memory lane and check out all of the wildest looks from last year's gathering.

It's happening ... it's really, really happening ... *NSYNC is reuniting on the VMA stage -- this according to the band's official Twitter.

It's kind of ironic ... Twitter didn't even exist when *NSYNC was famous -- but that didn't stop the boy band from all-but-confirming their HIGHLY anticipated MTV performance in 140 characters or less, writing, "mic check, mic check one ... two ... is this thing on?!"

Joey Fatone has arrived to New York ... where he's rumored to reunite with *NSYNC at the MTV VMAs this weekend ... but when we asked him about it, he seemed to be LYING like a rug.

Don't get us wrong ... he totally denied being in NYC for the alleged performance. But c'mon Joey ...

Now we're no Columbo ... but we think we know when someone's playing games with our heart (wrong band, but you get the idea).

So, we gotta ask ...

"Criminal Minds" star Thomas Gibson wasn't pulling a fast one on his wife by conducting an online relationship with a shameless catfisher -- sources tell TMZ, the actor and his wife have been separated for years.

Sources close to the couple tell us, Gibson and his estranged wife Christine Gibson still live together for the sake of their children, but they've been separated for 2-and-a-half years ... six months before Thomas started messing around with one of his Twitter fans.

As we reported, Gibson and the woman -- who catfished him by posing as a porn star -- carried on a heated relationship for two years before Gibson discovered the entire thing was a sham ... he even sent her a sexy hot tub video (it's hilarious).

Bottom line: Gibson might be a sucker ... but he's no cheater.

Rob Dyrdek is on a mission ... a greasy, stomach-filling, alcohol-absorbing mission ... to find the greatest drunk munchie chef in the country. And it's gonna be awesome.

Dyrdek was leaving Boa Steakhouse on Sunset Blvd. last night when he told us all about his upcoming MTV show "Snackdown" -- the hunt for a Wolfgang I'm-So-Pucked-Up-Right-Now.

"If you appreciate late night random drunk snacking on a gourmet level, that's what 'Snackdown' is all about."

For example -- Pizza with nachos ... throw in some chocolate syrup ... and maybe some ice cream. Boom. BRILLIANT.

"Teen Mom" star Jenelle Evans can't manage to stay out of jail ... even after copping a plea deal to stay out of jail.

Jenelle was in court Monday for uber-serious drug charges ... including heroin and illegal Percocet possession. A drug paraphernalia charge was added for good measure, because cops say they found wrapping papers and a pipe.

Jenelle copped a deal with prosecutors and pled guilty to the paraphernalia charge. In exchange the other charges were dropped. She was slapped with 18 months unsupervised probation ... but no jail time.

That is, until the judge had her randomly drug tested Monday morning.

Jenelle's attorney tells TMZ ... the MTV star tested positive for marijuana and the judge sent her to the slammer for 48 hours.

Here's the good news ... It takes more than a few days in the pokey to wipe that stupid smirk off her face ... just check out her latest mug (above).

Sean Sasser -- who famously dated "Real World" star and AIDS activist Pedro Zamora back in the '90s -- has died after batting a rare form of lung cancer.

Sasser frequently appeared on MTV's "The Real World: San Francisco" ... and participated in a commitment ceremony with Pedro, before Zamora passed away from an AIDS-related illness in 1994. Sasser was HIV positive.

Judd Winick -- who also appeared on the show with Sean and Pedro -- broke the news of Sean's passing on his Twitter page Tuesday night ... saying:

"Our friend Sean Sasser has died. Our love goes out to his family & husband Michael. We will miss u so much."

Sasser was 44.

The dreaded high-waisted bikini strikes again!!! Just days after Taylor Swift terrified the nation with some grandma's dusty old swim-diaper ... Snooki subjected her OWN DEFENSELESS CHILD to the horrific ensemble.

The pics were snapped Monday on the beach in Seaside Heights -- aka "Jersey Shore" mecca -- and luckily, Snooki's baby daddy Jionni LaValle was there to distract 11-month-old Lorenzo for long enough that he didn't go blind.

Bam Margera was arrested in Iceland yesterday ... over a rental car he DESTROYED last year and never paid for, this according to the "Jackass" star himself.

It's a pretty bizarre story ... basically, Bam allegedly rented a Toyota Landcruiser from Hertz when he visited the country back in 2012. According to officials, Bam returned the car in TERRIBLE shape 5 days after the rental period was over -- but never paid for the damage, fees and other costs associated with the ride. Then, he left the country ...

So, when Margera returned to Iceland yesterday ... he was arrested upon arrival at the Keflavik Airport.

Bam eventually remedied the situation (after cutting a huge check) -- and was released from custody.

But the best part of the saga was the incredible, probably-drunken post-arrest interview he gave to a Icelandic newssite Visir.is ... in which he ADMITS to trashing the hell out of the car.

"I kicked the door in because I was pissed one night ... and then there was a scratch over there that they had to replace the whole panel for," Bam said.

There's more -- "The back got hit, and then there was … I've been painting like with oil paints so oil paints get everywhere so there was like blue paint all over the inside of the car."

Former "Real World" d-bag Puck can't seem to stay out of jail ... he was just arrested again on charges of domestic violence, TMZ has learned.

Puck -- real name David Rainey -- was popped on July 13th in L.A. and charged with inflicting bodily injury on a woman who cops say is a "spouse, former spouse, cohabitant or former cohabitant" of Puck (a.k.a. domestic violence). He was also charged with trying to stop the woman from reporting it.

Specifically, law enforcement sources tell us ... Puck and the woman got into a physical altercation, but when she tried to call the police ... Puck allegedly grabbed the phone away and hung it up.

He's currently behind bars. Bail is set for $50,000.

Farrah Abraham has money coming out of her ass ... she's raked in sex tape royalties totaling more than $100k in just 2 months!

TMZ broke the story ... the "Teen Mom" turned porn star inked a 6-figure upfront deal with Vivid to sell the XXX tape she shot with James Deen -- "Backdoor Teen Mom."

TMZ has obtained Farrah's first royalty check -- a percentage of profits she receives from sales. So prepare yourself ... after two months, Farrah amassed $119,576.39!!!!

You may recall ... Farah told us on "TMZ Live" ... she's already a millionaire.

Farrah Abraham has NO IDEA who Trayvon Martin is -- but she thinks Trayvon is a woman she may have met ... because Farrah Abraham is an idiot.

"Backdoor Teen Mom" made the unbelievably stupid comments on the "Matty P's Radio Happy Hour" show ... when the host asked how she felt about the Trayvon situation.

"I feel like I've met her or something," Farrah blurted out of her stupid mouth ... adding, "It sounds so familiar ... I don't know what she is so I can't picture the person with the name right now."

Riff Raff -- the rapper and former MTV reality star -- says he's suing the people responsible for the movie "Spring Breakers" for $8 to $10 MILLION ... because he believes he was the basis for one of the characters.

Basically, Riff believes James Franco based his character Alien (a white rapper/gangster with cornrows and gold teeth) after himself ... and therefore he should get a bag full of cash for his troubles.

On his way out of AV Club in Hollywood last night, Riff offered up the logic behind his case ... and it's glorious:

"It's like if I have a front yard. And you're planting soil and you're planting trees and building peaches and houses and selling parking lots on my property ... then I deserve to be compensated for some portion of that money."
