Prosecutors are officially going after Columbus Short following his arrest for domestic violence ... TMZ has learned.
You'll recall, the ex "Scandal" star was arrested earlier this month after cops were called to his home over an argument he had with his wife -- one that allegedly got physical.
His case was initially presented for potential felony charges to the L.A. County D.A., but it was subsequently kicked down to the City Attorney, who charged him with 2 misdemeanor counts -- one for domestic violence and one for child endangerment.
We're told Columbus got hit with child endangerment because the incident allegedly took place in front of a child.
Cops say Short didn't have any marks or bruises, although he claimed his wife had punched him in the face. Police did notice his wife had a minor injury, which we're told was a scratch on her finger -- and she told cops she got it when Columbus tried to snatch her phone.
Short was previously arrested for domestic violence in 2018, and ended up spending 34 days behind bars.
He also got into trouble over a bar fight back in 2014 that left someone with a broken nose.
A source close to Short tells us ... he's battled addiction issues in the past, and is taking each day at a time. We're told his family is his priority as he focuses on getting back on track with his sobriety.

A rep from the L.A. DA's office tells TMZ Sports they've elected not to charge the 36-year-old running back.
But, Peterson isn't totally in the clear just yet. The case will now be sent to the Los Angeles City Attorney ... who could opt to bring misdemeanor domestic violence charges against AD.
As for the alleged incident ... sources tell us Peterson attempted to remove his wife's wedding ring, causing minor marks to her hand.
Adrian Peterson's wife is defending the NFL star in the wake of his domestic violence arrest ... saying "at no point" did he hit her.
We broke the story, Peterson was thrown in jail on Sunday after he allegedly got physical with his wife, Ashley, during an argument on a plane at LAX.
Our sources say Peterson was taken into custody after Ashley was seen to have sustained a small mark on her following the alleged altercation.
Ashley, though, posted on her Instagram on Tuesday that Peterson never got physical with her ... saying, "At no point did Adrian hit or strike me."
"Adrian and I had a verbal argument," she added. "Unfortunately, it was on an airplane."
She continued, "This is a private matter between my husband and myself. We ask that everyone respect our privacy so we can focus on what matters most: our children."
For his part, Peterson -- who was booked on a charge of felony domestic violence -- has also denied hitting Ashley ... telling FOX 26 Sports this week that the mark on Ashley was the result of him taking a ring off her finger during their argument.
"Literally that's why I went to jail," Peterson said. "Because the ring left a scratch on her finger."
Peterson added, "We just had a disagreement."

Simon Leviev is looking to turn his "Tinder Swinder" fame into a legit career, because he wants to break into Hollywood.
Sources close to Simon tell TMZ ... he's already signed with a talent manager, and wants to write a book, star on a dating show and host a dating podcast. Yeah, no shocker ... the guy's got big plans.
Simon's new Hollywood manager is Gina Rodriguez with Gitoni Inc, and we're told they've already discussed a bunch of plans to parlay his newfound Netflix fame into profit and an entertainment career.
We're told Simon's idea for a potential dating show includes women competing for his love ... and he's interested in sharing dating dos and don'ts on a potential podcast.
As you know ... Simon's the subject of the new Netflix documentary in which women -- and law enforcement -- claim he flaunted a lavish lifestyle to women on Tinder, and once he got them hooked, he would convince them to "loan" him money.
When they did, he'd ghost them and allegedly make off with their dough.
Almost like a Ponzi scheme, the Netflix doc claims Simon would use one woman's funds to wine and dine the next, and so on. All told, Simon allegedly swindled over $10 million from his alleged victims before his 2019 arrest.
So, why in the world would anyone trust him -- in or out of Hollywood???
Our sources say Simon is claiming the Netflix show got him all wrong, and he's looking to clear his name. It'll be an uphill battle, for sure -- but as you know if you've seen 'Swindler' -- that's never stopped him before.
