Patriots' Jakobi Meyers I Was 'Trying To Be The Hero' ... On Game Losing Lateral
"I was trying to be a hero, I guess."
That's Jakobi Meyers explaining his actions on the final play of the Patriots game Sunday -- that turned into one of the most shocking endings in NFL history.
ICYMI, the Patriots and the Las Vegas Raiders were tied, three seconds away from overtime ... when New England decided to run a draw play instead of taking a knee.
Pats' RB Rhamondre Stevenson lateralled the ball to Meyers, who shockingly attempted to throw a long lateral back to Mac Jones ... but was intercepted by Raiders' Chandler Jones, who proceeded to run over Mac, on the way to a 48-yard game-winning touchdown.
"This might be one of the dumbest teams I've ever seen."

After the game, Meyers -- who signed with Pats in 2019 -- did his best to explain his head-scratching move.
"Just trying to do too much," the 26-year-old said about his part in the final play, "Trying to be a hero, I guess."
"I ain't see dude back there, tried throwing the ball. Like I said, I just was doing too much. I should've went down with the ball.”
An emotional Jakobi Meyers said he was “trying to do too much and trying to be a hero” on the final play. Said he knew the score was tied and the play didn’t call for a lateral. pic.twitter.com/KiOIjKOqcR
— Zack Cox (@ZackCoxNESN) December 19, 2022 @ZackCoxNESN
Meyers flatly said the lateral wasn't part of the plan (plan was to run the ball and get to OT) ... but he (believed he) saw Mac open.
"I didn't see Chandler Jones at the time," Meyers said.
"Thought [Mac Jones] was open, tried to give it to him and let him try and make a play with it. But the score was tied, so like I've said, I should’ve went down."
The WR says he'll learn from this costly mistake and do better from here on out.
FWIW, respect to Meyers for standing there and answering questions after the worst football moment of his career.
The Patriots are still in the playoff hunt -- thanks to some other bubble teams losing -- but the loss didn't help, and neither will the Cincinnati Bengals coming into town Saturday.
Of course, this isn't the first time the Patriots have lost in seemingly impossible ways. The "Miracle in Miami" happened 4 years ago this December.

TMZ Sports has learned the Indy star wanted to be decked out for the Colts' game against the Vikings on Saturday ... and reached out to cleat artist Rodney Jackson to get some Xmas-themed feet heat made.
Jackson -- who's been Rodgers' go-to shoe guy for several seasons -- tells us they both decided to go with the two most iconic Christmas characters for the spikes ... and they came out great.
The left cleat, featuring Santa, is wrapped in red velvet with white fur all over it.
The right shoe -- which comes with jingle bells -- has Rudolph's face painted on the toe with the bonus of a very shiny nose that lights up.
It wasn't an easy project ... Jackson told us it took two days to put the Nike cleats together -- from wiring the lights into the spikes to making Santa's beard on his own.
Happy holidays, indeed!

Miami Redhawks Honoring Mike Leach ... Awesome Xbones Helmet Decal At Bahamas Bowl
Despite having no ties to Mike Leach, the Miami Redhawks are still paying homage to the late coach in an awesome way -- putting huge decals featuring crossbones on the backs of their helmets on Friday.
The school unveiled the tribute at the Bahamas Bowl against the UAB Blazers ... showing off a big, black sticker that has Leach's name on it with a pirate-themed MAC logo.
Leach, of course, was nicknamed "The Pirate" due to his obsession with sea robbers ... and on the Miami decal, they added another tribute to that by putting the hashtag "#FlyTheFlag" at the bottom.
The ode is particularly meaningful considering Leach never coached at Miami -- nor in the MAC ... which shows just how far his coaching genius reached during his life.
As we previously reported, the former Mississippi State football head coach died on Monday ... due to complications from a heart condition.
He was just 61 years old.

Pop Warner Investigating Alleged Racial Slurs ... Team Denies N-Word Use
-
Exclusive

2:45 PM PT -- Local Pop Warner officials tell TMZ Sports an investigation into the incident is underway ... and "all information" is being reviewed in preparation for a hearing on the matter.
Rocky Mountain Pop Warner president Michael Stearns also notes the org. hired an audio specialist to enhance the audio of the clip ... and they determined the man in question did not use a racial slur. Instead, they claim he said "m*****s."
"This word is equally concerning to Rocky Mountain Pop Warner as there is no place for any type of derogatory and/or harassing language to be used within Pop Warner. All matters will be reviewed and actions taken appropriately by our league."
9:21 AM PT -- Zeric Martinez -- the Mountain Lions' former president and coaching volunteer -- says he spoke with several witnesses present at the time of the altercation, and they are adamant no racial slurs were said during the exchange.
Witnesses claim the man in the video yelled an offensive term for little people in response to a similar comment made by a Hamden coach ... but deny the man in the video said anything racially charged.
Pop Warner has launched an investigation into a disgusting incident following a tournament game ... in which coaches were allegedly targeted with racial slurs by a man affiliated with the opposing team.
It all went down hours after the Hamden Hurricanes (CT) beat the Highlands Ranch Mountain Lions (CO) in the Div. 2 12U quarterfinals of the Pop Warner National Championships on Dec. 3 ... when coaches on both teams ran into each other at the hotel they were staying at in Orlando.
In the footage, obtained by TMZ Sports, the Hamden coaches are clearly trying to distance themselves from the Highlands Ranch staffers ... with one man explaining they were told by the "higher ups" to avoid any interaction.
Sources tell us the reason behind the tense interaction was due to coaches and fans of Highlands Ranch allegedly yelling racially charged words at Hamden, a team that consists of mostly Black players, throughout the game.
In the video, a Highlands Ranch coach continues to try to talk to adults with Hamden ... but they repeatedly say they aren't interested in talking, as they "have more s*** to lose."
Eventually, Hamden leaves the area ... and that's when a man -- who we're told is affiliated with the Highlands Ranch team -- hurled out the racial slurs, according to sources ... who claim he referred to them as "f***ing n*****s."
Pop Warner released a statement to TMZ Sports ... saying, "The disturbing behavior shown in the video is inconsistent with our code of conduct and the expectations we have of our adult volunteers."
The org. says it will conduct an investigative hearing on the matter next week ... and if the person in the video is, in fact, affiliated with a PW team, they will face discipline -- including suspension.
"One thing is clear: the abhorrent conduct and language exhibited in this video are unacceptable," Pop Warner added. "Our organization is committed to a safe, inclusive, and positive environment for all young people and their families."
"No one should ever encounter this kind of behavior. We will take all measures necessary to address the situation."

Aqib Talib Sued For Wrongful Death ... After Fatal Shooting At Youth Football Game
-

Ex-NFL star Aqib Talib has just been sued ... after he allegedly helped incite an altercation that led to a fatal shooting at a youth football game back in August.
Michael Hickmon's family filed the lawsuit in Dallas County on Tuesday ... claiming the actions of Talib and his brother, Yaqub Talib, at a Big XII Youth Sports League event ultimately led to Hickmon's tragic death on Aug. 13.
According to the suit, Hickmon was coaching the Dragons Elite Academy 9-and-under youth football team against the Talibs' North Dallas United Bobcats.
Hickmon's family says the game was contentious -- claiming several calls had tensions running "high" throughout the contest.
At one point, according to Hickmon's family, the Dragons scored a touchdown following a Bobcats' taunting penalty -- and the Talibs were so upset about it, they ended the game.
The plaintiffs claim in the suit that Hickmon then went to retrieve the game ball -- but was "confronted" by Aqib, who allegedly threw a punch.
"Surprised and outnumbered," the Hickmon family said in the suit, "Hickmon defensively backpedaled."
The family went on to say in the lawsuit that Yaqub then pulled out a handgun and fired five shots -- striking Hickmon with several bullets.
Hickmon later died at a local hospital.
The Hickmon family is suing the Talibs and others for wrongful death ... asking for unspecified damages.
As we previously reported, Yaqub was arrested and later charged with murder. 36-year-old Aqib, meanwhile, has not been charged with any crimes.
Aqib's attorney released a statement following it all in August ... saying, "Aqib was present when this unfortunate incident occurred and is very distraught and devastated over this terrible loss of life. He would like to convey his condolences to the family of the victim and to everyone who witnessed this unfortunate tragedy."
The ex-Denver Broncos star has yet to publicly comment on the suit.

Rob Gronkowski Brady Will Kill It As FOX Sports Analyst ... But Can Play 'Forever'
There's no doubt in Rob Gronkowski's mind that Tom Brady will be a great football analyst for FOX Sports when he decides to hang up his cleats -- keyword being when, 'cause Gronk thinks Tom can play "forever."
Gronk was leaving dinner at Craig's in L.A. Wednesday night ... when he was asked how he believes Brady will fare behind a mic when he's finally done playing.
"Tom's gonna kill it," Gronk said. "He knows football like no other. He can break down any player at any time. He'll just present it to the screen, showing the strength and weaknesses. He can talk football like no other."
Rob, who won four Super Bowls with TB12 (3 in New England, 1 in Tampa), was then asked when 45-year-old Brady would retire.
"That dude's a beast. He can go forever," Gronk said, before joking Tom could play to 68.
Brady briefly retired this past off-season, before returning to the Bucs. Unfortunately, TB12 and Tampa Bay haven't been having the season they imagined ... and Tom's future is uncertain.
Of course, the on-the-field struggles come amid off-the-field drama ... leading many to call on the 7x Super Bowl champ to retire at season's end.
If Brady does decide to retire (again), the G.O.A.T., who signed a lucrative $375 million contract with FOX Sports to be their lead analyst, will transition to the broadcast booth.
Not all players make that transition smoothly, but Gronk clearly believes Tom will have no issues!

UVA's Mike Hollins Shooting Survivor Says Campus Gunman Was Silent ... Looked 'Normal' Earlier
UVA running back Mike Hollins says he isn't sure why a gunman opened fire on him and three other football players last month ... explaining this week the shooter was silent during his killing spree -- and had looked "normal" earlier in the day.
Hollins sat down with Michael Strahan on "Good Morning America" ... and gave some insight into the shooter's mindset -- while walking the ex-NFL star through how he was able to survive the terrifying Nov. 13 tragedy.
Hollins said he initially heard the gunshots ring out on the bus as it made its return to UVA's campus following a class field trip ... and he got off in a hurry -- unharmed.
But, he told Strahan that when he realized others weren't following him, he ran back in ... and that's when he said he locked eyes with suspected shooter Christopher Darnell Jones Jr.
"It was just a cold look," Hollins said, adding that the man said "nothing at all" to him. "It was, I don't know, it was just like a numb look."
Hollins said he turned to run again, and was shot in the back.
The football player said he didn't know Jones Jr. -- a former walk-on on the UVA football team -- "at all" ... and added that the guy had given him no indication that was upset earlier in the day.
"I had saw him that morning before we got on the bus," Hollins said. "He was looking normal to me."
Hollins suffered serious injuries in the shooting -- and required multiple surgeries to fix the damage. He told Strahan it wasn't until he came out of his initial surgery two days after the incident that he learned of the deaths of his teammates, D'Sean Perry, Lavel Davis and Devin Chandler.
"I've never cried like that before," he said.
Hollins is expected to make a full recovery.
Jones Jr., meanwhile, has since been hit with six criminal charges, including three counts of second-degree murder. He's due in court for another hearing in the case in March.

Aaron Rodgers Praises Ayahuasca Again ... It Alleviated My Fear Of Death
Aaron Rodgers is shouting out ayahuasca again ... this time, crediting the psychoactive tea for alleviating his "major fear of death."
The Green Bay Packers quarterback -- who previously said his use of ayahuasca helped lead to his two MVP seasons in 2020 and 2021 -- told Pat McAfee on Tuesday that the psychedelic trip he got from the brew made him much more comfortable with his mortality.
The 39-year-old explained ... while growing up as a young teenager during Y2K, he had developed a phobia of not accomplishing certain life goals before ultimately passing.
But, he told McAfee and A.J. Hawk on The Pat McAfee Show that ayahuasca changed all of that for him.
"I definitely had a fear of death," he said. "And ayahuasca, and psilocybin actually, really helped me with that and relieved a lot of the stress around the idea of needing to accomplish things before I actually die."
8/3/22
Rodgers said the trip forced him to "see the other side" ... which made "the idea of death more of a passage and less of an ending. More of just kind of the next chapter of life."
Rodgers initially consumed the ayahuasca during a 2020 trip to South America ... and told Aubrey Marcus in August that it was "a magical experience."
Best celebration of season. Thank you Twitter for pointing out it’s Ayahuasca pic.twitter.com/KPna2bMLoM

Deion Sanders may be heading to Colorado, but his love for Jackson State still seemingly runs deep -- Coach Prime congratulated JSU's new head coach, T.C. Taylor, for landing the coveted job!
The NFL Hall of Famer shared an emotional video showing the moment Taylor was named the new head coach -- and the players went absolutely wild!
"Congratulations [Coach Taylor] on being the new [Jackson State football] head coach!" Sanders wrote on Instagram. "You deserve it! Love ya and appreciate u my brother. #CoachPrime."
"It has been a dream of mine to be a coach here," Taylor told his players. "But to be a head coach with some of the names that have been through here: W.C. Gorden, James Carson, and Coach Prime. Those are big shoes to fill, but I am excited."
Taylor was a standout wide receiver for the Tigers during his playing days. During his senior year, he broke the JSU single-season record with 84 receptions ... totaling 1,234 yards and 11 TDs.
T.C. graduated from Jackson State in 2005 ... and in 2019, he reunited with the Tigers, joining JSU's coaching staff, where he coached tight ends and wide receivers until last year.
After Deion announced he was leaving, the NFL legend advocated for Taylor ... saying he was the guy he'd hire if the decision were up to him.
Taylor is following a tough act at JSU ... in three years with Jackson State, Deion led the Tigers to a 27-5 record and back-to-back SWAC championships.
Sanders is also taking some of his best players, including his son, star JSU QB Shedeur Sanders with him to Colorado ... meaning Taylor will have to recruit or develop a new QB.
It likely won't be easy, but most everyone, including Deion, believes T.C. is the man for the job. Congrats, coach!

Mississippi St. Playing In Bowl Game Vs. Illinois ... Despite Mike Leach's Death
Mississippi State will not pull out of its bowl game against Illinois despite Mike Leach's death ... the school's interim AD just said the Bulldogs will play in the postseason contest -- because, "We all know that's what Coach Leach would want."
Bracky Brett, who took over MSU's AD reins in October, told ESPN on Tuesday the football team's players are "100%" ready to play in the ReliaQuest Bowl on Jan. 2 ... and do "what Coach Leach would expect them to do."
"It's what we should do," Brett added.
Leach, MSU's head coach since 2020, tragically passed away on Monday night after suffering a medical emergency on Sunday. He was 61 years old.
The school announced following Leach's initial hospitalization that defensive coordinator Zach Arnett would fill in for the legend ... and Brett said Tuesday that plan will continue against the Fighting Illini after Leach's death.
"Coach Arnett has made it clear that we're going to finish what we started," Brett said, "and honor Coach Leach."
The game will go down in Tampa at Raymond James Stadium ... where, of course, Leach (nicknamed The Pirate) would have felt right at home -- something not lost on Brett.
"It's only fitting that we play this game," he said, "and honor Coach Leach in a stadium that has a pirate ship."

Patriots' DeVante Parker Rips NFL Over Head Injury ... 'Get On Y'alls F***in' Jobs!!!'

New England Patriots wide receiver DeVante Parker is going OFF on the NFL ... saying officials need to "get on y'alls f***in' jobs" and take care of players who may have suffered head injuries during games.
Parker appeared dazed after getting hit with four minutes left in the first quarter of the Pats' "Monday Night Football" game against the Arizona Cardinals ... and teammate Nelson Agholor had to beg the referees to pause the contest so the veteran wideout could get checked out.
The NFL Players' Association is currently investigating why the league's concussion spotter didn't immediately stop the game ... especially considering the new protocols put in place following the handling of Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa's head injuries earlier this season.
A failure by the concussion spotter. DeVante Parker could not stand up straight after hitting the ground. Nelson Agholor took a knee and was flailing desperately to try to get the play stopped for Parker. pic.twitter.com/TtjfOqyEbH
— Michael Hurley (@michaelFhurley) December 13, 2022 @michaelFhurley
Parker was visibly wobbly after he made the 10-yard catch -- he actually bumped into teammate Cole Strange as he tried to walk.
Parker thanked Agholor for looking out for him ... and it was for good reason -- #1 didn't return to the game after being examined by the medical staff.
The Pats are now dealing with a short receiving core ... as Jakobi Meyers also missed Monday's game due to a concussion.
New England was still able to come out on top ... winning 27-13.

Things have gone from bad to worse for the Arizona Cardinals -- Kyler Murray did, in fact, tear his ACL on "Monday Night Football" against the Patriots ... and the star quarterback's season is now over.
The signal caller suffered the non-contact injury on the third play of the game ... and ESPN's Adam Schefter confirmed the tough news just minutes ago.
Prayers up to Kyler Murray with what appears to be a non-contact injury on this play 🙏 pic.twitter.com/TMqdNJ7QhP
— ClutchPoints (@ClutchPointsApp) December 13, 2022 @ClutchPointsApp
The injury happened when Kyler escaped out of the pocket and went to plant his right foot before attempting a move on Pats' defender Matthew Judon.
Murray appeared to drag his right leg with him as he fell to the grass ... and many assumed his night -- and season -- were over.
Kyler was visibly emotional as he was carted off the field ... putting a towel over his head in frustration as players from both the Patriots and Cardinals gave their regards.
The Cards turned to backup QB Colt McCoy after Murray's injury ... but the team couldn't come away with the win, losing to New England, 27-13.
It's unclear how much time Kyler will ultimately miss ... but a lot, or all, of his 2023 season could be in jeopardy depending on his rehab process.
Get well soon, Kyler.

Rob Gronkowski Surprises Army Vet W/ Pickup Truck ... 'This Is Awesome!!'
Rob Gronkowski is retired from the NFL but he's not done giving back to his fans ... the future Hall of Famer recently surprised a retired U.S. Army veteran, wounded in combat, with an awesome, customized truck!
The G.O.A.T. tight end partnered up with USAA to deliver a 4-door truck to specialist Jonny Flores who served four years in a field artillery unit ... where he worked as a .50 cal gunner, among other jobs.
"Today I'm helping USAA give away a recycled ride to a deserving US military veteran," Gronk said on Tuesday.
"This is gonna be awesome. About to surprise Jonny."
The video of Gronk surprising the Purple Heart recipient in Tampa is amazing ... and from Flores' reaction, he had no idea he was meeting the Super Bowl champ.
"No way!" Flores said, clearly in shock ... "What a surprise!"
Then, when Gronk showed Flores the truck ... he was so stoked!!
It's a feel-good story for a man who has sacrificed mightily for his country. Flores was badly wounded after a vehicle he was in drove over a pressure-plate IED (improvised explosive device) on July 4, 2007 in Baghdad, Iraq. He ultimately had his left leg amputated. He also sustained other injuries in the attack.
Flores, who uses a wheelchair, will now be able to move around much more freely ... because we're told the ride was retrofitted and modified for his mobility needs, including installing a wheelchair lift.
"This means a lot to me," Flores said, "Being able to get my independence and get in and out of this with ease, you know, with no help. That wheelchair thing is something else!"
"This is a game changer. Oh my God. I can already see how many trips and things we're gonna do with the family. I'm so excited. I can't thank you guys enough for this man."
It's all part of the USAA's celebration of their 100th anniversary serving the military ... and the vehicle was the 87th car they gifted in 2022, Gronk's jersey number.
Gronk played 11 seasons in the NFL with the Patriots and Buccaneers. The 5-time Pro Bowler won 4 Super Bowls before retiring in June.
But, it's obvious he's still doing champion-like things!

College football coaching legend Mike Leach has died.
Mississippi State confirmed its head coach passed away on Monday night -- just one day after he was rushed to a hospital in Jackson, Miss. after suffering a "personal health issue at his home."
The school said his death was due to "complications from a heart condition." No further details were released.
He was 61 years old.
"Mike was a giving and attentive husband, father and grandfather," the Leach family said in a statement. "He was able to participate in organ donation at UMMC as a final act of charity."
"We are supported and uplifted by the outpouring of love and prayers from family, friends, Mississippi State University, the hospital staff, and football fans around the world. Thank you for sharing in the joy of our beloved husband and father's life."
Leach initially began his college coaching career in 1987 ... and eventually landed his first D1 head coaching role over a decade later when he became the head man at Texas Tech in 2000.
Leach famously implemented a pass-heavy offense that was later dubbed the "Air Raid," which many college coaches now run at schools to this day.
Following 10 seasons at Texas Tech -- where he compiled an 84-43 record -- Leach signed on to coach Washington State in 2012. He spent eight seasons there ... before moving to Mississippi State in 2020.
Nicknamed The Pirate, Leach gained national fame and fans for his dry sense of humor and quirky responses at media events.
Mississippi State University president Mark E. Keenum mourned the loss on Tuesday morning ... writing in a statement, "Mike's keen intellect and unvarnished candor made him one of the nation's true coaching legends. His passing brings great sadness to our university, to the Southeastern Conference, and to all who loved college football. I will miss Mike's profound curiosity, his honesty, and his wide-open approach to pursuing excellence in all things."
In his 21 years as a head coach, Leach compiled a record of 158-107 ... and won eight bowl games.
RIP.
