Suspended Reds announcer Thom Brennaman says he realizes the "incredible hurt" he caused when he used a homophobic slur on live TV ... and claims he has become a better person in the weeks following the incident.
Remember, the longtime play-by-play guy was calling a game against the KC Royals on August 19 when he was caught on a hot mic referring to an unnamed city as "one of the f** capitals of the world."
Brennaman later apologized mid-game ... and was quickly suspended from his Reds gig and dropped from his "NFL on FOX" role.
The 56-year-old spoke to the NY Post about the backlash he faced following the incident ... saying, "Believe me, I know there are a lot of people who are still very angry and I understand that."
Brennaman has vowed to become an ally for the LGBTQ community ... and has personally met with several groups to get a better understanding of the impact of hateful words.

"The realization of the incredible hurt that I’ve caused using that word has been breathtaking," Brennaman told the Post.
"It’s been absolutely amazing the amount of grace and forgiveness and support."
As for the reason behind using the anti-gay slur ... Brennaman says he has no idea why he said it or in what context.
"I couldn’t even tell you what happened, where it came from."
He added ... "Look, I said it is all that matters. The rest of it is irrelevant. I said it. And I own it. And I’m the one who has to live with it."
Brennaman sends a message to the Reds or any other org. considering giving him another opportunity to call games ... saying, "If I get another chance, someone will be hiring a better person than the person who walked out the door that night on Aug. 19."

Lili Reinhart More LGBTQ+ TV Characters, Please It's Good to be Bisexual!!!
-
Exclusive
- 1.5K shares
Lili Reinhart says there should be more LGBTQ+ representation on TV and in media because it teaches kids to know it's fine to be who you are, and Lili knows from where she speaks.
The "Riverdale" actress was leaving a restaurant Sunday night in L.A. when our camera guy congratulated her on recently coming out as bisexual. We ask if she has any advice for others who might still be in the closet -- and her wisdom is simple but effective.
ICYMI ... Lili announced she was bi back in June before attending a BLM protest in West Hollywood, where LGBTQ+ allies were also marching. Of her decision to finally come out, she said she'd never felt more solidarity or more welcomed -- and simply thought it was time.
Speaking of that, Lili also talks about the fact more gay and bi characters are being introduced to mainstream networks and streaming services, especially on Disney. There's a new show they're rolling out called "Owl House," which features an openly bi character ... and Lili's all for it.
I'm bi! I want to write a bi character, dammit! Luckily my stubbornness paid off and now I am VERY supported by current Disney leadership. (Thank you @NashRiskin and team!) Not to mention the amazingness of this crew.
— Dana Terrace (@DanaTerrace) August 9, 2020 @DanaTerrace
She says it's time for our media to start reflecting the real world -- and that's something we shouldn't hide from our kids as taboo any longer.

A 90-year-old man in Colorado just lifted a huge weight off his shoulders he'd been carrying around for many decades ... he just came out to his gay daughter.
Kenneth Felts says he used his time in quarantine to write a series of memoirs, which opened the flood gates to some old memories locked deep away ... and he finally decided to tell his daughter his truth.
It's super touching ... Kenneth says he finally feels "free" after opening up to his daughter, Rebecca, about his very first love -- a man named Phillip.
And, get this ... Kenneth is coming out 25 years after his daughter told him SHE was gay.

Part of his newfound freedom, Kenneth says, is proudly wearing rainbow shirts and hoodies ... and sprucing up his graying hair with a little dash of blue.
Kenneth says he spent most of his life as a straight man, and never planned to come out ... until lockdown gave him a chance to reflect.
Rebecca says she's just happy her father can finally be himself, something Kenneth admits he had to hide because homosexuality was illegal in the 1950s, when he met Phillip in California before his marriage.
Kenneth says his religion won out over his heart, and he kept his love for Phillip a secret for all these years ... but now he's ready to "embrace" his truth.

Boxer James Hawley Spews Anti-Gay Garbage on TikTok ... Fired By Management Co.
-
Breaking News
- 1.2K shares
An undefeated pro boxer was AXED by his management company Wednesday after the fighter went on a disgusting homophobic rant on TikTok.
Meet James Hawley ... a 21-year-old fighter from the U.K. -- he's 6-0 and was signed with MTK Global, which reps huge boxing stars like Tyson Fury, Carl Frampton and Billy Joe Saunders.
Hawley decided to do a little Q&A on TikTok recently and was asked, "Do you support LGBT?"
His response ... "I one-thousand, one-million percent do not agree with this stuff."
Hawley said he appreciates hot lesbian chicks -- but gay dudes and transgender people just rub him the wrong way.
What a renaissance man, right?
Hawley continued to spew a bunch of super offensive and graphic stuff that we're just not going to include in this article.
He ended with, "I feel sorry for your families."
The rant caught the attention of a "RuPaul's Drag Race U.K." star named Baga Chipz -- who reached out to MTK Global to find out why they would represent someone with such a hateful message?
To MTK Global's credit, they responded to Baga Chipz almost immediately -- saying they cut ties with Hawley after seeing the clip.
"The management team have made the decision to terminate Mr. Hawley's contract with MTK Global with immediate effect and will no longer be representing him in any format."
"MTK Global does not in any way condone, or support the views that were shared in any way, nor will these comments ever be considered as acceptable from any of our fighters hence the decision that was made by management."
After his release, Hawley made a video addressing the move -- and sort of (but not really) apologizing.
Yesterday professional boxer #JamesHawley responded to a question “do you support the LGBT community” instead of either ignoring the question or just saying yes he went on a viral tirade. This is his “apology” video after being let go from his management pic.twitter.com/0wkb9LXskc
— Jolene Dover (@jolenedover) July 22, 2020 @jolenedover
Hawley's defense is that he was being sent graphic photos and videos from gay people and lashed out in a fit of anger.
Hawley says he is the victim of abuse by those people -- and isn't backing down.
Of course, Hawley also offered up the "I have gay friends" excuse.
We reached out to MTK Global to see if they'll listen to Hawley's explanation -- so far, no word back.

Davie, FL Police Chief Resigns After Allegations ... He Blamed Cop's COVID Death on Homosexuality
The longtime police chief of Davie, Florida is outta work ... he quit his post after allegedly blaming a sheriff's deputy's COVID-19 related death on the guy being gay.
Dale Engle, who'd been on the force 22 years, resigned this week in a letter to his staff, saying he was proud of the town he'd served and the work he'd done -- but his departure comes on the heels of him getting placed on administrative leave.
Three months ago a police union accused Chief Engle of saying a Broward County Sheriff's Deputy who'd died from complications due to COVID had no one to blame but himself.
Specifically, the union claimed Engle flew off of the handle when some officers complained about a lack of safety measures to protect them from the coronavirus. During his rant, the union alleges Engle said BSO Deputy Shannon Bennett -- a 12-year vet himself -- contracted the virus and died as a result because he was a “homosexual who attended homosexual 'sexual' events."
Bennett's fiance, Jonathan Frey, has called Engle's alleged comments false, hateful and defamatory.

Velma in 'Scooby-Doo' James Gunn Wanted Her 'Explicitly Gay' ... Claims Studio Blocked It
"Scooby-Doo" sleuth Velma is a lesbian -- at least according to writer/director James Gunn, who says she was definitely gay in his initial 2002 movie script.
Before the filmmaker rose to the ranks of director of the "Guardians of the Galaxy" films, he wrote the screenplays for the live-action "Scooby-Doo" and its 2004 sequel, 'Monsters Unleashed' ... and he says he intended for Velma to be "explicitly gay."
Gunn was replying to a fan on Twitter asking him to return to the franchise and make a live-action Velma gay ... he claims he already tried it.
According to Gunn ... the studio, which was Warner Bros., "just kept watering it down & watering it down, becoming ambiguous (the version shot), then nothing (the released version) & finally having a boyfriend (the sequel)."
Essentially ... Gunn's accusing Warner Bros. of putting the kibosh on a gay character riding shotgun in the Mystery Machine with Scoob & co.
Gunn replied to another fan, suggesting the 2002 film’s home video release hinted at what he was trying to do with Velma’s sexuality in the original script.
The Velma character in the movie was played by Linda Cardellini ... of "Dead to Me" and "Bloodline" fame, most recently.

Lucas Grabeel Gay 'High School Musical' Character I Wouldn't Play Role Now, And Here's Why
-
Exclusive
- 1.3K shares
Lucas Grabeel, who played Ryan in "High School Musical," says he would steer clear from the gay character role nowadays ... so as not to take a job away from a gay actor.
Lucas tells TMZ ... the last thing he would want to do is take an opportunity away from another actor, and as a straight, white man he feels he's already taken plenty of opportunities away from others without even trying. Guy owns his white privilege.
As you know ... the director behind 'HSM' recently revealed Ryan was gay all along, but he says Ryan wasn't openly gay in the movies, because back in 2006 he didn't think Disney was ready for such a character.
Lots have changed since Lucas played Ryan in the Disney Channel Movie 14 years ago ... and he thinks a gay actor would be cast for the role if the movie was being made today, and he hopes the character would not have to hide his identity.
Lucas' thinking is similar to that of Mike Henry, the white actor who voiced Cleveland on "Family Guy" for 20 years. Mike recently stepped down from the role, saying the black character should be voiced by a black actor.
As for gay characters like Ryan, Lucas says it's finally time for Disney and others in the industry to start educating children about gay people at the youngest age possible.

Massachusetts City First to Recognize Polyamorous Relationships
A city near Boston is the first in the country to recognize polyamorous relationships ... i.e., more than 2 people.
Somerville, Massachusetts passed an ordinance changing the definition of relationships that are recognized by the government. Domestic partnerships have been defined as an "entity formed by 2 persons," but the new definition reads a relationship "formed by people."
The ordinance also replaces pronouns -- no longer "he" or "she" ... it's now "they."
Short story ... the ordinance allows for more than 2 people in a domestic partnership.
The new ordinance was actually inspired by the coronavirus pandemic. There were residents of Somerville who were not married, and as a result, they could not visit their partners in the hospital because of restrictions on visitors.
The mayor signed the ordinance a few days ago ... it should be just a matter of days until polyamorous partners can file for domestic partnership.
BTW ... Massachusetts was the first state to recognize same-sex marriage back in 2004.

Paralympian Angela Madsen Dies During Solo Rowing Trip ... Across Pacific Ocean
Devastating news .. 3-time Paralympian rower Angela Madsen was found dead on Monday after attempting to become the first paraplegic athlete to row across the Pacific Ocean. She was 60.
Madsen had dreams of being the first paraplegic, openly gay athlete and oldest woman to cross the Pacific, according to Long Beach Press-Telegram ... so in April, she left Marina del Rey in Los Angeles on a 20-foot rowboat heading towards Honolulu.
She reportedly journeyed alone -- brining only food, desalinator for water and supplies with her.
Madsen's wife Deb said on Facebook she became worried when Madsen stopped responding to her text messages on Sunday.
"When I checked the main message inbox, she had not returned any messages. When I looked at the tracking, it did not appear that she was rowing the boat, but rather that is was drifting."
Madsen's body was discovered the next day by the U.S. Coast Guard. An official cause of death has not been determined.
Madsen, who is also a U.S. Marine vet, became paralyzed in 1993 when things went wrong after a surgery on her injured spine -- which she had suffered during a basketball game at Marine Corps Air Station El Toro.
She later became homeless -- which she blamed on the massive medical bills that followed. But, she found wheelchair sports -- and it changed her life.
Madsen earned a spot on the U.S. Paralympic team three times, winning the bronze medal in shot put in 2012.
RIP.
