The White House has been put on lockdown and a police car has been set on fire as protests numbers grow in cities across the United States.
Thousands of people have hit streets in Washington D.C., Atlanta, San Jose, Minneapolis and other cities Friday to protest the killing of George Floyd. Many expressed anger that the other 3 officers involved in the incident hadn't yet been arrested or charged for his death.
In Atlanta, a police car was set on fire and major roadways were blocked. In San Jose, riot police started walking crowds back and Secret Service put the White House on lockdown as protests neared the residence.
Secret Service are swooping forward to reset fallen barricades before protesters just throw them over again, it’s becoming a cycle where neither side is moving very far. At least two people are being cuffed behind a patrol car. pic.twitter.com/1FX3BJ9EUr
In a video from just outside the White House, shows protesters knocking barriers over and law enforcement officials setting them back up ... only to be knocked over again.
It was announced Friday that officer Derek Chauvin -- who placed his knee on Floyd's neck for nearly 9 minutes while he died -- has been charged with 3rd-degree murder and 2nd-degree manslaughter. The criminal complaint said he created, "an unreasonable risk and taking a chance of causing death or great bodily harm to George Floyd."
Thursday night in Minneapolis was a dangerous scene, with riots and fires breaking out. The 3rd Police Precinct was burned to the ground ... a building just 3 miles from where Floyd was killed.
Julia Roberts is making a political statement with her face mask -- one that's sure to irk PresidentTrump ... on so many levels.
The actress stepped out Thursday wearing a face covering with former President Barack Obama's face on it. Julia was strolling around the Malibu Country Mart as she did her part to mitigate the spreading of the coronavirus.
Let's face it, she was also further politicizing face coverings -- something the current POTUS started by refusing to wear one ... even though his own administration's guidelines say everyone should in public. Arguably, Trump's adamant stanceis why we've seen clashes around the country over face masks.
Of course, 45 trashes 44 every chance he gets ... so the Oscar winner's pandemic fashion statement would no doubt get a thumbs down from the White House.
We're confident in saying ... Julia wouldn't give a crap.
Rep.Maxine Waters says George Floyd's killing has her thinking some police officers wake up thinking, "I'm gonna get me one today," and she suspects George was this guy's one.
The Congresswoman from California joined us on "TMZ Live" and was outraged by Floyd's death at the hands of police, telling us it's got her reflecting on other killings of young black men by cops and white supremacists.
Waters says the Minneapolis cop who kept his knee jammed deep into Floyd's neck for several minutes actually "enjoyed doing it." She took it a step further with a theory about what goes through the minds of rogue police officers.
The way Rep. Waters sees it ... the cop was out for blood, and that's why he didn't care that citizens were not only witnessing his actions, but recording video of him slowly killing Floyd.
As for the other officers involved -- she's not letting them off the hook, criminally, either.
The Congresswoman says the police and white supremacists who think they can get away with killing a black person feel empowered because of "dog-whistling" from President Trump.
And, in a sobering commentary, she explains how the justice system has repeatedly failed millions of citizens ... which makes it increasingly important to have irrefutable video when crimes like this occur.
Keisha Lance Bottoms believes the majority of Americans know the man in charge is "not very smart" ... and she's urging everyone to use common sense and good judgment to get through this pandemic safely instead of following his political lead ... especially over masks.
The Mayor of Atlanta joined "TMZ Live" to talk about the politicization of COVID -- which is just crazy -- and the alarming images in her fair city, showing hundreds of people partying in close quarters without masks.
Bottoms says the silent majority has been responsible, and it would be a tragedy for a relatively small group to trigger a resurgence of the virus.
The problem, of course ... some people -- probably many -- are taking their cues from President Trump, who is clearly using masks as a moniker for his re-election campaign ... defying doctors and scientists and instead relying on untrained, gut instinct on what drugs to take and how to stay safe. Mayor Bottoms couldn't make sense of it ... because it doesn't make sense.
And, Mayor Bottoms told us how she spent a sleepless night after talking to her mother about the horrific killing of George Floyd. Watch the video and hear what her mom told her about civil rights and where we're at. It's just heartbreaking.
President Trump is speaking out about the killing of George Floyd, saying federal law enforcement is on the case ... and promising there will be justice.
POTUS tweeted Wednesday about George's death, saying ... "At my request, the FBI and the Department of Justice are already well into an investigation as to the very sad and tragic death in Minnesota of George Floyd."
He went on to say, "I have asked for this investigation to be expedited and greatly appreciate all of the work done by local law enforcement. My heart goes out to George’s family and friends. Justice will be served!"
It's interesting ... we already knew the FBI was involved, but the fact the DOJ is jumping in right away as well is pretty telling. Seems the President is aware of how angry and fed up millions of Americans are after seeing the video of George's killing.
It's a more emphatic reaction than he had several days after the video surfacedof Ahmaud Arbery getting shot to death -- saying it was a horrible thing, and he was awaiting the results of several investigations.
In any case, it's good to see the case has caught the attention of the most powerful person in the country ... who can actually do something about this at the highest level.
Some more consistency would be nice, but we'll take it.
President Trump's Press Secretary said out loud today ... she senses White House correspondents don't much believe in God, for daring to ask her why the President is defying some governors who do not want churches open this weekend because of the pandemic.
Friday's White House briefing was a s*** show. Trump wants all churches open this weekend, despite the orders from some governors who want them shut because the virus is still out of control in their states.
A reporter dared to ask Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany if Trump was asking people to defy their governors. She dog-whistled for sure -- urging people to follow Trump's direction and go to church -- but would never squarely say her boss wanted people to defy the governors. Fact is, that's exactly what she's saying.
And, then it got real ... you gotta watch the video. When pressed, she mused that it was interesting these reporters wanted houses of worship locked up like a drum, suggesting they were all a bunch of heretics. At least one church-going reporter became indignant.
In case you forgot ... there was a church service not too long ago, where 2 people had the virus, and it spread to 30 people in the congregation.
BTW ... Trump is flip-flopping more than a 50-pound tuna that was just reeled in. A few weeks ago he said everything was up to the governors. Now he's saying defy the governors.
On the subject of houses of worship ... God help us.
Vice President Mike Pence is sticking to the Trump administration playbook ... getting out in public without a face mask, despite close contact with Florida's Governor and citizens.
The Veep was down in Orlando Wednesday with Gov. Ron DeSantis and some other bigwigs, where they were chowing down at a restaurant called Beth's Burger Bar -- all to talk shop about safely reopening Florida's economy again.
Ironically ... the two politicos -- and just about everyone else inside -- didn't appear to observe much, if any, social distancing during lunch. In fact, they were all pretty darn close to one another ... and, of course, both men went mask-less.
It's not exactly a surprise Pence is flouting his own task force's recommendations here -- he's very rarely worn a face-covering ... despite the fact his own press secretary tested positive for the coronavirus.
Of course, the Prez and the VP are telegraphing the no-mask message to the masses, which arguably is fueling a growing rift in the country about this issue. It's even led to violence at times.
The eagle has landed in D.C. for 'Tiger King' star Joe Exotic, whose legal team is hoping they can get the President's ear ... and they even got their elevator pitch down to a tee.
Eric Love -- who's heading up the team of top-notch attorneys out of Fort Worth, TX -- came on ''TMZ Live'' Wednesday with a major update on their cross-country road trip down to the nation's capital, in hopes of receiving presidential pardon for Joe from Donald Trump.
He says they've finally arrived, and are out cruising the town parading their huge bus around ... ya know, the one with the piercing "PARDON JOE EXOTIC" wrap on both sides.
Anyway, that's not even the biggest news from their touching down -- Eric claims DT's aware of their presence. Citing his own sources, Eric says Trump and some of his fam know the dealio -- Secret Service does too, apparently -- but there's still no guarantee of getting a meeting with the guy at this point. Not to worry, though ... they're staying hopeful.
We also asked Eric to dish out a mock 30-second spiel on why Joe should get sprung. Watch ... sounds like Eric's gonna appeal to Trump's sense of being wronged and targeted.
Knowing 45 the way we think we do by now -- something tells us it could work, if he'll listen.
Megan Rapinoe says Donald Trump is a "white nationalist" who's screwed over his own supporters ... and admits she's considered running for office herself one day to help make things right.
"We have a white nationalist -- I think -- in the White House," Rapinoe told VICE TV's Anand Giridharadas.
"And, the spewing of hate and the other'ing of the rest of the country has only led to more rife between people and more despair and more anxiety and more fear going forward."
Rapinoe -- a very outspoken critic of POTUS since he took office in 2017 -- also says on VICE's "Seat At The Table" (airs Wednesday) that Trump is also hurting his own supporters.
"It's not like he's giving them a bunch of jobs. It's not like he's made life really better for them. He's just given them this false reason why maybe they're not happy with their lives. There's been no sort of path forward."
Rapinoe's public criticisms of Trump have caught his attention in the past -- most famously when she declared she was "not going to the f**king White House" if Team USA won the 2019 World Cup.
There are conflicting reports about whether Trump ever seriously invited the team -- but regardless, they didn't go.
But, get this ... Rapinoe was asked straight-up if she's ever considered getting into politics when her soccer career wraps up -- and it's clearly something she's thought about.
"I'm not totally shutting the door but it seems wild," Rapinoe says.
As for her dream political job, Megan admits, "President, of course."
"If I'm going to do it, I want the biggest, baddest post."
Rapinoe says she knows there are smarter people out there -- but says she's really good at delegating and would make sure her cabinet is loaded with top talent.
6:11 PM PT -- President Obama just addressed 2020's graduating class at large, and he seemed more willing to take direct shots at President Trump than he did with his HBCU speech ... without name-dropping, of course.
UPDATE
Barack's speech was mainly focused on the pandemic and how this group of students would have to rise to the challenge ahead of them and deal with the problem at hand -- unlike some adults who are running the show now, and not asking the right questions ... per BO. It seems clear -- the guy's talking about DT and his administration/task force.
UPDATE
There was one other pretty damning slam against 45, when Barack recommended the grads do what they think is right, and not do what they think is easy or convenient. He said that's how a child thinks -- and in some cases, how certain people in power think too.
UPDATE
One last thing that caught our eye ... Barack made a pretty big pop culture reference, saying the class of 2020 probably never thought they'd be spending their senior year summer hanging out at home with their parents watching 'Tiger King' instead of being out.
President Obama just gave a commencement speech for HBCU grads who couldn't walk in person this year -- and the topics he tackled were timely ... with a message full of hope.
44 was the headlining commencement speaker during Chase's 'Show Me Your Walk' virtual graduation for over 20k HBCU students nationwide. It was the first part of two speeches Obama is giving Saturday -- later, he'll address 2020 grads at large on prime time TV.
For the HBCU crowd, BO's remarks were much more pointed and somewhat sobering ... noting, as African-Americans and POC, these students specifically had many challenges ahead of them, but Barack told them clearly ... he knows they're up to the challenge.
He also touched on the death of Ahmaud Arbery, saying we're still living in a time when people feel they can take the law into their hands and kill black people in broad daylight. Barack went on to take a veiled shot at President Trump and his handling of the coronavirus pandemic, saying some of our leaders aren't even pretending to be in charge.
BTW, Saturday's 'Show Me Your Walk' stream was a star-studded event beyond just Barry's appearance -- Kevin Hart hosted, and a TON of other people made cameos ... including Serena Williams, Chris Paul, Vivica A. Fox, Common, Steve Harvey, Wyclef Jean, Kamala Harris, Vince Carter, Omari Hardwick and several more who gave words of encouragement.
This week's celeb-packed grad addresses follow Oprah's own -- where she too tried lifting the spirits of students who couldn't attend their own ceremonies. Stay tuned for Obama's nationally televised address ... we're sure it'll be just as powerful as this one.
President Trumpand Dr. Anthony Fauci were images of stark contrast Friday, as the President went maskless while the nation's leading infectious disease doctor was covered up.
Trump was front and center at his daily coronavirus news briefing without a face covering -- something he clearly refuses to do, despite the fact several members of The White House staff have tested positive. Fauci and Dr. Birx weren't going to be intimidated by the Prez, and they were fully masked during the news conference.
It's telling, because Trump has now gone after Fauci, saying he's playing both ends against the middle -- Trump feels he's being overly cautious. For his part, Dr. Fauci is delivering data without judgment ... only to say if we act irresponsibly, we're going to have big problems.
Meanwhile, outside the W.H. ... Kellyanne Conway was talking PPE's, and offered up what she would wear around her boss and the Veep, to blunt the possibility of a President Pelosi.
Joe Exotic's massive new legal team is chomping at the bit to ask Donald Trump for a presidential pardon for the 'Tiger King' ... and they're ready to flood the White House!!!
Eric Love, the super-colorful figure leading Joe's legal team, just checked in from the HQ in Ft. Worth, Texas ... telling us they're hitting the road bright and early Monday en route to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
As you can see ... the big bus wrapped in a plea to get Joe sprung from prison looks all gassed up and ready to go to D.C. ... and Eric says they're gonna enjoy the weekend then get down to brass tacks.
As we first reported ... Joe's legal team produced a Texas-style video asking POTUS for a pardon, claiming the 'Tiger King' is not only NOT GUILTY of trying to get Carole Baskin whacked ... he was also FRAMED.
Joe's army of lawyers will attack on all fronts ... they're appealing Joe's conviction, asking Trump for a pardon and even pursuing a malicious prosecution lawsuit against a bunch of people involved in Joe's criminal trial.
As you know ... there's also evidence the alleged hitman had an ax to grind with Joe, because he told us his testimony against Exotic was "payback" and he wished he could've done even more to hurt Joe.
Mike Pence can't mask the message he's sending by repeatedly defying mask guidelines -- facial coverings are for the weak ... at least that seems to be what he's telegraphing.
The Vice President was seen without a mask inside the White House Monday, despite new rules put in place on the heels of 2 aides testing positive for COVID-19 last week -- a valet for President Trump and Pence's own press secretary, Katie Miller.
This is absolutely crazy, especially when you consider the VP was in close contact with Miller recently, and Dr. Tony Fauci -- who had less direct contact with her -- is in a modified self-quarantine as a safety precaution.
Yet, it seems Pence is more about following Trump's lead and flouting CDC guidelines regularly in a show of defiance, or perhaps in an attempt to show strength. Trump, of course, didn't wear a mask Monday at the Rose Garden either.
Earlier Monday, a WH memo to staff pointed out that the CDC encourages the use of facial coverings when social distancing is not an option ... such as at The White House.
Therefore, it stated ... "As an additional layer of protection, we are requiring everyone who enters the West Wing to wear a mask or facial covering."
"Everyone" is apparently open for interpretation in the Trump administration. Pence has already demonstrated this concept at the Mayo Clinic, though ... so we should have known.
4:04 PM PT -- Mike Pence's office has released a statement, essentially denying Bloomberg's report that he's self-isolating -- but their wording is interesting.
UPDATE
A spokesperson for the VP says, "Vice President Pence will continue to follow the advice of the White House Medical Unit and is not in quarantine. Additionally, Vice President Pence has tested negative every single day and plans to be at the White House tomorrow."
UPDATE
It's interesting, 'cause Bloomberg didn't say Pence was in quarantine ... they made sure to use the phrase self-isolation. In any case, it was a brief solo stint if he was, in fact, doing that ... as he's apparently expected to be back at the podium on Monday. Welcome back!
Vice President Mike Pence is going away for a little while -- the Veep is reportedly self-isolating after someone in his own office tested positive for coronavirus.
Pence is self-isolating away from the White House, which would explain his absence from a meeting with President Trump and other top military officials Saturday, according to Bloomberg. He's staying home out of an abundance of caution says Bloomberg, noting he hasn't tested positive himself. Unclear how long MP will be in isolation, or if it'll be a full quarantine.
Of course, this comes after his press secretary, Katie Miller, recently tested positive. She's usually in close contact with Pence, as well as others on the coronavirus task force. Miller is also married to Stephen Miller, who's a key member of Trump's administration at the WH.
As for DT, no word yet if he'll shutter himself in like his #2. One of Trump's personal valet of his also tested positive for coronavirus, as have several Secret Service agents.
In the meantime, both the Prez and Vice Prez will continue getting tested daily. Pence is the latest at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. to head inside -- Dr. Fauci is currently in a modified quarantine himself ... and other CDC officials are on lockdown too.
Dr. Fauci is headed for self-isolation -- a tweaked version, that is -- after a White House staffer tested positive for coronavirus ... but he's only doing so as a precaution.
The director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases will go into what he describes as a "modified' quarantine, which means he'll be working remotely from home for 14 days with a mask on -- but might come and go to his office as needed, albeit solo.
Fauci says he's made "low-risk" contact with the staffer, and therefore, won't go into full quarantine ... unlike two other members of Trump's coronavirus task force, who've already gone into full lockdown themselves. Fauci says he's currently negative for COVID-19.
Earlier last week, it was revealed that VP Mike Pence's press secretary, Katie Miller, had coronavirus -- but it's not clear if she's the one everyone's going into quarantine over. Of course, Trump's own valet driver has also tested positive, and reports of about a dozen Secret Service agents dedicated to protecting Trump and others have also contracted it.
In other words ... the White House is starting to feel like a biohazard zone to some -- including old Tony here -- and they wanna steer clear for a while. Probably a good idea.
The gloves are officially off, because Barack Obama has made his feelings known about the way his successor has handled the coronavirus pandemic, and the former Prez did NOT mince words.
Obama was speaking with members of the Obama Alumni Ass'n, and during the 30-minute call, he was explaining to the group why there needed to be strong leadership to manage the crisis. He was trying to get the former staffers to get active in Joe Biden's bid to replace President Trump.
Obama then launched into his assessment of the way Trump has handled things, saying, "What we're fighting against is these long-term trends in which being selfish, being tribal, being divided, and seeing others as an enemy -- that has become a stronger impulse in American life."
And, then you hear the former Prez in the audio obtained by Yahoo! News ... calling Trump's response to COVID-19 "an absolute chaotic disaster." He said, "It would have been bad even with the best of governments. It has been an absolute chaotic disaster when that mindset -- of 'what's in it for me' and 'to heck with everybody else' -- when that mindset is operationalized in our government."
Obama is clearly referring to Trump hijacking the daily briefings and spending endless amounts of time talking about what a great job he's done and lying about the availability of tests. And, then there's the whole thing about ingesting disinfectant ...
